you're probably right about what Biden thinks, but the party at large hates legalization. Dems are convinced that the worst thing to happen to their party in the lasts 2 decades was "abolish the police" and that because TRUMP IS A CRIMINAL, that Dems can be the pro-cop party and win over all the law and order voters.

so they oppose legalization because cops oppose legalization.

I think there's probably a ton of Big Pharma money against it too, not to be all "weed cures everything, maaaan" but there would be a significant number of people who could take less prescription medicine if weed were fully legal

Who the gently caress wants to wait tables in a post-scarcity communist utopia? Are they apprenticing chefs under Papa Sisko trading lovely waiter shifts for culinary training?

They’re not actual businesses. The restraurants and vineyards are set up for fun because Sisko’s dad and Picard’s family find them fun and satisfying to manage and everything is probably for free. Many people in the federation could probably be described as extreme hobbyists.

I imagine a lot of jobs we consider “lovely” would be quite relaxing if we weren’t constantly worried about paying bills, not getting fired for smiling wrong, or having management constantly breathing down your neck making you say things and behave in ways no human would ever want to because they think it would make them an extra buck.

I could see how someone would cook for fun, and do it for groups of people to show off for fame, notoriety, etc but that doesn't explain how the other jobs get done. Who would sous chef for fun, we see Ben Sisko peeling potatoes when he visits so ok maybe you get free labor from family pitching in but who does that when he's gone. Who waits tables for fun, and so on. There's a lot more to a restaurant than the prestige job one might actually do as a hobby.

Picard's winery makes sense because we're shown how it's staffed: with Romulan POWs performing slave labor.

Sisko refuses to use replicated ingredients for philosophical food snob reasons. All those potatoes have to come from a farm and be peeled by hand.

But yes it is explicitly shown that most truly poo poo jobs like scrubbing plasma conduits or whatever are performed by sentient AI holograms created for slave labor. Just not in his restaurant.

Nah other species have their own starships designed for their own environmental requirements, we're shown examples of this such as the all-Vulcan USS Intrepid or the Benzite guy doing a short stint on the Enterprise before going back to his Benzite ship where he doesn't need a breathing apparatus. The few aliens on human Starships are either from species with nearly identical environments like Betazoids and Bajorans or the real freaks and masochists who actually volunteer to live in a semi-hostile environment.

There's a plot in DS9 about the stress of living on a human station (too cold, too bright) for years driving an alien exile insane with depression and he develops a severe addiction to cope with it.

God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Who will wipe this blood off us? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we need to invent?

i used to do newspaper work in rural red america. there was a retired businesswoman from india who married a big farmer. as farming these days is sitting in a million-dollar tractor spraying everything with chemicals, she didn't have anything to do so she opened a restaurant.

could the tiny town she opened it in support the place and have it turn a profit? absolutely not. was she successful in showing these very white people the joys of using spices and herbs in cooking? i have no idea, but she enjoyed doing it for a while and she lost a bunch of money but still kept it until she got bored. i left the area in 2018 and i understand she's closed the joint now, but there absolutely exist people who will just serve food to people as a way to enrich their lives.

i love cooking, but id sooner jump into a fryer than work in a commercial kitchen. if i were retired and had the opportunity to work six-top with no pressure to make any money, hell, i might do that

It's not prescribed in good faith, and I say that as someone who's in therapy and benefiting from it. But when the average liberal deploys concern trolling about therapy, it's just their passive aggressive way of saying "skill issue." Amber Frost really hit it on the head when she described Warren supporters back in 2019 as people who will sympathetically listen to your sob story, but as soon as you leave the room, mock you behind your back for your inability to succeed in hellish America. After all, their main issue was "hard working" people not getting awarded. They're thinking of themselves. People who are doing worse than them? Just not working hard enough. So for them, therapy is basically the culturally neutral equivalent of "Bless their heart."
