But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.
“Lackwits! Halfwands! Maginards! Good gods, why are you just sitting around!? Can't you sense there's been an Arcane- Whoopsy!”

With those immortal words, your Headmaster was blasted into ash by a pulse of chaotic energy. You and the rest of your College fled into the night as Alabaster Hall was pulled deeper and deeper into a crackling rent in space. And now the rent is growing larger and larger, and the people of the surrounding towns are looking pointedly at you to do something about it, drat it.

One problem - your grimoires were in there. And your, well, your teachers. And your clothes and money? But these friendly, welcoming people are growing less friendly and less welcoming as you wear out your welcome and the chaotic infection of the Arcane Whoopsy spreads further towards them. You guess it’s time to make a…

~*WIZARDS’ LAST STAND*~

WHAT posted:

It’s a blackjack joke. Because you stand in blackjack, you see? And in this game you use blackjack mechanics to... Anyhow. So yes, there’s a spreading disaster slowly growing from the ruins of your former school, and only you can do anything about it. Probably. There’s actually a good chance that you can’t fix this by yourselves? There’s just a much larger chance that if no one tries to stop it it’ll spread faster than you can run away… so.

The central gameplay loop is pretty simple. Move to a spot on the GAME GRID above and pick an adjacent square to attack. Initially, you won’t know what’s in them, but as you go on you’ll start to learn about the enemies and trials of this place. Next, roll 1d6. The enemy will do the same against all of you at the same time when I update, then it’s back to you. You want to hit a total of 12 (or as close as you can without going over), and the enemy wants to do the same - but lower level opponents must stand at lower numbers. When both combatants stand, we’ll calculate the difference between your final scores, and the winner will strike the loser that many times, dealing damage according to their Might. If you bust, you Overload, taking critical strikes equal to the magnitude of difference between your previous values +1. Don’t Overload!

Example of Play posted:

You roll 6 vs Baddie A, bringing your total to 6.
Jambo rolls 2 vs Baddie B, bringing their total to 2.
Zonk rolls 1 vs Baddie C, bringing their total to 1.
I update, Baddie A rolls 2 (2), Baddie B rolls 5 (5), Baddie C rolls 5 (5).

You roll 5 vs. Baddie A (11 vs. 2). You stand.
Jambo rolls 4 vs. Baddie B (6 vs. 5)
Zonk rolls 6 vs. Baddie C (7 vs. 5)

I update, Baddie A rolls 4, then 2, and must stand. Your round ends. They stand at 11 vs. 8 - you strike them 3 times at 2 Might each time for 6 Damage.
The others keep fighting their battles at their own pace, but you can start another round of combat against that opponent - or move away and attack another.

When you beat them (or in random events) you might gain a Spell, a powerful item that allows you to play with those mechanics a bit. You are, however, not very good at this whole magic thing - when you use a Spell, it's then on cooldown for three turns! You should have studied better!

One more thing: when you roll a 12 exactly, you have an Epiphany, gaining 1 Inspiration. Every four updates there is an Oscillation, where the whole team can collectively vote on how to spend their Inspiration to bolster their forces. At the same time, the forces of chaos will make their counterattack! But hey, worry about that later!

WHO posted:

Character creation is easy enough: You are a CRAPPY STUDENT WIZARD. You have a NAME. You have 10 HP. Your MIGHT is 1D2 because SOME of you are slightly LESS CRAPPY. You have an ELEMENT (Pyra, Hydro, Terra, Aero). Your attacks deal damage according to your Element, dealing 1 more damage per strike to a vulnerable enemy and 1 less damage to a resistant enemy.

Now, once you have your character, to get started: Pick an Unknown square to attack and roll 1d6. That will reveal the enemy in the square and provoke them to roll against you in the next update. You cannot leave combat until the round is done (until both of you stand), so keep going.

You can only attack orthagonally, so only 11 people can get in right now - but if you want to join anyhow you can help by shoring up the defenses on one of the green squares on the map. To do so, roll 1d6+Might vs the listed value - if you beat it, it increases by 1. Yes, that's really easy. Yes, it will get harder.

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.
So… yeah. The Wizards (such as they were) considered the matter of the Remains of Alabaster Hall. It wasn’t so much a gothic castle estate anymore as the outline of a gothic castle estate, pressed into the sky like a shape punched out of paper. And beyond the outline… madness. Sparkles, mostly. Crazy patterns. Really exciting stuff if you were were a dumb artist who made their living with things like really neato colour gradients - really awful stuff if you had a smidgen of magical talent. Which, (un)fortunately, rather neatly described you lot.

Most teachers hadn’t made their way out, and those who had had… succumbed in their own way. There was your old Herbology teacher right over there down the mountain path - rooted to the naked stone, a twenty foot tall iron tree constantly screaming like a pipe organ. So the Wizards had to make do with Wumpo, the Hall Monitor, who was just as useless in many respects as the name implied. What he HAD brought with him was his Monitoreum, a sort of arcane tablet that the various Hall Monitors had used to communicate. Between your noggins, you’d managed to figure out a way to disconnect the various… unfortunates who were still responding. Wumpo had protested, but Jimmy had burped on him and that was the end of that.

The Monitoreum, you figured, could work in a pinch to act as a sort of long-distance Arcane Circle, allowing you to share knowledge and communicate from a distance. As long as you left the book here in town in the Inn (well guarded by the stout Innkeeper who refused to let you leave anyhow without paying or indeed at all ever until the Whoopsy was resolved) it SHOULD work.

THE MONITOREUM posted:

The Monitoreum can be found here, It contains a lot of heavy details on game mechanics, combat archives, spell and enemy types, and whatnot. For the most part you won’t NEED to look at it because most relevant stuff will be posted in the updates, but it’s pretty handy as a resource, and it will be linked in every post along with the updated map. Imagine that it’s a big old moldy book full of magically animated pages, ooh, ah.
That done, the Wizards made their way towards the Remains of the Hall. These first few forays would be instructive… time to be brave, Wizards! Or at least, not cowardly!

That last one was going to be a hell of an in-joke if any of them survived this, which wasn’t at all clear yet. Hall Monitor Wumpo was awake back at the Inn, apparently, so the link said. The reserves waiting back in town relayed a truly awkward story of how the man had tried to steal his precious book back from the innkeeper, who had promptly slapped him hard enough to make him cry. Success, if a minute one. After extended struggle, Jimmy had managed to force some of his battle gas into the bottle, partially curdling the contents with the sheer power of his vileness. But it was not a very fruitful affair.

His gaze slithered about, leaving a slimy trail of cognizance over everyone it passed, until his eyes locked on Gimlet. Poor Gimlet who was about to die because he could not control his burps.

Jimmy snorted. The fool deserved it for letting such a source of power go to waste.

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.
Things were getting a little dicey out there, but the Wizards were holding their own. So far. The little bit of the fighting, the bursts of sparks and explosions and whatnot, were visible from the village, and people stood outside watching. They muttered among themselves, some prayed, some clutched children to their breasts and watched, others just stared and drank. Not much that they could do, at this point, and those few foolhardy enough to flee the village had already done so. No, may as well sit and watch the lights in the distance and try to ignore that they seemed to be coming closer!

That one little page had to shoot out and slice Adila's cheek! Awful! Truly, this catastrophe was horrible! She'd have to wear a band-aid and it would TARNISH the BEAUTY of the GOLDLINE CLAN!

But the book was dead. Adila moved the golden statue away and began to absorb the ambient chaotic magical energy.

Aero was a weak and transient element. Adila had no use for it. So she focused on the general, neutral energies instead.

Neutral Spell Gain: 1d10 4

4 on the Neutral table means I get Boost +2.

A little lacking, but still useful as a way to gain a bit more energy without risk.

Now that the area had been surveyed, Adila knew where here talents would be used best: Pounding pesky possessed potions.

"Ugly smelling wizard whose name I don't care about! I will take on your putrescent place! Go away! You smell. But grant your gaze to the glorious golden girl who will defeat this vile vial!"

Moving to Bob's spot, E8

The bravely boisterous mage Benny Twinkletoes quickly wiped at his nose with his thumb as he hopped from foot to foot with his dukes up. He made a couple jabs at the air and proceeded to taunt the flying fire hazard threatening his space.

"Y'now what my moms used ta say ta me? She used ta say, 'Eyy, I'm tryna cook a you dinner, so don'chou gimme no heart attack playin' wit fiyuh.' Heh - if only she could see me now!"

The animated lantern responded to this japery by causing its oil to bubble over and its metal pieces to grow red hot.

"Eyy, I'm casting heyah~!" Benny shouted at the filthy rich girl Adila Goldline, who'd gotten between him and the airborne flame elemental. "So watch it, toots!"

The animated lantern lunged for Benny as soon as he looked away at the passing Adila.

Jimmy didn't pay particular attention to the fussy girl who was accosting him. Instead, he let out a loose, wet fart, suffusing the area with protective qualities but also rendering it quite unpleasant to hang out in.

With a gross, guffawing laugh, he walked over to Gimlet's corpse, kicked it aside, and started to taint the Pillar of Salt by summoning a whirlwind of greenish-brown hue around it.
