This summer's past I began visiting a web forum I had avoided for almost fifteen years - 4chan.org. What I found was barely useful and fascist-infested. But this thread is not about the politics of the situation. This is about those rare times and spaces where a modicum of moderation and lack of Nazi saturation allowed for a true conversation to blossom, and the fruits of full-anonymous posting lain bear

Lack of Forums Cred - Every user was writing not build credibility, but to genuinely inform and entertain, without ego.

Lack of Coloration - You never knew somebody outed themselves as a dumbass in another thread if you were agreeing with them in this one.

No need to sweat the small stuff - If you make a minor mistake it doesn't really matter; it won't be attached to you by your posting enemies

Honesty - True honesty without reprisal. Always socially dangerous, but again this is about the ideal of the image board

I think traditional pseudonymous forums are irreplaceable but my cultural anthropology makes me wish there was a space for the full-anon imageboard in the landscape. How did a curated implementation never take off?

Yeah but I'm saying what if there was moderation. Pretty sweet, right? In theory?

i dont see the big difference between what we're doing now and full anonymity, but this seems better. i'd probably still make jokes but i'd put less pride into it. whats the point on punching up my bits when no one can recognize you as good at making jokes? for the love of the game, maybe? the thankless task of entertaining the rest of you slack-jawed chucklefucks? NAY.

Getting rid of the whole caste of GBS superstar would be an immediate quantitative improvement to discussions, as much as it would be a cultural loss in other ways

This is why I asked in another thread what was some unbelievably stupid poo poo I could post to get a free shame tag, despite what the gently caress I ended up with. Totally worth it to have a visual identity. This enforcement and encouragement of visual posting is another advantage of the Imageboard form, though one technically orthogonal to my specific point

Just keep posting, eventually somebody will buy you one for reasons that won't be immediately clear. That's how I got mine. Thanks for taking my anonymity!

This case of an intraperitoneal zucchini is unusual, and does raise questions as to how hard one has to push a blunt vegetable to perforate the rectum.
I was a 4chan dumbshit as a teenager. I got better. Mostly.

To be fair, it was before it got super alt-righty and was more anarchist in nature. Still racist though. I remember this one thing where they'd gently caress with recaptchas (because they had been added to the site and people got mad because poo poo's annoying) by figuring out which word was the real one used to match the captcha and which one was the one they wanted translated because a machine couldn't do it. Hilarious idea except that the N-word was chosen because of course it was.

/tg/ is still better than the SA tradgames forum. Sorry but it's true.

I always found complaining about nazis and pejoratives on 4chan to be really out of touch and a massive self own. There's a pretty blatant filter button that solves all your problems. It's not new or hidden or hard to use.

The real problem is the unmedicated schizospectrums taking manic word salad dumps all over the place. Much harder to filter that garbage than the election tourists.

Also I disagree with your assertions. There's plenty of attention-seeking and attempts to build a cult of personality. It's just not as obvious until you learn to read the metanarratives that happen on the site.

I agree, but I haven't seen either used more than once so IDK if it's truly a huge problem.

Oh indeed! And those considerations would not go away no matter how well you moderated. All those strengths are illusory to some great extent.

I think it boils down to how transient posts on an imageboard are. The truly great things are saved and the chaff disappears forever whereas on SA tradgames a lovely dumb overly serious discussion can go for pages and pages and days and days. The lack of permanence of posts on /tg/ keeps things less serious (but still totally serious because nerd poo poo is srsbiz) and bitchfights less lengthy and keeps things on /tg/ more relaxed and casual (like gaming should be) than on SA.

There are some good things to be found here; the fascists in trad gaming thread is amazing (and a clusterfuck), but as far as my D&D fix goes SA is not my first choice. That said, I'd rather actually game with goons than fa/tg/uys because shitheads are pretty actively filtered out on SA.

Don't forget the porn. /b/ is pretty much porn. Its all porn. I wish they would do something about that, because /b/, has done something amazing things in the past, and has been responsible for a lot of memes and interesting dumb poo poo.

(I'm refering to /b/ as I remember it back in 2008 as a teenager, back when they did stuff like prank calls to the Tom Green show, raiding Habbo Hotel, and loving with people on Stickam, which were both immature but still loving hilarious)

I think the lack of rules was both its selling point and its down fall.

Gotcha. So trad poo poo on a more serious board is more likely to be a godamn shitheap of seriousness about dumb fuckin elves and poo poo, but the bad boards are more likely to be a straight up shitheap?
