Cast of Characters

Alessa, the Half-elf Druid (Anomalous Amalgam) -- sworn to uphold balance, imbued with the power of primal beasts
Slayn, the Assassin (slap me and kiss me) -- murderer for hire, member of a shadowyscuzzy guild
Jozan, the Human Cleric (Look Around You) -- divine spellcaster, healer and undead-hunter
Vladimir, the Human Paladin (Ominous Jazz) -- aged veteran, a devout but pragmatic warrior
Rae, the Elven Swordmage (Generic Octopus) -- ex-knight of a prestigious order, gifted in magic

Introduction

In the wake of a coup against the royal family of Yllise, many people have found themselves displaced; simply put, you are one of these people.
You each have your own reasons for it, but whatever the case may be, you are aboard (or alongside) one of the many landships shuttling people and materials away from the chaos.

This is effectively an Exploration encounter, for now. Describe what your character would be doing:
Would you be on the deck of the ship?
Would you be on the ground, either in front of the ship or at its side?
Are you /with/ the convoy, or would you be following or shadowing it?

Based on your choice, I may ask you to make a skill check.
You can also feel free to talk among each other (assuming you're in close enough proximity) in-character.

Slayn, angry at his rest being disturbed, hikes himself up and scowls out at the source of his consternation. Reaching into the folds of his ragged tunic, he fumbles free a rusty blade, and with a lurching throw, heaves it towards the monsters emerging from the woods.

Targeting Monster x1, advantage from having the high ground results in a 20 on the attack roll, inflicting 36 damage (10 + critical damage of 26). 41 damage (9 points from the d20, 6 points from the d6 due to expertise, and additional critical damage of 26).

Monster[1] is thoroughly Bloodied; one modest hit should finish it off.

Because Slayn was using a Basic Attack, he had Expertise on both the attack and damage rolls, thus the 1 on the attack is treated as a 20 (critical success) and the 1 on the d6 of damage is treated as a 6; the critical does the maximum damage of the successful attack (26) in addition to the roll, for a total of [6 + 9 + 26 = 41]

(the extra d20 of damage comes from a class Ability, when targeting an unengaged enemy)

Your summons can act (Move & Standard) on the same turn you summon them; 1HD minions deal 1pt of damage without needing any rolls, so you can auto-kill some of their minions with yours, if you'd like.

Since you can pick the Form as part of your initiative, summoning would just use the Minor action; :siren: Alessa still has a Move action and Standard Action.

Forgot the Spellbinding Sorcery: 3

After purging the smaller spiders with a sweep of her blade and the heat of an emerald flame, Rae readied a stance to counter the vengeance of the remaining monstrosities.

Counter-Attacking both of those; pretty sure Spider 3 gets me unless I missed having expertise on defense rolls somewhere (1 one the d20, stack of 8 on the Counter for Beguiling Blade), but not sure if the Counter penalty applies to Beguiling Blade's Swordmage effect (11 stacked, 5 and 6 on the dice).

No expertise for you!

So yeah, basically the Swordmage gets to roll the normal d20 for defense, plus 2d12 (if they counter-attack) and use either as their defense value; if both results are less than 10, you're kinda hooped, and (RAW) you'd subtract the lower of the d12 rolls for the counter-attack

Looking at it, really it should just read "when you counter-attack, you can use the higher of the trade-off rolls in place of the d20 roll for your defense" since that's really the end result anyway.

The monstrous spiders both sink their fangs into Rae, and they begin to wrap their webbing around the staunch defender.

Alright, so Blackguard gets Expertise on this "ability" when all 3 attacks are made against the same enemy; it may not be entirely clear, but this means on the attack and damage.
Thus, the 3rd attack does 3 damage, since you rolled [1,3] and get to treat the 1 as a 10, but still use the lower result.

Also, if all 3 attacks are successful, the Blackguard deals an extra Class Die of damage: 7 damage

You're getting chocolate in my peanut buttermish-mashing subclasses and forms all over the place, so lemme fix this up a bit.

[ruleslawyer]
When you roll initiative, Druid gets to pick a subclass (Summoner or Shapeshifter) and that is what you are, for that whole encounter.
You also get to pick a Form (Dire Bear, Stalking Cat, or Great Eagle) as part of your initiative, but you can also switch later as a Minor action; if you choose Shapeshifter, you can also Wildshape as part of the initiative check, whereas Summoner basically picks the form of their animal companion at initiative, and then you actually summon them once it's your turn.

The +1d4 to attack is a Stalking Cat feature, but you turned into a Dire Bear, but that's ok because you hit anyway.
[/ruleslawyer]

When you wildshape into Bear form, your maximum HP increases by 8, and you "heal" for 3+1=4, so your HP will be at 28/32

Alright, so it looks like we're back to Exploration.

Generally you'll be looking at using these skillsets (since we're outdoors):
  • STR (Run, Climb)
  • AGIL (Jump, Stealth)
  • Detection (Investigate, Perception)

So you might be running ahead of the convoy as an advance scout, climbing/jumping through the trees lining the road to get a higher viewpoint, hiding in the underbrush to counter any ambushes you may encounter, investigating the trail or nearby paths/tracks, or just keeping your eyes and ears open.

If you're pretty sure of which skill you'd be using, go ahead and roll it; otherwise, describe your course of action and I'll adjudicate which skill would be appropriate.

Generally speaking, when a skill check is unsuccessful, your options are to use another skill (because I don't want people spamming a thing over and over until it works) or, uh... have someone else use another skill.

You don't have a ton of plausible alternate skills in this kind of scenario (unless you want to try wrasslin' it, I guess) so in this instance I'll allow another party member to try Animal Handling.
Since we essentially want to be going "around the table" and having everyone make a check before anyone takes a 2nd, Alessa or Vlad can take a shot at it, or use other skills, as they see fit.
