Was wondering when Destruction cards were gonna be announced. The last briefcase match between Okada and KA was fantastic, but there hasn't been a IWGP defense since May! This is getting ridiculous. Why can't they have AJ beat Naito or something?

So, I've been having trouble keeping up with NJPW since Wrestle Kingdom. I've got the gist of the Bullet Club/CHAOS stable war going on, but why are El Desperado and Iizuka part of Suzuki-Gun now? (and god drat, how long has this feud between Yano and Suzuki been going?)

Iizuka turned on his partner Yano and joined Suzuki-gun at the Yokohama Arena show in May. CHAOS are essentially faces now so it made sense to split off the two most heelish members in Yujiro and Iizuka.

Desperado has shown heel tendencies ever since he debued and finally turned at one of the Kizuna road shows when he beat down Alex Shelley after losing a match to him and joined Suzuki-gun during the post show press conference.

There is nothing ridiculous about a Japanese belt not getting defended for four months. Especially if it's being held by a heel fly-in and one of those months was the G1. I'm sure the Sumo Hall show will have a title match.

it's not ridiculous but it is a little annoying that the champion is in tag matches both nights. it's not like there's a dearth of challengers either. i'm not very excited about the destruction cards.

Compared to what? I mean, in a perfect world we'd get one card of

quote:

G.B.H. (Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma) vs. Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata
Forever Hooligans (Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson)
Time Splitters (Alex Shelley & KUSHIDA) (c) vs. Suzuki-gun (Taichi & El Desperado) - IWGP JR. TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Bad Luck Fale (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - IWGP INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Katsuyori Shibata
Kazuchika Okada vs. "Machine Gun" Karl Anderson - TOKYO DOME IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE CONTENDERSHIP MATCH

but the NJPW undercard (when they aren't running a tournament) is what it is and they're determined to run more big shows close together. I still think there's more than enough greatness and promising matches there for two shows.

Biosys

That combined card looks so much better than splitting them up but ah well.

There's enough good matches on both shows that I'll watch both but they're definitely not amazing, the only actually bad part is that Suzuki is still in god drat tags vs Yano.

Also, is the Tacos/Takahashi match for the NEVER title or?

That would be fair if he wasn't flown in for every tour besides BOSJ, but he has been. I know it was more commonplace in the past for titles to be sporadically defended, but I admit I'm a fairly recent fan who started watching in 2012 but it's not like regular defenses are a new thing. According to SSS it's been defended virtually every non tourney month this decade until now.

I could understand cutting down on defenses if Okada was still champ in order to not burn out the list of viable challengers. AJ's going to hold the belt until WK9 at the latest though and there's plenty of guys he could face. We've had a new champ since early May and it's dumb IMO that he hasn't defended the belt against anyone besides the guy he won it from.

Other than that and the continued misuse of MiSu they look like perfectly fine NJPW B-shows to me. They won't be cards of the year or anything but they'll be fun. I'd perfectly happy if AJ just defended against Naito or somebody on the second show.

Only surprise to me is how comparatively low Shibata ranked considering he had 4 outstanding matches.

The biggest failing of star ratings is the emphasis on match length, pretty much nobody would say Yano had a worse performance in the G1 than Gallows.

Hey, I recently got into New Japan with the few events going into and including G1, and am probably looking forward to their ongoings far more than what is happening in WWE. However, I think it would be cool if you linked this in the OP: http://uproxx.com/prowrestling/2014/07/get-into-this-an-introduction-to-new-japan-pro-wrestling-that-thing-everybody-likes-part-1/

I found it real useful, because I knew jack poo poo about anybody except for the fact that the guy with the undercut was cool and that Okada is their top guy. Now I know enough to get by. Real useful link, thanks to whoever posted it in the questions or podcast thread. Should help people get into it, I know it did for me.

New Japan is seriously looking into doing the 1/4 show at the Tokyo Dome as a regular PPV show in North America. If so, the working idea would be to use high-profile English language announcers.
Now this would be great. They must be confident about business and really serious about international expansion if they're even considering it.

Not sure if it's a smart move for them since reaching casual fans is going to be extraordinarily difficult especially at that timeslot and the majority of people who care don't mind listening to Japanese commentary. Still, it shows that they still value foreign viewers which is of course good for us. They're certainly not going to leave us without a way to watch PPVs like I was thinking a couple months ago after getting a pessimistic sounding tweet from Dave.

Good Old JR? He has plugged the idea of him doing an one-time announcing gig for NJPW numerous times on the Ross Report podcast. That idea also included the notion of having CM Punk as his partner, though.

There is JR for the right price, but also I'm sure there is uh Matt Striker. Wonder if Josh Matthews is down for it.

If he's willing and able, and he actually gets Punk (or somebody with name recognition who has some knowledge), that'd be great.

To steal an old joke from DVDVR, can't wait to hear JR talk up Ishii's football background at Hokkaido Tech.

I doubt Punk would do it, but JR's definitely available for the right price. I whoever hope his partner is has some knowledge of the product and the language. I like the Japanese commentary but I wouldn't mind a guy who could give quick rundowns of promos.

That'd be a very small list in the language department. The only gaijin I know of who made an effort to learn Japanese are Pee Wee Moore (ECW ref who also worked FMW), Stan Hansen (I imagine it'd be functional considering he lives in Japan), and Chris Jericho knows some limited Japanese.

They could always have a 3 man team with a play-by-play-guy, color/analyst and an interpreter for the promos.

Regarding the language thing, I'm assuming there's no way the English-language PPV would air live in the US considering it starts at about 1am EST. I have to imagine they'd hold it for the traditional wrestling PPV slot, which would give the announcers plenty of time to study translations of promos and such.

An an "out there" suggestion, if TNA is dead/he's not on a formal contract, why not MVP? He's obviously well versed in the product and his G-1 video a while back was very good.

Dunbar

You really could do a lot worse than having JR and MVP call that show. I also wonder if they'd try to edit out some of the less important matches since a 5-6 hour wrestling PPV is unheard of over here.

Will Kurt Angle be available by that point? If they're serious about this booking him in a high-profile match would be a strong draw for American fans unfamiliar with their product.
