What’s the deal in TNG with transporting. Sometimes they have to use the transporter room, while other times they can just be like “transport them straight to the bridge.” What’s the transporter room for then?

From what I remember they use the transporter room for ship to ship transport and transporting people to the surface. And in the former case the people they're transporting aren't wearing combadges.

Of course, there's always the "what the plot demands" situation that sometimes crops up.

I think they gotta do like math and poo poo and worry about stuff being in the way of the transport to places other than the transporter room. The transporter room is the preset and the pads are always clear so it’s just easier.

What you’re talking about is “site-to-site” transport and it takes more energy and is just a bit riskier of a maneuver overall.

Did I make this up? Yes.

the transporter room can beam to and from anywhere. it's not really "transporting" people physically, it's a specialized piece of equipment that's capable of disassembling and then reassembling them exactly from scratch both locally and remotely

when they're transported e.g. "straight to the bridge" what's really happening is they're being transported to the transporter room where instead of materializing there, the information of their disassembled self is then used immediately from there to reassemble them in the secondary location with no pause. they don't do that every time for the same reason that you don't drive to a restaurant every time you want to eat- it's easier, less resource-intensive, and, though the risk of something going wrong is low, why double it? the transporter room is also like a locker room or triage, it's the place in the ship best equipped for all the little things people have to do when getting in and out of the ship

so the characters can have conversations in the turbolift

Man I watched field of dreams, what a weird rear end movie that is. Some real 90s white people american kind of thing.

Really didn't expect it to setup the field of dreams premise in the first like 20 minutes, and then pivots hard for an hour to the weird road trip between Costner and jones.

Will tell you what, Kevin Costner creeps me out. Feels like there's nothing behind his eyes, and I don't just mean he's a bad actor, I see no emotions or expression in his eyes. I'm convinced he's a sociopath or psychopath or something and just became a mediocre actor.

Same (but my dad wasn't absent and we have a normal relationship).

I also can't bring myself to hate it, but there's something so annoying about it. Every beat they do is so transparent you see it coming. Oh a hitchhiker on the highway? Wow I bet he's going to be some baseball player related to the last scene involving a guy out of time. Oh a family crisis bringing Richard Dreyfuss (look I know he's not Richard Dreyfuss but every time I see him I think it's him) closer to what matters (it's a movie about family) and now he can see a ghost. Oh a lone baseball player at the end, I wonder who could that be, obviously it's going to be absent daddy.

But it still works, it's so stupid and on the nose but it works dammit.

It is proven that there is a continuation of consciousness by the episode where Barclay wakes up mid-transport.

This dumb conversation keeps happening even though it’s quite clearly settled in the text of the show.

continuation of consciousness doesn't actually prove anything, it's just as possible for replication to feel like a seamless experience to the one who comes out on the other end

but also god that was a stupid plot point, makes no loving sense that anything about you or your body would work while being transmitted as a beam of energy

For real though, if transporters did exist it would probably result in a similar issue as fears of flying for a lot of people, perhaps moreso if that question is in the back of your mind.
