So, 4 days left, are we doing fantasy sumo for May? If Kenning doesn't have time to run it, I'll miss it dearly but that's totally understandable. But whether we have an official goon basho or not, I kind of want to just post my picks anyway so I commit and stop tweaking my kachi clash roster every few days...

I think the only one with the capacity to do the tracking (apart form Kenning) would be Banana Canada but I'm not sure if they're up for the rest of the admin of running the whole fantasy basho.

I hadn't even realised the next one was just around the corner. Time flies eh.

This looks.... pretty legit?? I mashed the $7/mo ($CAD) subscription to kill the ads and I'm actually pretty excited for this basho. My enjoyment will depend on how quickly the videos are available, but I'm optimistic.

The feeds appear to be no-commentary which was always my biggest gripe about the NHK's daily recaps vs Natto. I just don't want a commentator.

Make sure to go to settings and enable the slider to hide match results until after you've watched the video if you're like me and want to watch to see the outcome, not just see how it happened.

At $7/mo I'll probably just keep this going to support them, rather than cancel between basho. If it pans out, it's a way better option than that JMe IPTV option from a page or two back. I'd gladly pay $14/basho to watch legally.

For more than half a decade I've been going on about how I'd gladly pay for a legit legal way to watch Sumo. I'm putting my money where my mouth is. The JMe thing didn't pan out but I'm optimistic about this one.

The app is pretty slick and the videos go up within minutes after the matches. It’s from a feed with limited camera angles but it’s great to be able to pull up a cool bout to show friends or whatever.

My only complaint is I’m running a pihole and sometimes the ads just won’t load at all so I can’t watch the videos.

Yeah, the app looks really good, from what I've seen. It sounds like I might have to disable my ad-blocking VPN to watch the videos, but that's okay.

Meanwhile, Jme is promising a dedicated sumo channel that will play reruns of the day's makuuchi highlights (trimmed down to the action only, NHK-style) and full makuuchi (like Midnight Sumo) all day long. It's not on-demand, but it might work. The app still doesn't have a native cast function, which is bizarre as hell to me in TYOOL 2024. I'm so spoiled by years of being able to record basho on my DVR and watch them whenever--sometimes much later, because we were out of town that week (which happened a lot, now that I think about it).

Re: Fantasy Sumo

I've sent a PM to Kenning and I don't believe Banana Canada has PMs but I ran the exhibition basho in the past. I'd like to touch base with Banana Canada, at the very least, if I can page them to this thread and have them send me an email at sarobviously@gmail.com if they can.

Obviously, I'm not looking to step on any toes. I'm making my intention known that I am willing to run another exhibition fantasy but will ask to wait to put out some kind of actual decision for the moment.

If JMe comes up with some good sumo content I think that's great, but not being able to VOD it is a dealbreaker for me. If I have to schedule watching it, I'm realistically not going to.

So while I think I've built a pretty robust tracker, that is only part of the machine that Kenning ran. The goonzuke/rankings, trades and drafting all a black box to me so if you have the spreadsheet and familiarity and can run the draft and trades (and if Kenning doesn't mind), I can try to keep the score tracking up to date and posted daily. And if we are absent an updated goonzuke, maybe it should just be run as a single division.

He's m6 now, so in theory 15 losses drops him to juryo, but I wonder if the old men will grant him some grace based on the performance he put on last time

Edit: Also this app seems pretty legit. I'll give it a try through the basho. Would be nice if it supported Chromecast, but I think this is the sort of 'watch sumo on the train' type of thing

Short notice, I know, but after deliberations I will be running a May fantasy hana-zumo!

What this means: For a second time we will have an exhibition Goon Sumo Tournament. Results from this fantasy tournament will not count towards your goonzuke standing and everyone will be grouped into one division. All other rules regarding drafting, trading, and scoring will be as usual.

Please submit your draft picks as normal, preferably by the start of the first matches on Sunday; I will be putting out the draft and first day's results by Sunday evening.

Thank you all for making this thread what it is and I look forward to an exciting tournament these next two weeks. And as always: Ganbare!
