FactsAreUseless posted:It's because some of the soundtrack was done by Yasunori Mitsuda. I don't know which tracks, though. But Deep in Coma is one of my all-time favorites in any game. I remember all the Rasputin songs being incredibly good and was really disappointed that they didn't keep him around as the villain for the entire game almost solely because of that.

FactsAreUseless posted:The villain of the second half is extremely good though. He was, I think I was just getting a little fatigued from playing through two long (albeit extremely awesome) plots at the end. I should replay that game some day, it's probably one of the few older JRPGs I would still have the patience to play just because of how drat charming it was. Follin was a genuine wizard. See his stuff for the original 48k Spectrum, which, uh, didn't really have a sound chip at all.

I love me some Video Games music! Nobuo Uematsu is a certain brand of brilliant that I could talk about for hours on end, but I feel like the boss track from FFVII is among his best pieces of work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnGnJWKyBak I was really disappointed when I heard Uematsu wasn't doing the music for the FFVII remake, because I'd love to hear this track without the limitations of the PS1. It still is a fantastically technical track. It could be a study in modern counterpoint. While we are on the subject of Uematsu, it can also not go under-stated how much he was able to get out of SNES sound chip. There is so much detail in the tracks he worked on and the use of subtle motives works in ways that makes every track within a set of tracks seem familiar even if you've only heard some of them. Among the most obvious example is his use of the Augmented 4th interval in a lot of his battle music. It shows up super subtlely in the Boss Fight, it's prominent in the Fiends fight, and is super core to the Zeromous fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJe5v5lLKk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B08Nhzrp41c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSUgvs0UK50 There is so much detail in the FFIV tracks -- I love them! It just turned 20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J67nkzoJ_2M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6NpliDiLTE David Wise also redid Stickerbrush Symphony for DKC Returns. It's really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SLOGs9ttiE There's also the version of the track in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which also is amazingly good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJkVwt_JJXo
