That's actually a good question, they were faking gameshows back in the 50s so its not like the suits didn't realize they could just wholesale make stuff up.

I have an uncle who has worked in live music production for decades. In 1982, before he started doing sound for a job, he went to a memorable concert. He went to see Motorhead at Billy Barty's Roller Fantasy, a combination roller skating rink and music venue. It was more roller rink than venue, and the acoustics in it were terrible. EVERYTHING echoed. He said it sounded like a 747 taking off inside a warehouse for 2 hours. My ears are ringing just thinking about it.
