I suspect this is the best the defense can do with the strategy they selected. Unlike Trump, Daniels absolutely can invoke a "my lawyer said to do this" because she's not on trial and with the line of questioning Necheles went with.

So the lawyer is proving that... Stormy Daniels signed an NDA and didn't disclose what happened after agreeing to it?

What is the point of fixating on whether Daniels did or didn't want money? This trial is about trump covering up the payment. I'm poo poo at laywer stuff.

Unless the jurors are biased against sex-work I can't see how trumbo's law-speakers are doing more than making her sound smart and sympathetic on the stand... I don't think they've poked a single hole in her credibility or motivations?

I guess they think they can flip it on Stormy and charge her with extortion?

Trumps legal team are also unarmed in a battle of wits, so…

They're trying to say that Daniels was out for the money, which would make it more of an extortion scheme and throwing up a ton of smoke with respect to the basic fact that it was still money paid to benefit a federal election campaign. If you buy the underlying logic of the prosecution's theory of the case, it's pretty simple really. If you're skeptical, then it can veer into the weeds and then the jury will lose the thread which results (possibly!) in an acquittal.

It's (IMO) not a bad tack but Daniels is not cooperating with the defense's plan here.

I think they're trying for a "you signed a contract and then broke it" thing to turn the jury against her testimony, except it's not relevant to this case. It's trying to be a gotcha, but we've been through this years ago when the Stormy Daniels saga began and when the prosecution gets up they're just going to deflate this.

If Trump can't attack certain people himself, maybe get other assholes to do it for him?

I think the closing arguments and jury instructions would prevent that from being a successful tactic. They're going to lay out the elements of the crime and then go, "Do you agree that these things happened?"

I agree that they're trying to make Daniels look bad without opening the door the worse testimony against Trump, it's just that I think it's not a very good plan.

You just have to plant the seeds of doubt. "I got extorted to pay a money-grubbing porn star!" and then let a bunch of unspoken biases do their thing. I feel like stronger cases got hijacked by that sort of attack. In the event, it'll be part of a larger plan where you also attack Cohen and then paint a picture of an overzealous prosecutor going after an unpopular figure for political points using an unsound legal theory with shady figures who have obvious self-serving interests too. Whether that'll work is one thing, and whether there is a better strategy on offer is also another.

His defense is basically that he was being extorted by people who threatened to release the story if Trump didn't pay them and he had no choice but to cover it up.

More than likely, and Fox needs its red meat to throw at the feral hogs.

Special Boy’s handlers probably invited his friends over for a play date at the court to cheer him up, too because mean ‘ol Stormy Daniels was going to be mean to him.

I’m not at all sure that this will work, when prosecution can point to any number of emails the Trump team sends out calling anyone and everyone “enemies.” Id assume that could be introduced now, if desired. Also IANAL
