If you don't have insurance, the hospital may negotiate with you and you may be able to pay much less than that. I knew someone who got billed 17K for a MRI and they knocked it down to a few hundred dollars.

My dad had a medivac, two brain surgeries, a couple weeks in the hospital and a stint in rehab and they STILL haven't told me what it cost so I'm pretty sure that they sold me into white slavery and the buyer still hasn't picked me up.

I have a friend who got charged an astronomical price for a three hour stay, they negotiated down to something feasible but it's more accurate to say they vocally, adamantly refused to pay the hyper inflated initial price.

Imagine thinking that $61000 is in any way reflective of the cost/time/expense/effort of any of this and is therefore a justifiable number to charge anyone, and is not just the result of a ridiculously inefficient system and a lot of people well disconnected from the actual provision of day-to-day medical care lining their pockets. Even if it was reflective of the time/cost/etc. it should be paid from a central risk pool that everyone is in because that's the most logical and sane thing to do when you separate out all the ideology from it. Like, mathematically and poo poo.

Talk to the hospital and explain that you can't pay it. The billing services people usually have very wide latitude in forgiving bills in the name of charity. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get that down to < 10K
