It's not from a rulebook. Originally it showed up as a reader submission in the Chapter Approved section of White Dwarf during 3rd edition. Then later on it was reprinted in one of the Chapter Approved books that collected a bunch of alternate army rules, FAQs and other write ups. Can't remember which one specifically of the three ones that came out during the early 00's.

The best faction in 40k already have the rok bombardment angle covered. No need to retrofit an asteroid with engines, they're only ones with tractor beams apparently so they can just lob continent sized pieces of space rock at a planet. But, being the strategic and tactical geniuses they are, rather than use this method to simply destroy the planet's surface they build fortifications into the asteroids themselves to use it as a fortress from which to launch an invasion. A devious maunver deployed by one of oldest, most storied races of the galaxy.

As the name implies, this mission goes much smoother than last time. It is set up the same in a lot of regards too, right down to the interceptor without the ability to teleport. Perhaps the only differences are the type of bloomspawn plant that are the mission objectives and being more prepared for each enemy patrol I encounter. The first new thing being the different bloomspawn plant. I find this version much easier to deal with since it doesn't have nearly the range as the spitting plant artillery. They can be a little annoying in their own right though, especially if enemy ranged units have places to take cover and return fire at you while near the tree. The plague of flies makes ranged attacks against the tree less effective and it's attack blast will heal any nurgle units nearby. All that make it a pretty nice defensive structure for nurgle if they can force you to fight on it's terms. However if the trees guardians are melee or otherwise don't stick close to the tree then the fight can be much easier by picking off the guardians and then standing out of range of the trees blast attack and either killing it at a safe distance, or chipping away it it's health until you can safely close to melee and kill it before deal with the blast attack. As I said there wasn't really anything else that was different from last mission except the flow of battle. No getting bogged down and stuck into a protracted fight where I had to think up crazy turn orders to get out of a jam. This mission and the last are kind of polar opposites of how the same mission can go. One was just a giant cluster of problems and this one went smooth and to plan, and in about half the time spent in mission.

Yeah, that mission was much easier. Another factor that made that much more smooth is that the map this time is one of the easiest map layouts. Basically, all those walls/doors, and sight line interruptions. It makes accidental pod reveals much less likely, and also allows the player to cram the Marines much closer to the pods before activating them. Compare that to the previous map (one of the harder layouts, actually), where the sight lines were largely uninterrupted to most of the spots the pods like to stand. This map allows much more control over when/where to fight, which is always a benefit useful to have. On the subject of pods, for these typical maps where you're exploring and revealing pods, there's actually a trick you can do to 'initiate' and get one unit much closer than normal. Basically, it's Justicar/Dreadnought (if you're playing that) specific, and it's the charge ability. Get to the edge of the activation (whether in normal fog or on the other side of a door (for the Justicar), or wall (Dreadnought only). Activate the Charge ability and point it towards the pod, and while you activate the pod, the ability still completes the full movement and it shunts the charger much closer in the fray, allowing use of melee based tricks. And the unit will still have full AP/CDs. So in the Justicar's case, it allows him to setup a big juicy Rend the Unclean, much more easily than normal. Or simply charge again if any of the enemies decided to hang near ledges for knockback kills. Holy hell, that Purgator basically rolled as badly as he could've in his skill choices. I'm surprised that anyone could find a silver lining to Arcane Weapons, it is such a mess of AP/WP opportunity cost. Not only does it cost 1 AP, you have to use an AP to reload your gun after, and it also costs 2/3 WP (though honestly you should just Warp Charge it if you're going to use it at all), for... a damage boost to a singular attack? It feels like too much effort, personally. And definitely the worst 1st skill to grab for any recruit. I actually looked it up, apparently some people like to pair Arcane Weapons with a Psycannon barrage, since the boost affects all the enemies hit? Sounds kind of neat, potentially (I could see stacking an additional +10 damage to that Barrage with the right setup), but I'm honestly still not sold on that for the fiddlyness. And the fact that's a late-game setup reliant on a specific gun drop. If you want huge AoE damage, a (advanced class not shown yet)Purifier can match that damage on their own, and then explodes into fiery death with the Justicar's Honour the Chapter AP boost or any similar effects. Regardless, I may test it next time I play deep enough in Chaos Gate since if nothing else, it's a weird thing I haven't tried before. At least the main 'benefit' of Arcane Weapons is that it doesn't really interfere, anyone who gets Arcane Weapons always has it in that bottom-right corner (for some reason). So it's not a mandatory path like any of the cardinal NSEW groupings if you want something else. I've been itching to talk about the Space Marine classes in the game, since I do think the setup is overall quite good. But I'm refraining for now until the LP's marines are at least around level 5 or so and we actually see more of their kits directly. Ectar isn't allowed to leave the ship, which is why the player gets promoted to commander instead of him despite seniority issues. (Ignore the fact that we also don't leave the ship). Presumably, he's ordering either a bombardment from the ship to get the baddies or a wave of unimportant soldiers and not the commanders' elite crew to take care of them

As this LP made me start playing again, I think the reason the Vindicare can't collect seeds is that they don't have a melee attack and it's a melee environmental object. The disguise/stabby assassin can harvest them fine.

You've got the vindicare vaulting around all nimble doing parkour poo poo, and then a space marine goes and just bulldozes through the obstacles to accomplish the same end through pure force

There's action economy benefits to be had as long as your willpower holds out, sure, but just in a general standpoint the option to take a single AP and put it somewhere it's more useful is fantastic. Not everyone is in a position to make great use of their AP. Justicars can ALWAYS find a good use for their AP, so long as they have willpower. It's a great tool. Arcane Weapons is not that tool, but they went to the same church on Sundays. Arcane Weapons lets you spend AP on one person who may not be in a useful position to give bonus ranged damage (based on spending ammo) to anyone else (Knights only). In other words, if the Purgator doesn't have a good shot at something that needs to die, and doesn't have an immediate use for the AP, Arcane Weapons might be the tool that lets you finish off an enemy and prevent it from getting off an attack somewhere else. Maybe. It's not really great at first glance! But what happens if you lean into it? What the gently caress do I even mean when I say "lean into it", a phrase you will hear me say repeatedly throughout the videos? Okay. So. At first glance, Arcane Weapons kind of sucks. If you have a Psycannon on your Purgator, which you probably do, it probably only has 2 ammo, and you have to spend an AP to reload it. Even if you Warp Charge it, you're getting 2 damage on someone else, for the net cost of 2 AP and 3 WP. However, it benefits from a lot of other choices you may have made. If you are running Psilencers instead, you're running on 4 ammo. Improvement. You can gain up to 2 ammo from your skill tree, and maybe you have the talent that gives you +1 ammo. Improvement. There's a wargear you can equip to increase magazine size by +1/2/3, depending on tier. There is a tier 2 Psilencer that can has more ammo and can be upgraded even further to something like 7 ammo base. Improvement. Purgators also can get access to Rapid Reload, a skill which (at base) gives you a 50% chance to instantly reload your magazine when empty. Obvious improvement. One of the upgrades to Arcane Weapons boosts crit damage on the attack, which could be nice given the use of something like Astral Aim or just a really high ranged crit chance. If you lean into it. Arcane Weapons can have up to 12, maybe even 14 ammo to work with. Being able to spend 1 AP/3 WP to be able to boost someone's ranged attack by 12-14 damage, with a bonus rider of +6-7 crit damage if a crit happens, and have a 50% chance of just reloading for free afterwards, isn't quite so bad. And you can do this at any range. Since you're using a Psilencer yourself, leaning into having a lot of ammo isn't the worst play anyways because Psilencers come with Scattershot, which also benefits from a large ammo pool and the dip into Rapid Reload. Power Armor choices can influence this as well - extra pockets for a focus crystal, or just increased focus to make your autos more reliable, or even both. Still, though, it's expensive to set up, in terms of wanting wargear and skill points (13 out of your 18), and if you lean into other, more obvious picks (Astral Aim tree, grenade pockets, the Support Fire tree), you won't be able to afford everything you might want a Purgator to have. On the other hand, it's not really far away, skill-wise, from picks you would already want, and they could still have most of the stuff you would want them to have.

If you're doing the hard Arcane Weapons lean, then honestly it sounds like you benefit from being a Devoted Practioner. Typically, the +3 skill points don't really help, because 18 points is enough to get the important stuff and I prefer the 10% ranged crit talent for consistency. But since you're not really speccing into massive ranged critting if you're leaning hard into that Arcane Weapons, then the +3 points enables you to get the Arcane Weapons while still having Astral Aim/Reload/Psilencer talents. Alternative is a Devoted Practioner who decides to not go Psilencer and uses a Storm Bolter, since those points can be redirected into Grenade pockets and talents instead (though you may have to remove some Arcane Aim Support points) and go for a hybrid-y support build with Grenades/Arcane Aim, and whatever your melee weapon does. Kind of a weird setup theory. Since I don't care for Devoted Practioner in my regular Purgator builds anyways, I may try that sometime in the future.

+3 Skill points is huge, most of the time for me. Though there are a bunch of other good traits (and some strictly worse ones! Like +10% chance of dealing afflicitions with melee weapons. Compared to just +10% focus!!) If I could mod the game to make everyone devoted pracitioner I probably would. (Maybe make like Iolanthus or Storm a Great Destiny instead.) The main use of Arcane Weapons I've seen mentioned when googling builds and such, is to dump it on a mini-gun Interceptor, IIRC. You teleport in and destroy a pod with one spread shot.

Duelist is a baffling trait that speaks to me of a much different design than what the game currently has. It is so stupidly specific for no reason and straight inferior as mentioned, it really needs to be +20% given the fact that the +10% focus talent exists. Of course, that statement also assumes that +% to melee affliction is in any way useful at all in the first place. No one has % to inflict a status in any of their skill trees, so it's purely applied via melee weapons. The ones that apply DoTs still means that the Marine meleeing in question has to expose themselves to that unit's turn of damage since DoTs are end of turn. And the ones that apply control are so mild and low odds that the Duelist talent simply doesn't save them, anyways. And yes, Tylana totally just cursed Jade Star there with Duelist.

Grand Master Kai calls us up to remind us of the spirit of the Grey Knights, which poses an interesting opportunity, and potential problem. Of course it's full hubris ahead, because I refused to miss out on unique event rewards. Meanwhile Valkir can just suck it and be vexed all she wants to. Oh noooo, my research speed. Whatever will I do now that I have Gate of Infinity? Really though, there are reasons to keep a deep roster beside the inevitable combat injuries. Events like this will only fire when there are enough healthy Knights to satisfy the event. Or like previous time we dispatched an Apothecary for a considerable amount of time to appease both Kai and Valkir in the same decision. Further events may also require 4 healthy Knights for action choices, like forming a boarding party or carrying out a mission that won't be played out like the normal missions. Many events have different ways of dealing with them or at least mitigating them, and having healthy Knights on standby is a good way to deal with such situations when they arise, assuming you still have enough to deal with any regular missions that will pop up soon.

Re: The Grey Knights being super duper top secret: Yeah, the Grey Knights are basically the space marine equivalent of super elite black ops secret agents. Their existence is strictly need-to-know basis. Partially because they're the special ops, so the more secret they are the better, but also because the Imperium's official stance to the public is denying the existence of Chaos as a whole. The average imperial citizen has no idea that Chaos even exists. Because you can't really admit to the public "Yeah there's a bunch of demons who will grant you wild power and make your wishes come true." So you can't admit the existence of the grey knights, specialized demon hunters, without also basically admiting the existence of demons to hunt. The imperium doesn't want people poking their nose into that sort of stuff. And like a lot of 40k lore, just HOW secret they are varies depending on what source or book you read. Some books say that other Space Marines who fight along side the Grey Knights end up getting mind-wiped afterwards to remove their memories of the event, Men In Black style. Some books will say that the Imperium just flatout KILL any survivors of a Chaos incursion where the Grey Knights are involved to kill any witnesses of Chaos or the Grey Knights. I think that level of stuff has been toned down in recent years though with the increased emphasis of Chaos as a big badguy force, just so the imperium isn't wholesale slaughtering as much of their own population as Chaos is just for the crime of seeing a Justicar. And for the Word Bearers: They serve Chaos as a whole. There's one traitor legion dedicated specifically to each god, and the rest are a more mixed bunch. Death Guard are the stinky boys who serve Nurgle in this game World Eaters are a bunch of angry berserkers who are dedicated to Khorn, god of war and blood and skulls Thousand Sons are a bunch of sorcerers and their ghost buddies who serve Tzeentch, god of magic and secrets and mutation and the Emperor's Children are a bunch of hedonist perfectionists who serve Slaanesh, god(/dess) of pleasure and extremism. The other five traitor legions are Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Black Legion, Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion, and they all kinda do their own thing.

I think basically the opening narration of this mission is that the Word Bearers (who are broadly speaking an Undivided legion, but certain warbands are pledged to one of the gods - which is the case for all undivided legions) were invading the planet for their own reasons and the Ultramarines were battling them, but neither side is aware of what the Death Guard or Grey Knights are doing - fighting a secret war of their own, basically. It’s possible that the Word Bearers were working with the Death Guard to be a distraction to keep other Imperial forces occupied but who can tell? Certainly the Knights are trying to stay off their radar.
