This game is complicated as hell, and if you are coming at it from a non-grognard games perspective (like me) it can be super overwhelming and Really easy to pick up bad habits that ultimately can ruin a playthrough after you have invested a LOT of time in it. What is Highfleet? Highfleet is gigantic diesel-punk airships duelling over a desert wasteland. Highfleet is high tension games of cat and mouse between thousand ton behemoths. Highfleet is nail biting strategic missile interceptions. Highfleet is desperate airstrikes on unseen targets. Highfleet is corvette crews blacking out as their 700KPH flying gun banks too hard in combat. Highfleet is bankruptcy. Highfleet is angry Russian generals pointing at things you missed, you idiot. Highfleet is WarCrimes. Highfleet is great. I have been hanging around this games Discord and Reddit threads for a few weeks and I have seen a lot of people getting frustrated or missing really important concepts in Highfleet. After helping a lot of people out on the Discord and Reddit, I figured it was worth doing a playthrough to show some of these concepts off. Watch me make a mess of it. To keep things simple this is going to be a Vanilla LP, which means no custom ships (which can totally break the game wide open) and our flagship is going to be the SEVESTAPOL. (I am totally open to playing another campaign down the road with custom ships, they can break the game wiiide open. We will be refitting these vanilla ships as we go) VIDEO LINK - CHAPTER 1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCHO66KtQKc Update 2: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1#post517174124 Update 3: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1#post517239345 Update 4: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=2#post517268071 Update 5: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=2#post517361354 Update 6: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3#post517443471 Update 7: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3#post517491406 Update 8: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3977149&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3#post517505987 So I got the sads here and stopped updating the thread like an rear end in a top hat, but what follows are links to all the videos as I did finish the campaign. The End. Background (copied from Update 8) One of the things that REALLY hooked me on this game, is that it has an actual storyline running through it. And it's interesting. A lot of wargames either replay WW2, or give you a scenario without a huge amount of storytelling around it. This, for me, is something quite different. There is something going on. We don't know a huge amount. What we do know is the world we are on is not Earth, but somewhere called Elaat. It's a supergiant planet, the Gerat region itself has a larger surface area than our entire world. Sometime in the past, possibly a hundred years ago, possibly a thousand years ago The Calamity occurred. The Calamity involved the destruction of Kharu, the MOON. They blew up their moon, or someone blew up their moon. Next time we have a night fight peep the background and you will notice there is no moon sprite in the sky. This isn't an oversight. After Kharu was destroyed, shards of it crashed into Elaat, leaving huge craters and unleashing a massive electromagnetic disturbance destroying 'The minds of the old machines'. Leaving the ancestors of our protagonists in a postapocalyptic desert with no computers. 214 years ago, the Romani Empire was founded, and the heads of the Great Houses chose Duke Sayadi to become the Hereditary Sovereign of the people. They prospered and grew to be the largest nation on Elaat in the time since. 36 years ago, King Elaou-Ali of Gerat, a northern desert region, swore allegiance to Romani Emporer Kerim Shah II in order to win an elusive victory in his war with the Khans. The Romani fleet flew north and wiped out the forces of the Khan's, ending a long-running war and finally bringing long-desired peace to the region. Nearly three decades later, an imperial officer who had risen to become Governor of Khiva, the capital city of the Gerat region, deposed the king and rebelled against the Sayadi dynasty and the Romani Empire. He rallied the Great Houses of the region and formed a republic with them, claiming the Kingdom of Gerat dead. There had long been skirmishing and harsh words between the Sayadi Dynasty and the Great Houses of Gerat before this occurred, and the Imperial Army and Fleet were preparing for a major conflict. Nobody expected what happened next, however, as the Gerat Republic ('The Gathering') launched a massive first strike, overwhelming the professional military of the Romani Empire with the sheer number of private forces the Great Houses combined were able to bring to bear on their enemies. The Romani suffered defeat after defeat, and at the start of the game are hanging on by a thread, marshalling their forces near the capital to defend the Emporer and High Command. High Command seized on the opportunity to send a small fleet (that's us) around the enemy in an attempt to cut off their supply lines, as the Gerat forces were overextended. However even as this fleet was victorious in doing so, news reached it of the discovery of a functioning nuclear reactor in Khiva, under the control of The Gathering. There are only two other known functioning reactors, and this discovery greatly distorts the balance of power in Elaat. Possibly because of this discovery, or maybe simply bad timing, The Gathering initiate the next phase in their assualt on the Romani by launching an unexpected and unprecedented nuclear strike against the Romani capital and the primary Romani fleet. Contact with High Command, the Imperial Family and the Romani Fleet are lost, and our smaller fleet is suddenly stranded between the enemy homeland and their fleet, with their own home burning on the other side of the largest fleet ever seen. Our character is the son of the Emporer on their first military assignment. They aren't even in charge of the small fleet they are traveling with but instead have their own small command. When news of the strike reaches them, they realise that heading south to help the survivors is foolish if they wish to win the war, they need to race the Gerat Fleet back to Khiva and take it and the Nuclear Reactor for their own before it can be used to create more WMD. The commanders of the fleet decide to put the last known surviving member of the Sayadi Dynasty in charge, in the hopes that it will lead them to victory. Now that we are traveling in the desert, the people of Gerat whisper our name, prophecies of one who will stand over all are gripped tightly by Doyens across the region, fragments from ancient Holy books lost in The Calamity. Meanwhile, it rains in the desert. Flagship: The SEVESTAPOL is an over engineered, over gunned, over armoured boondoggle of a ship. May I draw your attention to the 6 barrelled 180MM gun turret that can only fire backwards? The top speed of 90KMPH? The thrust to weight ratio of 1? The laughable complement of only 2 strategic cruise missiles? (Nukes of course!). This ship is a fragile heavy baby that we are going to have to escort carefully towards our target. Along the way I will do my best to trim the fat off of this monstrosity and turn it into something useful, or at least get it running at a reasonable speed. Don’t get me wrong, the SEVESTAPOL is a monster in combat. The problem is that it WILL take damage, as it has no choice but to sit there and take all the hits fired at it. Once you finish the fight, you will be staring down the barrel of a considerable repair bill on top of days of sitting in dry dock. And in the deserts of GERAT, sitting still is death. Tactical Fighters: In comparison to the SEVESTAPOL, the LIGHTNING is a fighting ship taken to the absolute limit of pairing down to the essentials. (At least if you are looking at vanilla ships.) 700KPH top speed, a thrust to weight ratio of 14 and 2 double barreled 100mm cannons with full coverage are wrapped up in a respectable operating range of 1240KM with it’s internal fuel tanks. With no armour to speak of this crew of a Lightning have only one option when it comes to surviving combat. Don’t get hit. I love the LIGHTNING, we are going to be using it a lot at the start of this campaign to operate independently of our flagship, take territory, find allies, and scout out enemy strike fleets for strategic strikes.. Support ships: The SKYLARK is our choice of tanker for this campaign, and it’s the sort of ship I can only see being created by some sort of insane procurement exercise. With reasonable speed (590KPH) it can keep up with our Lightnings and refuel them on the move, allowing these two ships to operate together with complete autonomy. Oh and did I mention that this ship carries not one but two passive sensors? It’s MP-404 ELINT dome mounted on top of the chassis can detect enemy radar It also mounts an IRS-1 Mars passive thermal sensor. With a range of 300KM this very specific tool can help hunt down traders and other ships that are flying in the quiet without giving away your own position. The FENEK is another boondoggle, at 999 tons this diminutive AA and missile interception corvette mounts an extremally expensive MR-12 FCR (Fire Control Radar). This FCR not only provides realtime radar display of contacts in a 400KM radius, but allows the FENEK to intercept incoming strategic missiles or fighters with it’s 4 R-9 SPRINT AA missiles. If all else fails the FENEK also boasts two 37mm miniguns capable of laying down several seconds of desperate CWIS at anything that gets too close. If this ship ever sees active tactical combat then we are in dire straits.. Strategic assets: The LONGBOW aircraft carrier is a rare example of a Romani airship with a focussed design. Surprisingly nobody tried to uparmour or add cannons to this chassis and for that I am thankful. It does one thing, and that is carry our small complement of fighters and fighter bombers. Capable of multi-role configurations these small craft give us the ability to reach out and touch distant targets from surprising directions and if we use our SKYLARKS correctly they won’t even know we are coming. It has two T-7 Supersonic Interceptor/Bombers and 4 LA-29 Light turbojet Fighter/Bombers. These planes are capable of mounting rockets, AA missiles and Bombs depending on the mission profiles, and are also armed with 37mm cannons for dogfighting should the need arise. . Finally the YARS Strategic Heavy Corvette is a flying missile battery. It’s complement of two KH-15 conventional cruise missiles may seem laughable, but for it’s low price it matches the SEVESTAPOL’s strategic missile complement (although they are nukes on the SEVESTAPOL). If we can find a safe berth I have plans to extensively refit this ship as one of our primary late game brawlers. Please let me know what you think, and as I can name ships I would love suggestions for what to call our flying battleships! EDIT: Fixed some bad writings. Can’t wait to see you really get rolling! My first introduction to this game was this and immediately I was hooked. Love the fact that you’re breaking down what exactly your thought process is behind each decision; helps me understand more than a simple tutorial. EDIT: Just saw that you can rename ships! If possible, please consider naming one of the Lightning interceptors the Rooster. And then do everything in your power to make sure it stays alive at the end of the game, just so I can quote that Alice In Chains song. It probably wouldn't surprise you that Galactica doesn't come close to some of the monstrosities I have seen! I have already recorded the second bit so I will get to renaming for the third recording. I'll let you pick which Lightning you want to name once I post the next video as there are good reasons to choose a specific one!

The great Microprose revival is bringing some drat interesting things. Also, I'm sorry to be a pest, but a compliment is flattery, we're looking at complements of aircraft and missiles (coming from the root for the verb to complete in latin, IIRC). Just to note, I actually haven't watched other videos/streams of Highfleet (I don't tend to watch non-SA stuff unless I'm really specifically looking for a particular game, and it had not occurred to me to do so with this game) so you do have an audience that's not familiar with it beyond a review or two. I don't feel like anything was confusing really. But I wouldn't mind getting a lil' bit of the story stuff. Otherwise, this seems awesome.

Veloxyll posted:Seeing you use a full on pair of raiders makes me go "Why did I never think of that" It does as indicated by the stat sheet provided. What isn't listed, and might be equally important, is the radar and IR signature for the ship. Each ship has a profile rating for both radar and IR (where IR is based on the heat signature). IR sensors can't be detected like radar, but are usually much shorter in range.

Interestingly the Kh-15 may be the only real world weapon in the list, as an air-to-ground cruise missile that did indeed come in nuclear flavour. Nice of the Russians to leave behind some Cold War-era missiles for the post-Cataclysm to duplicate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaNq92wZ4s Alright, we continue our run of good luck in this video with a couple of new windfalls. Finding a SKYLARK for sale lets us get a third strike fleet on the go. Looting two 130mm cannons lets us up gun a Lightning and then we find a Tarkhan in a WASP, doubling the size of our air force. We are now in a position for me to feel pretty confident about attacking our first Fleet HQ. It is almost too good to be true. I was a little tired when I filmed this, so forgive me for being a little scattered. I have recorded the next hour of campaign and I both make an effort to be more informative.. but poo poo also seriously hits the fan. Fleet Updates: One of our LIGHTNINGS has been refit from two dual 100mm guns to two single 130mm. This give the ship a higher burst damage potential, at the expense of longer reload times, less forgiving fire patterns and reduced combat performance due to the extra weight. The ability to load specialised 130mm ammo is a significant bonus. 130mm AP has superior penetration, 130mm Proximity Fuse is a much larger payload and 130mm Incendiary burns longer and hotter. to this This is actually a very divisive upgrade. There is a lot of argument in the community as to which of these guns is superior, they both have considerable pros and cons. I personally prefer the 100mm, but I can foresee us needing the extra punch in the near future. We also acquired a WASP, which is yet another interesting design from our friends at the Romani Navy Bureau. Being a dedicated aircraft carrier, the smaller size and weight makes it more efficient, which is a welcome sight, they have reduced the armour (why is this ship armoured?) and decreased the size of the internal fuel tank as well. If the LONGBOW is a carrier, then the WASP is a pocket carrier. LONGBOW WASP We also bought a SKYLARK, our third in the fleet and this has given us the ability to create a third independent strike group. Wasp is a lot better than the longbow in a lot of ways, only weakness is it literally cannot defend itself. Longbow has CIWS, wasp only has planes. But wasp does have twice the speed, similar distance at half the fuel use, that actually matters a lot.

Well he skipped the tutorial tutorial, but we are playing as GRAND DUKE Mark Sayadi, the third? son of the Romani Emperor, basically russia Goal is to reach Khiva and seize the reactor there, there are only THREE total reactors in the world so this is a big deal (by reactor they mean an industrial scale reactor) This is not Earth, this is a Superearth class planet named Elaat, also they blew up the moon, which is presumably why no space flight.

Cythereal posted:So... I'm confused. Who are we playing as, and what's even the goal? Is this even Earth? Yeah I didn't expect so much interest! Basically our Illustrious Father sent us Northward to join a campaign to deal with a rebellious region of the desert called Great. The nobles in the area have revolted and banded together under one banner and named themselves The Gathering. Under the command of Admiral Daud, we start taking territory towards Ur, the first major northern city. As a mere Commander, we chafe under the orders of Daud (We are royalty) but the calm and wise advice if General Pyotr (Pointing grizzled Russian man who shows up constantly in gameplay) we successfully take Ur and convince a local prince to aid us financially. We also discover that Pyotr is basically a plant inserted into the fleet by our father to look after us during our first real command. Once we take Ur, and the people are celebrating their liberation, the Sevestapol lands outside the city. Excited to see our father here, obviously having flown here in the new imperial flagship to congratulate us we rush out to greet him. Instead of the Emperor stepping out of the ship however, casualties flood from the doors and we discover to our horror that The Gathering have launched a devastating nuclear first strike at the Imperial capital. There are no communications from the imperial family or navy command and we are stranded in enemy territory. Admiral Daud wants to head south and join in the defense of the Empire, however General Pyotr convinces the rest of the commanders that as the highest ranking member of the Imperial Family they know still exist you should lead the fleet, and you should head north to decapitate The Gathering before they can create more nukes. Turns out Khiva, their capital, has one of only three working nuclear reactors and it is vital we take it from them intact. There is more story as the game goes on, let's just say things aren't as straightforward as they may seem.

Liking the LP so far! I really want to play this game but all the the videos I've seen made it look like it was trying to obscure every screen. There's screen shake, water, dark, bullet holes, static, etc. How much does that effect your gameplaying? Other than that it looks like a game I'd enjoy. I am an immersion junky, so I have all that stuff dialled up to 11, however you can turn a lot of it down in the settings, and there are already mods out to do things like remove the bulletholes and make the aiming reticle more friendly. Some are even goonmade. The Highfleet thread in Games has some of them in the OP and there are more on the unofficial discord. Thanks for the kind words, I really enjoy this game, it's a bit if a gem in my opinion and I really want to share it with people.

Roki B posted:Where is it? Due to an editing issue, this link is temporarily unavailable. So I recorded this with part four back to back. And the tension really rises as the videos play out. I'll get part four out soon, which has us prepare to ambush our first strike fleet. t was repairs, not fuel that Piotr was telling you about. Also your ending cut mid-battle which doesn't seem intentional

Alright, the third video is back up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44yFd44RavY The original video cut off early, however, this is the correct edit. The reason for the abrupt ending is because I lost track of time while recording this, you could say I got immersed. I ended up with a one-hour recording rather than a 30 minute one. In the interest of people's time, I have split it into two videos with part 5 being the second half of this recording session. I have gone ahead and recorded the next hour or so of gameplay and I can confirm that we have engaged our first Strike Group! I will also be switching to post commentary so I can be a little more relaxed, as this game really draws me in. It's hard to describe just how immersive I find it. Thanks for sticking with me through these technical issues, and I promise things pick up from here! This is SARMA Attack Heavy Corvette - it's the first 'Heavy' ship we have seen when hitting a Garrison and is a sign that we are moving out of the early game. This ship is not particularly threatening on the surface, however, it carries 4xZenith Heat Seeking Missiles as well as 3 double-barrelled 57mm cannons. Additionally, it has heavy armor plating covering the top, bottom and sides of the chassis, protecting it completely from 37mm and 57mm fire and heavily resisting higher caliber shots. This configuration makes it a LIGHTNING killer. Because the LIGHTNING has no armor, the 57mm can tear through its structure very quickly. The ship also lacks padding, meaning shots that do hit will cause critical damage very quickly. 57mm reloads quickly, is pretty accurate and also has a high projectile velocity making it quite hard to dodge. When backed up by other ships with larger guns, this can prove a very hard time for a LIGHTNING crew to deal with. Let's talk about how your LIGHTNING can beat a SARMA. We have already discussed how the SARMA is heavily armored on the top, sides, and underneath near the two side 57mm guns. The grey plating is indicative of armored sections of the ship, yellow components are unarmoured. I have indicated the SARMA's Achillies heel in the picture above. The middle 57mm gun is completely exposed, and right above it is the ship's bridge. Getting underneath this ship and firing up into the centre will quickly defang it, and abruptly destroy it once the bridge is gone. Firing anywhere else on this ship is mostly a waste of time as it is carrying excessive armor for such a small ship. This is an INTREPID. It is another Attack Heavy Corvette. Like the SARNA, it is armored. It is also very compact, making it a harder target to hit. The armor on the sides is respectable and makes firing on these locations unattractive unless very high caliber artillery is used (180mm is probably fine). It carries 2x Zenith heat seekers and 2x 130mm cannons, which give it a very nasty bite. It has two significant weaknesses, however. I know it is hard to see in the grainy image, but the INTREPID has 4 unprotected fuel tanks in its undercarriage (the grey capsules mounted there). Shots from below will ignite these, and as it only has two fire suppression systems (the red capsules - one is mounted on top of the ship if you can't find it), repeated shots will cause a fuel fire that will eventually destroy the ship in a fuel explosion. Alternatively, shots directly from above will quickly destroy the bridge which is mounted in a ludicrous position, instantly killing the ship. The designers have attempted to account for this weakness, and installed two angled armor pieces on either side of this gap, to prevent shots from hitting the top from a ~45-degree angle. This is why AP ammo is so good because AP rounds will penetrate these armor spurs and negate their protection, resulting in a quick kill. Most of the enemy designs all have flaws like this, and capitalizing on them is crucial to defeating the enemy when you are outnumbered, outgunned, outarmored and outsupplied.
