EXCEED CHARGE

The briefing room is well lit, you've been here a half dozens time before throughout your training. There was only a small group of you this time, you had been pulled from your normal training groups. The rumor going around was that they were grabbing the most flight ready of the trainees for accelerated assignment to active duty. Rumor traveled fast on the station, probably because it was pretty well off the beaten path and holonet access was restricted to prevent Imperial detection. Combined with a sense of shared purpose, this meant that the community was pretty tight here, though the station was big enough and you were knew enough that you were still pretty new.. However, you were still new enough and your training had been time consuming enough that you didn't know everyone too well yet.

The briefing officer coughs to get your attention, and then hits a button on the controls in front of him, the holo projector springs to life and the briefing gets started.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dq3PeMwkPg

Once the briefing is over, the holograph fades, and the briefing officer gives you a few minutes to introduce yourself to your new impromptu squad mates before you are expected in the hanger.

Time to get acquainted prior to departing on your first mission. Please put your PC's name in bold at the top of each post for clarity's sake.

Variables regarding flight inexperience, unknown squadmates, and likelihood of enemy contact during flight mission provide INACCURATE RESULTS FOR DATA PREDICTION.

RECOMMENDATION: Retreat to base if hostile contact is encountered. Likelihood of afterlife UNDER 8% with ~4% variance based on species/religion matrix."

B5-LY takes a few seconds looking each of his new potential squadmates in turn, and his photoreceptors flicker briefly at each of you, almost as if he is coldly examining you and committing every minutia of detail to memory. Which he is.

After a few moments, B5 continues;

"I am known as Crevette. Geante Crevette." Crevette smiled at Vraska in appreciation for his support, in as much as his bulbous head allowed such an expression. Vraska could also have been saying fighting unnecessarily was a good way to die, but Crevette preferred to assume at least one of his squadmates was as eager to get some revenge as he was. He held out his suckered palm to shake hands. "Pleased to meet you."

"If you're only interest is survival, I'm surprised to see you in the Rebellion B5-LY. Most people don't think much of our odds. I certainly don't think much of them, but there's more to life than simply surviving."

After introductions are complete, you make your way to the hanger.

The deck officer directs each of you to your fighters. The Z-95's are fully fueled and armed, ready for launch. The techs give you a quick brief on the fighter's load-outs. Besides the two blaster cannons these Headhunters carried one set of Assault Missiles, a fairly standard armament. Pre-flight checklists went smoothly, and soon you were clear if the station.

You maneuvered your way to the predetermined hyperspace point and jumped to light speed. As you return to normal space a short time later, alarms start to blare as sensor readings indicate you've jumped out of hyperspace in range of a flight of tie fighters.

Aran and B5 manage to escape the remains of the Imperial patrol and hyper back to the Rebel base undetected. While B5 manages to make it back largely unscathed, the damage Aran suffered forces an emergency landing. Thankfully the base’s tractor beams means he manages to get the Z-95 or what’s left of it back to base in mostly one piece. Crevante and Vraska weren’t so lucky and are forced to wait still spinning in space in their ejection seats until the SAR team manages to arrive.

You had expected to hear back from your Commander, or maybe even the Captain in charge of fighter operations. However, once all four members of the squadron had been assembled in once place you are escorted to the office of Commodore Mavr, the man in charge of this entire base. The office was at the very top of the station, it was large but relatively spartan with a few personal effects here and there and a large quantity of mostly organized data chips assembled in various piles across his large desk.

You were lined at attention, and Commodore Mavr spoke, his voice quiet but hard. “Perhaps one of you can enlighten me as to what exactly you thought you were doing out there?”

"MISSION SUMMARY: Enemy contact upon exit from hyperspace. Unable to disengage from combat and retreat before enemy assets were in firing range. Odds of successful escape without casualty UNDER 15.6%."

B5 almost seems to stand up straighter somehow, as he continues.

"Enemy formation consisted of 4 TIE fighter class ships in close formation. With equipped ASSAULT MISSILES chances of successful salvo against enemy assets resulting in loss of
minimum 50% combat strength estimated at 74% with 5% variable. Engaging first wave resulted in higher chance of survival and sub goal of destroying enemy assets.

Resulting combat exceeded combat expectations, enemy assets were destroyed with minimal shield damage to friendlies. Squadron attempted regroup to continue patrol."

A slight hesitation before B5 continues

"Additional enemy contacts emerged within firing range. Friendly assets broke formation to split enemy fire, increasing chances of survival and opportunities for covering fire in accordance with Rebellion Flight Combat Protocol SECTION 5 PARAGRAPH 3 SUBSECTION 5.C . Friendly assets were fired upon, resulting in heavy damage to squadmates and loss of friendly assets.

Providing cover fire for friendly assets resulted in elimination of two additional enemy assets, raising odds of succseful retreat from 24.5% to 85.7%. Destruction of additional enemy contacts resulted in enemy retreat, allowing SARS retrieval of downed squadmates VRASKA and CREVETTE.

SORTIE RESULTS: Enemy loss of 6 TIE fighter class ships, 6 pilots. Friendly loss of 2 Z-95 Headhunter class ships, zero casualties. Opportunity for SARS retrieval of downed enemy pilots for interrogation possible as well. "

B5 goes silent as he waits for a response from Commadore Mavr or his squadmates.

We are not the Empire, we don't have a nearly unlimited supply supply of ships, armaments, and pilots.  If this devolves to a war of attrition we lose. We need to carefully husband the few resources we so have so that we can use them to advance our strategic objectives when opportunities present themselves.  Engaging a random imperial patrol advances our strategy not at all, any losses suffered for it, much less half of your flight was too high a price. That was why your orders clearly specified you were not to engage enemy patrols.”

He looks each of you in the eyes, “By all rights I should ground the lot of you.  However, as you are no doubt aware we are catastrophically short of pilots, so the realities of the war we're fighting force my hand.  That being said, I want to hear from you here and now that you understand what I'm telling you, and that you won't pull a stunt like this again.  If you just want to kill some imps for your own private vengeance go buy your own damned ship, because your worse than useless to me. On the other hand, if you want to help bring down the whole drat empire, not just sway low level grunts here and there them you better shape up and fly right.  Well?” he looks at you expectantly.

Geante Crevette

In front of a less august personage Crevette's boiling hatred of the Imperials would likely have led him to insist they'd done nothing wrong. Instead, Commodore Mavr's imposing gaze broke through the haze of even Crevette's bloodlust and he started reviewing the past battle in his mind.

"It's all my fault sir.
I joined the Rebellion to get back at the Imperials who enslaved my planet and encouraged the others to attack.
During our initial engagement I did not consider the possibility of a second squadron of eyeballs and so fired my missiles. I should have held them in reserve.
During the first pass against the second squadron of eyeballs I targeted the closest eyeball even though he'd already begun turning away and so failed to shoot at the Ties that seconds later destroyed Vraska's Z-95.
During the ensuing dogfight I allowed myself to be targeted by all of the surviving Ties in a single fight because I was so eager to reach optimal firing range. This resulted in serious damage to my Headhunter and the loss of all my shields.
After losing my shields I continued the engagement instead of charging my hyperdrive and returning to base.
Aran Jinn and B5-LY had no choice but to remain and try to protect me.
During the continuing engagement I forced the Z-95 through several maneuvers its thrusters had a hard to performing and failed to take the time to properly recalibrate my lasers before continuing the engagement causing me to miss several vital shots.
Finally, I allowed one of the Ties to maneuver into an excellent firing position and ultimately destroy my Z-95.
I apologize sir. It won't happen again."

Judging from their appearance and high gloss black finishes, these are clearly imperial droids. It seems to be a mix of engineering and maintenance droids for the most part, though off on one shelf there appear to be two or three interrogation droids. A closer inspection reveals them to be damaged or otherwise non-functional. Some of the damage appears to be external, damage from prisoners most likely, others are the results of internal faults due to normal wear and tear or manufacturing defect.

Your ploy just earns you an annoyed stare by the officer. "I don't have time to waste with such games." He gestures to some stormtroopers, and after one of them bashes Vraska with the but of his rifle for good measure, all the pilots are escorted into a large open area. The acrid sent of the smoke you know all too well from your own encounters with electrical fires lingers in the air. The people here are a mix of various species all in similarly colored jump suits. In your orange pilot suits you stick out like a sore thumb A quick check when the imperials aren't looking confirms that the imperials search didn't discover your hidden equipment. You're still shackled however, which will make using it... difficult.

One of the other prisoners walks over to you.

"I take it you're the ones responsible for the general ruckus around here?" she asks with an air of humor.

B5-LY

Interfacing with the droids proved to be a mixed bag. The interrogation droids were downright unpleasant and aggressively uphelpful, attempting to hack you back leaving you no choice but to fry one of them. The maintenance droids were easier prey, but they for the most part didn't have much in the way of information. It would seem that about half of the damaged engineering and maintenance droids had been downed due to the effects of your attack. Apparently the massive fuel tank explosion had set off some secondary explosions within the station itself leaving the staff scrambling to keep things in hand. However, after a few hours of work you manage to hit paydirt. It would seem that one of the engineering droids had been working on the computer systems and there were some logs you could use. It was fairly low level access, but you had a way into their computer system now.

I begin examining the terminal, using the access I retrieved and look at the available options, specifically looking for ways to access doors/security/distractions such as having all maintenance droids spontaneously over mix detergent and have the station flooded with bubbles, and if I happen to run across any data regarding communication logs/personnel, or anything really I can copy and bring back to HQ, I'll nab that too.

Just to keep in character.
