I have still not gone because I’ve procrastinated the poo poo out of my planning, so I have a new question: would I be a complete moron to go to the desert in summer months?

Unless you had a bunch of outdoor activities in mind, it makes no difference. It sounds like you've mostly mentioned in shows, they'll be air conditioned to the same temperature any time of year.

when did this resort fee nonsense start? I managed to find a super cheap room for a couple weeks from now and the resort fee will add 60%

It started when online booking and short term rentals used vc money to get into a price war with the hotels they were buying the rooms from. Just pull up the nightly prices of hotels in the middle of nowhere and you'll feel a lot better when you see joe schmo wants like 140/night

A lot companies are adding "fees" that way they don't have to show you the final price (unless you read the fine print) until you check-out but you'll still book the hotel, flight, cruise, etc.

Just pull up the nightly prices of hotels in the middle of nowhere and you'll feel a lot better when you see joe schmo wants like 140/night Short term rentals have tight regulations here (they're banned entirely in City of LV limits last I checked, and the county unincorporated areas recently implemented registration where each one has to be a certain distance from any other). Nobody who lives here wants to live near tourists visiting because tourists tend to get more loaded, more loud, more violent, and basically fall into the spell of Vegas as some sort of outlaw town where you can be your worst self and nobody remembers it after you've left. That's not the kind of neighbor anyone wants. The resort fee stuff happened because a few hotels were angry at how much online booking took out of their sales. I remember Sheldon Adelson complaining that Expedia made more money selling Venetian rooms than the hotel itself, and telling any reporter that would listen about how Expedia, Orbitz etc were so flush with money that they had corporate headquarters that made casino companies look dowdy by comparison. So they began hiding more of the room rate in a resort fee so that the rate quoted for Expedia/Orbitz/Travelocity/etc was lower, and thus the booking agency skim was lower. Some hotels tried not doing the resort fee thing, but because of that they were always higher priced than the hotels that advertised $19 a night with a $65 resort fee. And they always had lower occupancy rates because people kept falling into the trap. They eventually gave in and did the same thing. Much like 6:5 Blackjack, it dominates because people kept choosing convenience over advantage when there was still a choice to be made. True, i guess the rental thing was more of an Orlando problem which is where i first ran into resort fees/taxes. Always worth remembering that customers as a general class don't have the best critical thinking skills https://business.time.com/2012/05/17/why-jcpenneys-no-more-coupons-experiment-is-failing/ Also it's stated to hit over 90 at night, so here's a reminder to

They've got short term rentals in Vegas but it's a minimum of 30 days. If you are traveling and just need a place to live that isn't a casino it works really well.

So Mirage is going to close in July and spend about 3 years being refitted into Hard Rock. Maybe I got the wrong end of the such but I thought they were going to try to stay at least partially operational. Curious if this will impact prices and availability with the Strip losing 2 major resorts so close together. Fountainbleu is open now but that's a different market I think.

Overshadowed by the loss of an entire resort, but one for the foodies: if you want to try Picasso (Bellagio) you have until August. Just be aware they sold the paintings years ago.

I feel like FountainBlu is just a generic or clean beach or ocean themed Casino. It's nice but a little soulless and I have never, ever seen it busy. Losing the Mirage is kind of sad. It had character. For what it's worth, I thought the Hard Rock in Miami was nice.

If you're willing to grab a ride, there's an all you can eat made-to-order sushi place called Sakana, it's tucked away in a strip mall at the corner of Maryland and Flamingo (about 4 miles from the luxor) and has been amazing every time I've gone

The House of Blues was quite an asset early on, too, as the only similar venue was the original Joint at Hard Rock. It was a flagship hotel for a company that merged into the current MGM and then it was pushed down the corporate totem pole a ways. As far as midpriced there, Border Grill, House of Blues, maybe Libertine.

So me (Canadian) and my Japanese fiancee managed to plan out our entire Vegas honeymoon, reservations, bookings, all of those, before either of us clocked that the Fourth of July was happening right in the middle of it. How bad is this going to be?

I can't imagine Vegas being particularly bad for Independence Day. Usually Vegas swells with particular sporting events, and early July is a dead time for American sports. Plus it's gonna be hotter than hell so that probably keeps enough folks away for it to be too crazy.

How bad is this going to be? You're likely paying triple the amount for your hotel on the night of Thursday 7/4 than you would compared to another random summer Thursday. And table minimums will be as high as they would be on a weekend night. But other than that it's probably not a big deal, and it sounds like you were able to reserve whatever restaurants/shows you wanted anyway.

Vegas makes bank in the summer off concerts, shows and pool parties. The only slow time is I'd say is around September when schools starts or maybe January, February and March.
