I'm drowning in analysis paralysis after researching network attached storage. help me, yospos. just tell me what's good. I know there's a nas thread in SHSC but lol at digging through three hundred pages of sperging. I want a home nas. I want it to do exactly one thing: store files over the network. I want it quiet. I want it to have at least mirrored disks for redundancy, so at least two. and it obviously has to work with macs. I don't want some poo poo Linux virtualization BitTorrent iTunes transcoding server with hdmi. I don't want to ever janitor it. I don't want to access it over the internet. it doesn't have to be fast, it's just going to hold my extensive collection of tentacle porn and family photos. what should I get? I don't even care about money, I just want it to work and not have to gently caress with it.

synology is probably your best bet. they can do all sorts of poo poo besides serving files locally but all of that can be completely ignored and left alone i guess. i've got one and it was braindead simple to set up and i haven't had to gently caress with it at all really. there's probably dumber/simpler/cheaper devices out there that could do what you want but probably with poo poo performance, dubious software quality, questionable security, and poor support.

I have a synology 416 with 3 4tb drives it is very knees suiting

apparently you can run the crash plan engine on a few of the synology boxes to target it as a computer to computer backup source and then have that push to ~ThE cLoUd~ instead of having to run all that traffic locally. it's a bit onerous to set up and I haven't bothered yet due to sloth.

I like my Synology NAS as well, it has corrupted a couple disks but I haven't figured out if that's widespread or just me... I think maybe I should be mirroring the data to avoid losing stuff but 🤷🏼♂️
