Trout Clan Daimyo

In the years after Bayushi Shoju became Shoju I, Emperor of Rokugan, many things changed, and many remained the same. The Clans were reordered and reorganized, and while there was peace between Great Clans, the commoners knew the depredations of bandits, ronin, and other, worse threats. Shoju I, with his Bloodsword, Ambition, by his side, became paranoid, and formed a force of secret informants and spies to monitor his Empire for traitors, conspirators, and malcontents. I, Miya Shouko, witnessed with my own eyes the suffering of the people during this period, for it was during this time that I came of age and travelled the land as one of the Miya Heralds.

But in many parts of the Empire, there were those who were largely unconcerned with the activities of those in the halls of the powerful. To many in the provinces not controlled by any of the Great Clans, the fate of the Emerald Throne was less urgent than making sure enough food grew to feed the village, and protect that food from bandits. They honor and revere the Emperor, of course, but he is so far removed from their daily affairs that he is almost a legend. Certainly, in the time of Shoju I, there were many lands that suffered from bandit attacks, wandering bakemono, and other terrors with little or no aid from either the Imperial forces or the Great Clans. In those days, a wandering ronin—of which there were many—could be a dangerous bandit…or an honored protector.

-Excerpts from the introduction of The Scorpion Emperor: A History, by Miya Shouko.

The village of Mitsuishi Mura is a small village named for the three standing stones arranged in the central area. They were said to have been placed there by the Kami Togashi during the days after the Kami fell, when they wandered Ningen-do before the formation of the Emerald Empire. It is an ancient village, though of little importance for commerce or agriculture, and since it lies outside the lands of the Great Clans, near the Shinomen Mori, it is very rarely visited by anyone of great importance. The villagers who reside there have enjoyed many years of peace, rarely bothered by the outside world.

The recent upsurge in ronin population and unrest in the land, however, have not left even Mitsuishi Mura untouched. You have been wandering the Empire, and have come here for reasons of your own, perhaps seeking something, perhaps having heard that the villagers there are seeking assistance in protecting their homes from dangerous elements. Whatever the cause, you have now arrived.

Please post what your reason for coming to Mitsuishi Mura was, no matter how vague, as well as what you are looking for or doing once you arrive in the village.

(Also, please post your character sheets in this thread to help keep me sane)

Marumaru

Marumaru takes a deep long breath of the chill autumn air, pleased to have finally reached Mitsuishi Mura. The village looked peaceful, but she hoped that appearances were deceiving in this case. An old man had told her the villagers were looking for warriors. A chance to prove her skill, and more importantly to demonstrate bushido. Compassion, one of the tenets she'd had few chances to practice.

Well, she wasn't going to practice it standing around gazing at the scenery. Adjusting her pack, Marumaru walks on, looking for a teahouse. They'd turned out to be good places to get information, plus a some hot tea and dumplings would take the chill off. Especially some sweet dumplings. After that, if she hadn't heard anything at breakfast, she'd seek out the headman and offer her services in protecting the village. But breakfast first.

Shingen

The burly old man sighs as he enters the village, a straw hat above his gray hair and two swords on each side of his body, with a third dangling on his back. This will be the year he'll finally forgot this stupid quest for strength and glory of his that consumed forty years of his life. Yes, maybe he'll lay down his sword and start a peaceful life on Mitsuishi Mura as soon as his job as a guard ends. Still, there's always the possibility... The possibility to have another duel. To have another victory, to actually get closer to his goal.

And there's the possibility of dying. His body is not the same as before, and his reflexes have been dulled by the years. It's a matter of time until a bandit gets lucky and shoves a spear on his heart, and Shingen started to have doubts on whether he would actually survive this year before retiring. "Bah!" He grumbled while searching for the village's inn. This kind of thought strangely made him hungry all the time. Perhaps the prospect of mortality makes one more aware of what to do to continue living...

Don't have a fire cow, man
Pushing aside the stalks of grass, Inuniku surveyed the scene. The monkeys were going about their typical monkey day, doing strange monkey things. No sign of the small self-important ones that chased him with sticks. No sign of the big self-important ones with the long steel claws, either.

Good-good. Time to eat.

With a rustle, the grass fell back into place as he scurried off, slowly making his way closer to the village. Every so often he poked his head up to make sure the coast was clear. His target was very close now. The paper house with all the tasty smells coming from it. It had been almost two days since he'd had a proper meal, and his stomach loudly protested the state of affairs. Stealing from the pink skins was dangerous, but there was nothing for it. Animals were far too skittish to rely on hunting this close to the Shinomen.
Crawling on his belly, he slowly skulked in the underbrush, getting as close as he could before he had to make a mad dash towards the safety of shadow among the buildings. One final glance around to make sure the coast was clear, and he ran for it.

Tomoe

East, without purpose
The autumn leaf floats in wind
At the season's change.

Tomoe wanders into the village like she wanders into any village. There are few places for a blind woman to settle in Rokugan, so settle she does not. She turns to the first friendly sounding fellow she can hear, and asks for directions to the teahouse. For a blind musician, such places are a godsend- a nice captive audience that does not require moving about.

The road always wearies her. There are many who think to prey on a blind young woman.

There are many who learn a lesson in politeness.

Travel is common for Qiu and his daughter. They need to travel often, for the dictates of Qiu's training. Mitsuishi Mura is in danger - and that puts it on their itinerary. Where there is danger, heroes can be found. And where heroes can be found, Qiu must be to train them.

"Come, Jiao. We must see if anyone will lend us a bad. If they will not, we'll have to set about making one."

The girl following the old man sighs, shaking her head. She looks down at her dusty dress, once brightly colored. It has long since faded.

"I really hope we don't have to do that."

"Shhh. The Tao provides to those who are in need. We must simply find where we are needed."

Yasuhira's stomach growls as the village finally comes to sight. Normally he'd simply breeze through it, stopping only to eat and buy some supplies, but today he can't be bothered to keep going any further. His previous employer was a rat of a merchant if ever there was one, but he paid well enough - it shouldn't be a problem to rest for a while. For once, he doesn't have to worry about affording his next meal.

Still, he should not linger too long. Winter is coming, and it's not likely anyone in this backwater village even needs a yojimbo. Stop for a day or three, then press on towards Zakyo Toshi. Come snowfall, all of the vipers in that pit will probably be looking for a bodyguard.

The thought sours his mood. He frowns, adjusts the spear and the furoshiki hanging from it and stomps off towards the village, looking for the inn. Maybe a good meal will cheer him up.

Going to assume everyone's going to the teahouse even them as didn't explicitly state it, since it seemed common enough.

Mitsuishi Mura Teahouse
Qiu, Tomoe, Yasuhira, Shingen, Marumaru

The teahouse in this village is quite rustic and plainly appointed, and quite large. When you enter, there appear to be no other guests besides the lot of you.

The owner, a beaming peasant, rushes forward to great each of you as you arrive. "Welcome, oh honored guests, to the Optimistic Maneki-Neko Teahouse! Please, come, sit, be welcome. There is rice and sake, and soup. Welcome, welcome, we always have room for a Brother of Shinsei here, yes indeed, and your young ward, as well. Ah, Samurai-san, please, allow me to guide your steps to our most comfortable spot, so that you can rest and play your lovely shamisen if you please. Yes, of course, I shall bring food for you at once. So many visitors, I am truly blessed today!"

You hear a dog barking outside, and the unctuous tavernkeeper bows again to all of you. "Please, don't mind Pochi, I will go see what is disturbing him at once." As he scurries off to see to the dog, his wife and children (you assume) begin bringing out food and drink for you.

Inuniku

Your stealthy dash towards the teahouse goes unseen by the pink-skins, but a loud barking erupts from beneath the building and a dog bursts into view, stopped just short of you by a rope tied around it and connected to a stake below the building. He must have caught your scent! A pink-skin comes out shortly, calling to the dog as he comes. "Pochi-chan, knock off that racket! You are disturbing our honored guests! What has got into you!"

Well, no matter. If she needed to interfere, she would- but she had a feeling the two at that table could handle themselves. Instead, she finishes her tuning and begins a song.

"The unicorn maiden rode onward

Her commander had called her forward

Her love was far away from her
And joined by Sorrow did she ride
For only he knew of tomorrow
And of all the tears she'd cried.

Now only kami know her gravestone
Laid on some forgotten hill
Her love he died a-wasting
But they say he seeks her still.
His ghost it yet a-wanders
Under hill and over stone.
Crying, 'Oh my love come back,
For I cannot go on alone.
Our families have worn white
But we can yet wear the red,
And this field of yellow flowers
Can be our marriage bed.'"

Qiu

Qiu glances at Jiao, to be sure she doesn't get angry. He holds a hand out to her, a sign to stay calm. He smiles up at the men, then.

"Surely, my friends, there is room for many here. Would you begrudge an old man and his daughter a seat? I would happily share the table with you. I do not want any trouble."

It is wise to bow and move with the storm as it comes...but Qiu also has a duty to test those around him for heroes. Perhaps one will come to his defense. If not, he believes he can handle simple bullies...but he should give them a chance to step forward first. With so many tough-looking fellows, perhaps one is a hero in the making.

If there weren't so many potential heroes present, he would probably just have given up the seat.

Shingen

"Much appreciated." Shingen smiles at the innkeeper as he receives his bowl of rice, starting to frantically eat it a second later, in a quick storm of hashi waving up and down, bringing food inside the man's mouth. His eating is interrupted by the four newcomers, and the old Ronin carefully put his bowl near the floor after they start to threaten Jiao.

"Back when Hantei was the Emp'ror, the youngsters knew better than threatening their Elders and the ladies. Something must have gone amiss if this sort of thing is becoming common." He says out loudly for the rough men to hear, his hands approaching the grip of his Katana. "There are many tables here, enough for your lot. Let those two alone, I'd hate to see four grown men having their arms cut down."

Yasuhira

"Please, calm down. There really is room enough for all of us." Yasuhira speaks softly, but his earlier sour mood returns. He conceals his frown with a bow to the old man. "If these gentlemen do not care for sensei's company, you are more than welcome at my table." He shuffles on his knees around the table to make room for the two - and to put the table between himself and the bullies. His spear leans against the wall, his sword lies on the floor to his right. This might end up embarrassing.

The burly one sneers at Yasuhira and Shingen, ignoring Qiu's politeness for the moment. "That's our table too. Tell you what...the ladies can stay if they're going to play nice, but all you geezers and brats, you'd best get out of here. You wouldn't want the Red Fists getting word that you were trying to edge in on our territory, now would you?"

Yasuhira

So much for the quiet evening. Why is it all gangsters act like this?

Yasuhira stands up with a sigh and fixes his eyes on the burly one. "I have no intention of being pushed about by some backwater lowlife's toadies with nothing to do. Run back to your mighty Red Fists if you will, we are eating here." He adjusts the wakizashi in his belt.

Marumaru

Marumaru has been listening, initially confused but clearly getting more and more annoyed. She slams her cup down on the table and puts a hand on her sword, propped against the table next to her. "I don't know what a Red Fist is, but I know bandits when I see them. This isn't your territory anymore. If you leave now, I'll forget your rudeness."

On seeing the clearly unfriendly (and armed) reception they're getting, the ruffians back slowly towards the door, jeering. "You'll regret this, once we tell oyabun about this, you're not going to have a chance to go back on your rudeness!"

Then they're gone. The innkeeper, pale, stammers out his thanks.

"Those men are trouble...Not that we're ungrateful, but you should probably be on your way before they come back in force...There's no charge for the food and drink, of course, of course..."

Marumaru glares after them for a minute, then sits back down to finish her food, a slightly disconcerting smile on her face. "Leave? Didn't you hear them? They're going to get this oyabun person." She takes a sip of tea, finds it scalding, then blows on it to cool it down. "If I leave, I'll miss him. And besides, I cam here to offer my services to the village. I wouldn't be much use if I couldn't deal with a few ill mannered bandits."

Qiu

Through the intimidation, Qiu remains placid and calm, smiling faintly. He bows his head.

"Thank you all for what you have done. I do not like trouble, and I am honored that you have prevented it for me...but now, I believe, we have done something dangerous. Shinsei teaches us: A stray dog sees only what it chases. We have set the stray dog to chasing this place, for we have turned him from its door."

Qiu stands, bowing low to the innkeeper.

"I appreciate your gifts, but I cannot allow what has happened here to hurt you and your family. Thus..." He turns to the samurai, speaking more firmly. "Will you join me, then? It is our words which have started this. It is our hands which must protect these people from what those words have wrought. I am Qiu, a monk of Shinsei, and I urge you - join me in defending these people from the wrath of these Red Fists."

"And so did Kanako slay the bandit."

She settles back into her seiza and continues to peacefully eat. "I have no intention of leaving before such pigs. Cowards and wretches deserve everything that comes to them."

Shingen

"Kwa ha ha! Looks like they should be called the Yellow Bellies, it seems!" Shingen guffaws as he relaxes at the sight of the bandits leaving. He then picks up his rice bowl and continues to gorge on its contents. "I've fought bigger and meaner men before, Innkeeper, but I don't want to wreak havoc on your place." He then turns to the other Inn patrons, a big smile forming in his face. "Don't worry, Monk-san. I came here looking for a job and an opportunity to practice my craft, and it looks like i just found a way to do both at the same time. About the rest of them, however..."

The Ronin lifts himself up, slamming his sheated No-dachi in the floor like a walking cane. "Truth being told, twenty years ago i would not need help to deal with Bandits." He says in a hushed murmur.

Peering out from behind the innkeeper, the ratling marked the scent and faces the five unpleasant pink-skins. Troublemakers in the burrow had to be watched and accounted for. Scurrying towards the farthest table from the remaining customers, he peered at them with obvious curiosity.

"Riceballs, please-please. And dumplings!"

He rubbed his paws together eagerly as visions of the delicious treats danced in his head.

The innkeeper frowns. His family brings food for the nezumi, as he speaks to you.

"If I may be so bold as to answer your question, Samurai-san, the oyabun resides somewhere within the woods or the hills, in a camp with most of the Red Fists. Those men probably sent one or two of their number off to report to him, but the more present danger is the one they call Brother Ox...and he lives no more than five minutes from here."

That doesn't give you too long to relax before this Brother Ox gets here.

Shingen can't help but frown at Marumaru's question, and starts to scratch his beard while answering. "I'm not a Grandfather, at least not yet. And if they aren't off to call their boss, it's definitely this Ox fellow that is coming here." He bows at the Innkeeper while approaching the place's exit. "So i will just do the polite thing and wait for them here outside, eh?"

She looks over at Tomoe as they go out. "I mean no offense, but can you really help in a fight? I mean, since you're..." She trails off lamely.

Qiu smiles.

"I have no doubt in my mind that you will be heroes, then. Jiao, be a good girl and watch at the window. Do not come outside."

He stops outside the door, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. He focuses, trying to move himself with the flow of the universe. The land will tell him what is needed.

"Shinsei teaches us: You need no armor, you need no sword. You need only to know that you cannot be defeated. Eyes, I am sure, are likewise not truly needed. You have heard the skill of her fingers upon the shamisen, yes? Then let her show us the skill of her hands upon the sword."

The ratling was busy sticking the dumplings with a chopstick and dropping them one by one into his mouth, accompanied by loud mmmm's of relish. As the steel-claw-pink-skins began standing up, he stopped abruptly, watching them. The dumpling fell and bounced off of his nose.

"Where you go-go? Inuniku promise he bathed last week! Maybe not like the food?"

Even the old man was leaving. This was getting worrisome.

"Maybe have to pee? Inuniku watch pup then, yes?"
