Oh poo poo, I've done a total 180 on this and think instead that Mk4 is the greatest thing ever, and am HYPE once more!

Because apparently, some dude bought a bunch of Cephalyx stuff on mail order and was like "Please release their rules soon!" and got a handwritten message on his invoice saying "I'm sure they'll get rules for all 3 of their casters soon enough!" with the 3 underlined, so it wasn't a typo, and was in fact, a juicy spoiler! AW YISS. (God I am so easily bought).

Confusingly, this happened, without me noticing, ages ago. We kind of got two new casters, because what actually happened was a new Mortenebra came out and she works for Cryx or Cephalyx, and then sensibly Gaspy1 will also work for them now, too.

I'm not going to talk about how after they dropped pistol wraiths from Cephalyx I sold all my cryx and then they added them back in and now this, instead I'm going to rejoice, and play some games!

Actually got some games in the diary, this is wild. Any tips for someone going back in, having not played in forever? What's the easiest way to learn to play mk4 without just assuming the old wrong rules? Is there a convenient list of things that work differently?

Got excited reading this until seeing they did away with cards and force players into using a loving app to play.

I'm sure it's mega convenient in comparison, but I'm leery of poo poo that can be pulled out from under me, especially if I'm buying expensive toys for it, and especially especially with Privateer's history.

If it were optional, I would be game, but the post makes it clear it is not. It's a shame, my wife was just lamenting to me the other day how she'd like to play again.

I do know what you mean, but at the same time, being able to pull stuff from under me was, I think 'worse' when it happened before and it just meant your cardboard was wrong

On the point of paper copies, in November of 2022, they said that the app would support printing, eventually:

quote:

Q: When will the cards be printable?

A: Card-printing capability was a late addition to our development plan, so while we are committed to providing print capability, we currently cannot accurately forecast the timeline for availability.

18 months later, no sign of that feature. My phone's battery is garbage and I play infrequently enough that I need to check the stats for every unit every time, so I really hope they actually do this

Played a couple of games, the games great! Played Thexus into Locke (Convergence) and Cyphon into Bearka (troll bloods). I actually won both games, but I think in no small part just due to remembering my army better / my only differences being buffs.

When I first saw the new unit rules, I thought there were bits I didn't like / were bad. Playing them though, I actually think this is the best implementation of units in a table top game.

Them being limited to 5 or 6 models means you don't have so much to physically move. You can still get huge amounts of troops on a table if that's your thing but it's all just much more manageable and easier to read. Moving one and then putting the rest within 2 sounded like heresy. The first time you do it though, you're like "oh wait, this is actually the way I usually do it..." it's just that they can fudge around a bit. The cohesion rules feel sensible, and combined with the new AoE rules mean that templates are just not needed, so those new rules feel good too. I do miss spray templates, but actually all of this stuff speeds things up so much you just have to concede it's better.

I thought I'd hate the cards, having to remember all the gotchas, but I think that was just me having flashbacks to grimkyn, in practice, these things aren't really gotchas, they just let you do 'the thing' that you can almost do, they just make thinking about your big turn a lot easier.

"if I just had ONE more focus" "If only I was in range" etc etc. They just let you DO the cool stuff you wanna do, and the fact it's a one off card means it's not as if you can think like 'I don't care about knockdown because of this card" etc.

That's said, I think 5 is too many. I think it should be just 3. It felt for all of us like choosing them weren't meaningful choices.

Overall though I liked all the changes to the game more than I thought I would. It's just a shame they're so bad at marketing it.

Oh, sorry, one last thing actually, was that, I used to use war room and found it pretty good. The new app is kinda the same, the rules stuff is a bit quicker to load than the old insanely slow pdf, but actually linking to the rules is really bad and annoying.

Its a small thing really, because eventually I'll know the rules and then the app is just fine. But for it to be the only source of rules, no book to reference, and be this bad, is pretty inexcusable.

They've added a print to PDF for armies in the app. Desktop version only. The implementation isn't fantastic, but it's nice to finally have the option.

Hmmm. If the cards are still available to print on my own, even if not directly from the app, I'm somewhat interested.

While it passes cost of printing on to the consumer, it still gives me the option to have the cards. Part of the reason I liked Warmahordes was that having the cards made it more accessible than most games of its type. Even if you're not adhd as me, memorizing unit stats is a tall order for the average joe. Reading y'all talk about the new rules has me curious again, since they sound more streamlined.

You're never going to get a "ruleslite" wargame, but quality of life efforts do get big points from me, as a player.

Steamforged Games just announced they've acquired the Iron Kingdoms IP from Privateer.

https://steamforged.com/en-eu/blogs/brands/sfg-acquires-iron-kingdoms

The sale also includes P3 paint and a bunch of Privateer's smaller IP's that exist under the Iron Kingdom umbrella like Riot Quest.

I haven't been keeping up on my game companies, is Steamforged a notoriously bad one?

Looking at their page I see they at least have some Guild Ball starter teams STLs available for free, so maybe we'll see the WarmaHordes 3D print files available for sale before too long :v:

SFG have a history of over promising on big IP Kickstarters and many of their games post Guild Ball have been flawed beyond KS delivery issues. Rules are often quite bad, and having their bad fiction writer doing rules for several games has not helped. They also earned a lot of ill will with the way they acted around the cancellation of guild ball.

On the plus side, guild ball is a fabulous game, they've committed to supporting it again, and the entire company largely exists because of Warmahordes in the first place. There are several people there who really understand the game in great detail. So I would say it's more likely to be a success than any of their Kickstarters.

They're not really bad in a malicious way, they're more sort of bungling (like most other big KS game companies). Their Kickstarter games tend to bank on the allure of licensed IP's and tons of miniatures, which causes them to go dramatically behind schedule and usually end up with mediocre/unfinished gameplay. The one actively malicious thing they've done was the cancelation of Guild Ball, because people were "playing it wrong."

I guess it depends on how many of the guildball team is still around, they laid off 1/3 of the company this time last year and have been in 'run a new kickstarter to pay for the last one' territory for a few years now.

Even when Guildball was active they had been running it into the ground and blaming the community for being 'too competitive'.

Jamie Perkins is still doing things for them. But yeah, good point - weird that they did layoffs then bought a presumably pricey IP

No doubt there are hazards, but I'm net positive on this development. There are some very interesting ways to look at the sale.

Privateer Press' primary failing has been retailor support. Consequently, success for a Privateer Press game had a very low ceiling. They sold new stuff to their existing customers, while keeping costs so low it led to problems. There are no new players entering the ecosystem.

Steamforged is apparently knows and cares about retailor relations. Guildball, even with its Kickstarter origins, was set up in a way that really worked for retailors. Having a fresh chance at retail support Warmachine might actually have a shot at growing again.

Game support is time limited outside of 40k. The game had done well as far as can be expected for tabletop games, but it is a niche market. The reality is, if it's not making money, despite apparently succeeding as a table top game, then it's understandable that it'll be shut down. Who could argue with that? Oh, then the Guildball devs. They blamed it on their customers. For being too into the game.

It's odd because this is such an obvious failing on the part of Steamforged, and it's one thing that Privateer Press was actually good at. They maintained loyalty from their customers despite real challenges. Or at least, didn't burn the bridges for absolutely no reason.

So one good point, one bad. And now one wildcard. Steamforged's rules has been complained about for years. With this announcement, there is much pointing out that Privateer Press will keep developing the games themselves. The idea being the expertise will be kept. It's not clear how much of that expertise is actually still there. A lot of their really good devs left years ago to form their own company. Then there was a second exodus. There's still people their writing rules, but the extent to which they're not really breaking new ground rules wise is a little jarring considering they blew up so many of their factions. Retail support may become available again, but is there actual vitality left in Warmachine? At least we'll get to see.

Also notable is where a bunch of those former Privateer Press devs ended up: Atomic Mass Games. It's kind of interesting that it's a bunch of former Privateer Press personnel who have been the non-GW good story in the miniature gaming world for the past four years.

Apparently SFG did both a blog post update on their website, and a reddit AMA, and one of the interesting factoids from that was that they are planning a new 2-player starter box for later this year, with Khador and Cygnar as the included factions, and that the miniatures will be in hard plastic (high impact polystyrene, or HIPS, as they specifically said).

In the AMA, they did get asked if the STL files PP were using to 3D print the figures for Mk. 4 would ever be available for sale, and their answer was basically "no plans, but never say never". I'm going to guess that if they're investing money into the tooling costs for hard plastic minis, letting people buy STLs isn't going to be high on their list of priorities (unless they do so for factions/units that don't sell very well, or something like that).
