So let’s get started, shall we? Watch the intro! And already we start off with an enthusiastic tone! (King Adelbern of Ascalon watches the unending battle from atop a safe cliff) Scribe! Yes, my lord. Ahaha, look at the clothing difference! The king has this kickass fur armor suit with a fire sword and emerald shield, while his loyal scribe has rags to wear. I’m not saying he is a cheap bastard, as he has to spend his funds on the war, but still, ahaha. Yes, my lord. Take this message to Sir Tydus: Go forth and recruit the strongest, the smartest. As opposed to these weaklings down there. Look at them, holding their own for what must’ve been many fortnights. Seriously, only pansies manage to stop our city from being overrun by killer felines every day. Find me the heroes who will lead our kingdom to glory. Obviously ain’t gonna be these chumps. As you command, my king. Now, can I have my next week’s shirt and pants? The plumbing you redirected to our gigantic fire-hose doesn’t seem to be working on our enemies, and we can’t do our laundry. Oh, c’mon! They seriously don’t have a man using that trebuchet? You have constant invasion attempts and you don’t even have someone manning the long range siege weapon? And why is it pointed at OUR wall? God, the wet-blanket intro lady was right, we ARE doomed… So, the humans in the city of Ascalon are in the middle of this war with the charr. Who are the charr, exactly? This. And please refrain from the furry jokes; they are too overplayed. Especially considering how badass this race is. Quick history lesson: the charr were here before the humans. They were ruthless motherfuckers who once held control of vast territories. They were so powerful, the gods had to actually birth the humans for the sole purpose of driving the charr back behind what is now Ascalon, as well as other territories. And even then, the gods needed to help the humans even more. The charr are basically hulking, bipedal felines that have the initial desire to simply grow more powerful. They really have no other motivation other than they really want their territory back, through any means necessary… I will go in depth of their actions as the story goes on. Oh hey, we can play our guy now. Man, finally out of boot camp and ready to get some kitties wet. Wish I had a better weapon, but the king said the scratch post he’s installing outside the Wall will assure us victory… Excuse me, you’re Ape Hawk, aren’t you? Yes, civilian. I think Sir Tydus was looking for you. He said he had some good news for you. Aw, man. You mean I get better stuff already!? gently caress ye- Uh, no… but you get money! …that’s...helpful in a time of war. When everything should be assigned to me and stuff. The king is now relying on everyone killing monsters and stealing their drops. Cheap bastard. So, now that we have a quest, I can show off the minimap! Waypoints are the giant green stars on both your minimap and compass. If it is too far, then it will be guided by a green arrow on the edge of your compass. Pretty ordinary stuff. A short stroll afterwards… I’ve been looking for you everywhere, Ape Hawk. Yeah, I bet you searched high and low for me by standing on that small step, huh? The king told me to find you and I did, okay? The king has ordered a new offensive against the charr. Scratch post didn’t work? Oh it did. For the charr. Yeah, the felines set it on fire, pushed it down, and rolled it towards our men. The only scratching they did was to light the rope. Did you know charr could do that? ‘Cause we didn’t. This is your chance for glory and adventure, but you’ll need to know more about your craft before going north of the Wall. Tell you what: Travel to the southwest gate, which will take you to Lakeside County. I’ll have Artemis waiting for you outside. She can teach you a trick or two. So, follow the green star? Just go and learn how to shoot stuff better. I have to go tell the king that the charr are not interested in fish… Yessir! Now that we have an actual quest, we can take a gander at the quest log! Pretty simple: Primary Quests are Plot Quests, and Secondary Quests are SideQuests. Summaries are provided to tell the player what they need to do, green highlighted words are stuff you should look out for, and Reward is what you get for doing the things. All we need to do is head out the only gate in and out of this place and... You must be the aspiring Ranger I was asked to meet. Yo. Alright then, let’s get started. We’ll begin by giving you a hands-on experience with your bow, but you should keep in mind that this profession requires a diverse skill set. As a Ranger, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to set traps, gain an animal companion, and use nature ritual to alter the entire battlefield. And which one of these will be taught to me before I face off against the Charr? Shut up. Believe you me, enemies will fear your combination of range, speed, and toughness. Yes, it’s good to be a Ranger. : And drat, it feels good to be a gangsta. Rookies… So, our first assignment is to kill a queen skale so that its children will stop killing innocent humans and bringing them to feed on…. Wait, what? So, they give a novice the job to kill a fish queen because humans are being fed to her. Yeah, humans are dying because they tell recruits to kill a skale queen instead of walking twenty feet and one-shotting her. This city has hosed-up priorities, man… Oh, by the way, those dangerous skale: Yeah, I am sitting right in front of them and they are doing nothing. Seriously, they don’t attack unless you attack them first. A human is even walking right by them! You don’t even need to kill them; the arrow tells you right where the queen is, look: Guess I better rid humanity of this lazy monstrosity. Welp. One dead fishy later (read: two auto attacks) Oh hey, we got skills! Let’s check them out! But before diving into them, we have to first know about their legend. Basically, each skill has either a default or concise description. When moused over, they will tell you how exactly what that skill will do. Additionally, they will show you their stats: This is the Energy icon. Most skills have an Energy cost of either 1, 5, 10, 15, and 25. (The number will appear to the left of the icon to indicate how much the skill costs. This is the Adrenaline icon. Warrior, Paragon, and Dervish all use this as a means to fuel most of their skills. This is different from energy in that you have to build it up by either attacking (one attack, whether auto- or using an attack skill, grants one strike of adrenaline) or using certain adrenaline-gaining skills. This is the Cast Time icon. Every spell has one (as well as a few attack skills). Basically, the number next to the icon will tell you how many seconds it will take to cast a skill. Can range anywhere between zero seconds to ten. This is the Recharge icon. Most skills have a recharge time. The number next to this icon will tell you how many seconds it takes for a skill to recharge. Now, we can check out our skills we just learned. This little fella has quite the history. When the game first came out, it dealt additional damage (as opposed to flat armor ignoring damage) and had a recharge time of 6 seconds. No one used it as the Ranger had much better attack skills to choose from after about 1 hour from getting this skill. Then, in January 2008, it was changed to have a 1 second activation (bow attacks have a roughly 2.5 second activation). This led to Rangers being able to pull off powerful chain attacks in a matter of 3.5 seconds (normal attack skill, followed by Power Shot, followed by a half second attack skill). Because of how attacks work in this game, attack skills have no aftercast, meaning you could activate them in quick succession. This meant that it would take a little over one second for all the damage to reach your target. In PvP, this was pretty much overpowered until Arenanet nerfed it to its current function. Used to be used by split rangers in Guild versus Guild battles back in the first two years of the game. You can get up to 9 health regeneration with high-enough Wilderness Survival, great for staying in someone’s base for a long time. Had a duration of 10 seconds until Arenanet tried to buff it randomly. People still use its replacement (a drat useful self condition remover), so meh. Meet Haversdan. He shows up after Artemis goes back into the city. Haversdan tells us that we are not yet ready to kill monstrous saber tooth tigers, so he tells us to learn from someone with more experience. Also, I like how Tydus is telling everyone just how badass I’m gonna be. He’s a bro. Well, since we are outside and our waypoint is a ways away, why don’t we check out how the map works? This is the world map. Not the whole game’s map, but just the tutorial zone’s map. It’s like the minimap, tells you just where the waypoint is. It also lets you fast travel to outposts and towns whenever you want. Handy. Anyway, following the stone path south will bring us to the town of Ashford. Hey, did I mention that this game is beautiful? Because this game is beautiful, even with the crappy settings I’m playing this on. A short stroll down the road brings us to Devona. I’m glad you’ve come. See, a lot of people say that, but then they just send me off somewhere L I can’t shake the feeling that there’s trouble on the horizon. and I’d be glad to have your help if and when it arrives. Only if I get a better bow. There are some nice worms for you to kill over by- Just forget it. In the meantime, there are plenty of people here who need assistance with one thing or another, and I’m sure you’ll find the lessons you learn here will be invaluable in the future. Yeah, I’m sure sweeping a broom and mowing lawns will help me fight giant cats… No, these tasks are slightly more… You know what, you’ll find out later. So far, we have gotten Experience for running to other people and killing a non-hostile bipedal fish. Don’t worry, it gets… slightly less dumb. I've heard talk among the townsfolk of unsettling rumors coming from Meerak the Scribe. Like what? Well, I don’t like talking to the locals here. They get too… clingy. But I heard confused murmurs, and that is enough to arouse suspicion. Instead of babbling to random strangers, he ought to send word to the authorities if he's come across something truly important, but I'm sure he's too engrossed in his books to think of anything practical like that. How do you even know it is that important? For all we know, he could just be spreading those rumors to get attention. Those scribes are lonely, man. My duties in town keep me from looking into this matter myself, but if you could go to Ashford Abbey to the north and ask him about it, I'd appreciate it. Oh, look. Someone else wants to send me away. This time, to talk to someone who is probably just a gossip. Well, there’s a shield in it for you! Wait, really? I don’t have to kill something for it? We REALLY don’t like talking to Meerak, but the king likes getting updated by him, so… After another short stroll, we end up at the Ashford Abbey, a place of worship for one of the five gods and a sanctuary for the townspeople. Wait, what’s that next to the monument? That…looks like it doesn’t belong… Umm. Yeah, I’m just gonna wait until the chained astral alien thing goes away. That seems… not safe to go near. This is looking quite good! I really loved your stories about the history of Power Shot and Troll Unguent. How it worked, and how it was changed. The nice tidbits of information like that are definitely interesting, and what I'm gonna keep an eye on this LP for.

I will definitely be following this. Guild Wars is still my MMO of choice, and I'm interested to see how you translate it into SSLP format.

If anything this game as a great soundtrack. But then I am also a bit of a Jeremy Soule fanboy. And I bought this game and the two "expansions" a while ago but I never got that far into them. Maybe I should pick it up again, even if I must admit I've been kinda spoiled by WoW as the lack of any clear picture of what to do most of the time annoyed me. But maybe I should give it another go.

Same, I've got a free character slot too that I've been debating filling. You want a Mesmer to join your team of snark and awe? I can also Try running a Ritualist down to Ascalon and try joining up with you post-searing

Why wouldn't he want a mesmer? That thing is probably my favorite MMO class of all time. Looking good so far. Used to be heavily into GW, but burnt out midway through Nightfall. Came back for a week or two recently but couldn't stick with it, but it's still a great game. (if sadly empty now it seems... )

Well if you need some more bodies Ive got a Warrior that's ready to throw themselves at anything and die repeatedly. One thing is for sure, I will most likely learn one or two things I've missed about the game and realize that I probably made some really dumb decisions with my character. Not to mention most likely missed quests as well.

I've been looking for a reason to reinstall this. It's been about 2 years since I last played as well. I'll be following this, and I might join in as well, if you'd like.

I remember playing this when it came out. I'm pretty sure this is the game that got me into MMOs and playing with hundreds of other people online. Good luck with some of the later bosses as they're very tough with just henchmen.

Hey, it can't hurt to have pals going with this A lot less micro needed when you get right down to it. Honestly, I'm willing to throw any Profession out at this, I can get them to the first main story mission at roughly the same level Apehawk'll be at the time, and follow along from there (With the occasional sauntering off to upgrade armor when he's up to that point)

Never thought I'd see this LP'd. Kind of a shame you're starting off in Prophecies, though - it has by far the slowest, if gentlest, learning curve. Once my laptop gets back from the shop, I can pitch in with a ranger or dervish if the meat grinder needs be.

This game is loving gorgeous. I had a bunch of friends that tried to rope me into it when it first came out, but I never ended up playing it. Mechanics look pretty standard. Are there any odd systems?

I started off with Prophecies for the chronological route. It is the longest campaign, yes, but it is also, in my opinion, the best one to showcase for the game. Oh, and don't think I am simply going to leave the tutorial zone hecka early like a lot of people; I am showing off everything in this stage of the game, and trust me, there is a LOT to see. As for the mechanics, I plan to have a character/mechanics write up ready to post tomorrow before going back into the plot. Otherwise, people will be lost. The mechanics both are and aren't standard. You'll see why later, but remember, this game actually did stuff different than other games. Again, people, start posting builds! I don't care how many each person has; this game is loving LONG. Also, thanks for mentioning the stories of the skills, and trust me, there are going to be some articles with some of these coming up.

Once you get to Lion's Arch, my Necromancer can join up with you. He's beaten all the stories that aren't Prophecies, so I'll be willing to help throughout Proph. Also, once you can, I'll help you get a Black Widow if you'd like for your Ranger.

I tested this when it was still in Alpha and got bored after Beta. I don't know if people would be interested to know what happens during an early build of a game that is most likely forgotten. Mes/Elem was my favorite. If something didn't have negative pips (do they still use that?) or weakened in some way, I was dead. Killing something quickly took too much effort and the psychological image of slow death was a thrill. Scalding Coffee fucked around with this message at 06:35 on Aug 20, 2011 |

And yes, I know that I do not have a secondary profession yet, but once I get out of tutorial zone, I will be able to take requests. VVV Oh, I know, and I want them to play, too! I think the big thing here is that people want to actually hang out with you and join the LP when you start getting to some of the later parts. Pre-Searing is one thing (Since you're capped at only one other person anyway), but once you actually leave the tutorial land... Basically, the issue at hand is "Why run with henches and heroes all the time when you can have actual people working with you?". You've got a couple volunteers in the thread already who are willing to start up new characters to join the fun Hell, I wouldn't mind tossing in my hat to try contributing a bit to the LP myself. One of my main IGNs are "Aridane Casoria" (Ele/Rit), I'll try to get in touch with you tomorrow some time about other details. Alectai fucked around with this message at 07:13 on Aug 20, 2011 |

Okay. What do you want me to be when I meet up with you in Lion's Arch? Anyway, for a beastmaster build, you want the following things: Troll Unguent. (Naturally) Charm Animal. (Duh. Until you have Heal as One or Comfort Animal, which acts as Charm Animal.) Comfort Animal./Companionship (Basic heal for your pet. It's useful. Companionship heals the one with less health. Keep Comfort Animal until you have Heal As One, and then switch to companionship. If you want a different Elite, switch back to comfort animal.) Heal As One. (Pet's Attack Steals 21 HP, and you heal over 100 at activation. Darling Darling Please) The other three skills should be your secondary profession, usually Monk or Necromancer if you feel daring. Points should be placed thusly: 12+4 in Beast Mastery, 9+1 in Wilderness Survival and 9 in either Death/Blood Magic or Healing/Prot Magic. If you want, I can create a Warrior or a Monk to start from Pre-Searing, but I want to use my Necro for Proph to join you. Also, I just now found out that Comfort Animal and Heal as One keep your pet with you.

Rangers are the bomb. My favorite build was R/E earth tank. Armor of Earth Distracting Shot Poison Arrow *E* Troll Unguent Stone Striker Storm Chaser Stoneflesh Aura I forgot the name of the last skill, but it was a bow attack that caused bleed if used on a moving target...Screaming Arrow or something maybe? 12 Earth 9+1 Marksmanship (depending on bow requirement) Divy up the rest between Expertise and Wilderness Survival, heavier towards WS. Setup your gear to be +15 vs earth damage, maintain stone striker, armor of earth, and stoneflesh aura. If you run low on energy, pop Storm Chaser. Watch and laugh as basically no physical/elemental damage can touch you, while the enemies die of poison/bleed damage. Used to solo avicara up in mineral springs, the forest/beach in FoW, forgot the name, but there were elemental guys in the dark evil part of nightfall, and I even took The Drought in that one mission alone. I'd love to see the old build come back, power to the rangers.

I know this isn't the correct thread to ask in but does anyone got any decent build suggestions for a lvl 7 Warrior/Ranger? Or is it a bit too early to really bother with that and just go with whatever feels right? Or just possibly change my secondary class into something else. (Can't remember if that was possible or not actually.)

You can't change your secondary until much later - not until you've completed Augury Rock (Prophecies), Nahpui Quarter (Factions), or Hunted (Nightfall). Augury Rock in particular comes late in the campaign. Can't say I'm familiar with Warrior/Ranger, as I'm kinda rusty and was never very good at the game (three max-level characters and a lot of hours logged, only ever beat one campaign), but I highly recommend the very informative wiki.

Ranger main here (Elementalist being my standard secondary to combine with a Shocking bow and Barrage spam), though I also have a Mesmer and Dervish at 20. Never beat Prophecies or Nightfall, though - gently caress Ruins of Morah and Ring of Fire. For those wondering, Factions and Nightfall are two separate expansions/campaigns - if Prophecies is the European fantasy setting, Factions is Asia and Nightfall is Africa. Factions is much shorter than Prophecies, but also ramps up much faster and harder, and is much less newbie-friendly. Nightfall is roughly the middle ground.

This bring back memories when I bought the game a month after its release. The community has changed a lot but it was so great seeing the devs come online and chat with the players. I haven't played much Guild Wars since college so, if you need an extra hand, I have my main Necromancer willing to help. All my other characters (of each profession except paragon) are level 20.
