You do not know the extent of my appetite, goon. I'll not have my fill of revenge until this thread is a graveyard. Until they have felt, as I did, the kiss of fire on their soft bare flesh. All of them. Have patience my friends. Surely, after all these years, I'm entitled to a few small amusements. Do you know how a spook-a-doodle is trained, my dear? Her eyes are sewn open. Blinded temporarily, she suffers the whims of her Mod patiently, until her will is submerged and she learns to serve - as your Mod taught and blinded you with horror movies. The Three Mandatory Rules Watch a movie appropriate to the challenge* Write a review Don't be a dick. THE CHALLENGE BEGINS ON SEPTEMBER 30th, @ 12PM EST in honor of the Midnight Society. You can only log movies you watched after this time. THE CHALLENGE ENDS ON NOVEMBER 1ST, @ 1PM EST You will have to have logged your final movie at this point. Final remarks and totals can be posted after 1PM, but new movies to add to your total will not be counted. Personal Goals & Challenges The most common goal among participants is 31 movies, but there is no mandatory amount of films. You can participate with as much or as little enthusiasm as you want. You can watch as many movies as possible. (We've had people literally watch over a hundred films every challenge.) You can keep it casual and just watch what your schedule allows. However, people that meet the 31 film goal are eligible for some prizes. You can create any personal goals for yourself. Many use the challenge to watch films that are new-to-them. You can catch up on movies that have been released through-out the year, you can make this an excuse to finally watch that classic horror movie. You can use the challenge to watch all the films of a horror director, or an entire horror series you've been interested. You can concentrate on specific sub-genres like Creature Features or Giallos or Hammer-produced films. You can watch films that are only new to you, or only rewatches. You can always ask for a wildcard or recommendations, as well. The possibilities are endless. The only requirement is to watch a horror movie and then write about it. You can write a review, a list of thoughts you had while watching it, an analysis, essay or interpretation. You can post GIFs, screen grabs, illustrations. The whole intention of this thread is to share what we're watching and our thoughts about it. The bitter truth: Watching the movies is the easy part. It's finding something to say about them that gets difficult. That's why it's a challenge! What Movies Can I Watch? movies, for the sake of this challenge, are considered anything longer than 60 minutes Horror Movies Thrillers Horror Comedies (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) Horror Musicals (Rocky Horror, Phantom of the Paradise) Movies Set During or Around Halloween (Hocus Pocus, The Guest) Documentaries - about Halloween (The American Scream) - about the supernatural - about the horror genre (Horror Noire) - about horror movies (Never Sleep Again) -about a subject that is justifiably horror-related (The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, Cropsey) Family Friendly movies that meet the above requirements (Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein) (If you have questions about whether or not a movie counts, feel free to ask me.) What DOESN'T Count TV Shows (This is CineD, not TVIV) mini-series Masters of Horror or Fear Itself episodes MST3k episodes (the movies are abridged) Pornography (it hasn't happened yet, but I swear, someone's gonna try and watch Edward Penishands for this) These is always a grey area that creates a lot of debates of what's considered "fair", and it gets exhausting trying to pick and choose what is allowed for the challenge. Mini-series are becoming more popular on streaming services, and it complicates the challenge. A single episode/chapter of a mini-series may be as long as a feature-length film, but because it's really a part of a whole, there will be some who want to count individual parts as single entries (boosting their watch numbers) and others who consider the whole thing a single entry. It's a little unfair for someone to watch a 45 minute episode of Masters of Horror and it counts the same as Brand New Cherry Flavor, which takes over 7 hours to watch, or Never Sleep Again, which is a single documentary that is a four hour watch. It also creates the grey area of "Is ____ a show or a anthology mini-series? Technically season 1 is self-contained." Let's just avoid it altogether. Please just watch something else. This is a FILM forum, so just stick with movies for the challenge. There will be the inevitable naysayer who posts "I don't care what the rules say, I'm going to count Netflix's Midnight Mass." Just play nice and watch a movie instead. I probably won't call you out, because I have better things to do, but it will be ignored when it comes to tallying results for surprises, and it may just open you up to punishments. Consider this your warning. There will be secret challenges announced early in the month for those that want to be pushed outside of their comfort zones. If you are working from a Letterboxd list, feel free to share it. There are various discords that have branched from CineD, with a couple of them being horror-centric. I'm not going to post them. If you're in the know, you can ask for invites from people, and hope a PM comes your way. (Don't ask me.) Franchescanado fucked around with this message at 21:41 on Sep 30, 2021 |

Yessssss I'm in for 31 as always, although I guess my long-term personal goal has been to break the 60 movie barrier. I've been over 50 a few times but never seem to be able to get to 60.

I’ll actually participate this year I think. I’ve been consistently watching horror movies for the past two weeks already and and I think I can keep it up. I’m going for 15 minimum but I’ll see if I can’t stretch it out a bit to push it to 31 by staying up late a few nights. ps I like the Price themed OP this year, Fran

Thanks for the kind words, friends! This is gonna be a hard month for me. I've got three of the five weekends in October booked, so I have no idea how many movies I'm going to get through. I always aim for 31 or more, and that gets harder every year. It's gonna be a mix of new-to-me and old classics I haven't rewatched in a few years. My partner knows about this challenge, so part of my challenge will be working in movies she wants to watch or revisit, movies she hasn't seen but I have, and then ones that'll be new to both of us. I have to save the more disturbing, gory, horrific films for when she's not around, which is a challenge in itself. I'm very excited for this year's challenge. I purposefully waited to launch the thread until the last minute. I've barely been watching any movies or TV for the past few weeks (working on projects that keep me away from screens), and last night was the first horror movie I've watched in three weeks (Horror of Dracula). Gonna be a good one, this year. Drunkboxer posted:ps I like the Price themed OP this year, Fran I was gonna go with a different theme, but I was open to new ideas when the thread got into Vincent Price chat. Felt like serendipity.

I'm curious, so play along if you like: I feel like with the glut of streaming services releasing original films, and the confusing nature of theaters and VOD over the last two years, a lot of good stuff has just passed my radar. What are your Top 5 Favorite (or Recommended) Horror Films that have come out in the last 5(ish) years? Please only list movies that would qualify for the challenge.

I have been waiting for this since the last challenge. This year I'm aiming to mostly sit through films from the 70s and 80s while seeing as many as I can at the theater. Naturally any Fran Challenges will be the exception. Again going to aim for at least two movies a day, and movies will be ones I haven't previously done for any of the challenges. October 4th's postings will be iffy since I have to go for day surgery so while I'll be back home movie watching, I'm not sure how coherent I'll be for posting. So, essentially minimum 31 films. Especially nice this year is when my work reopened, my main horror movie buddy came back and about half the new hires are also really into horror (Yesterday had an hour long discussion on Carrie over the work walkie talkies) so I'll be hitting them all up for movie suggestions. This challenge is going to be amazing!

(posting this during a spoooooky midnight thunderstorm) Yessssss I've been looking forward to this and planning my movie list since like July. I have 48 movies on my list this year! Last year I got through 40. Hopefully I'll be able to finish them all this year because my city is still in lockdown for at least half the month, and I'm working from home so I can watch stuff in my lunch breaks too. Also most of these are a tight 90 minutes or so, so watching two in a night is very feasible. SEQUELS TO ONES FROM LAST OCTOBER - A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 - I always start the month with a Freddy film - Friday the 13th Part 2 - Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows - Paranormal Activity 2 - 28 Weeks Later STEPHEN KING MOVIES - Carrie (the original) - The Shining - Doctor Sleep (director's cut) ANIMATED MOVIES - The Corpse Bride - Coraline (along with the Henry Selick/Laika short film Moongirl) - ParaNorman - Lily C.A.T. (anime) - Hotel Transylvania 2 (also a sequel to one I watched last year) - The Book of Life ANTHOLOGIES - V/H/S 2 (also a sequel to one I watched last year) - The Mortuary Collection - Scare Package DOUBLE FEATURES (ORIGINALS AND REMAKES) - The Mummy (1930s) - The Mummy (1999) - Invisible Man (1930s) - Invisible Man (2020) - House on Haunted Hill (1959) - House on Haunted Hill (1999) YA/FAMILY/COMEDY - Goosebumps - Nightbooks - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - The Hole (the Joe Dante one) - The Gate - Haunted Mansion (the Eddie Murphy one) - Fright Night (the 2011 remake) - The Addams Family (the 90s one) - Dracula: Dead & Loving It - Elvira: Mistress of the Dark SUPERNATURAL - Interview with the Vampire - Lake Mungo - His House - The Empty Man - Shadow in the Cloud - Howl (2015) - Ringu (the Japanese original) - Candyman (2021) PSYCHOLOGICAL/THRILLER/ETC - Midsommar (director's cut) - Shutter Island - The Cell - There's Someone Inside Your House - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street SCI-FI - Alien: Covenant - Pandorum --- And the TV shows/specials I'll try to also get through this month for maximum spookiness (don’t worry I’m not counting them as movies) Muppets Haunted Mansion special (Disney+) Scared Shrekless (because I've recently rewatched all the Shrek movies) Midnight Mass (new Mike Flanagan Netflix series) What We Do in the Shadows - season 3 Truth Seekers (Pegg & Frost comedy Amazon Prime series from last year) Creepshow - season 1 Scream - season 2 (I have half the season left) Maybe begin The Outsider (HBO Stephen King series) Maybe that 4 hour horror documentary In Search of Darkness, which I have a DVD of as I backed it but I still haven’t watched it Hedrigall fucked around with this message at 14:36 on Sep 30, 2021 |

Shooting for 31 movies (did 50 last year!), only counting ones that are new to me. No specific themes, have a tentative list already drawn up to choose from. Mostly '80s and earlier, much of it adhering to "the video box/poster for this movie haunted me a child." Going to try and do some that I've had on my list for the last four years but didn't get around to watching. Looking forward to it!

Besides the big ones like Possessor, Us, The Lighthouse etc., here are a few recent horror movies that I liked and don't think you have seen based on Letterboxd: Freaky, Hunter Hunter, The Clovehitch Killer, Knife + Heart. In terms of the challenge, last year I managed 65, but that seems a little ambitious. I'm in for 40+ movies this time around. My plan is to watch one movie I haven't seen from every year I've been on this planet (and I've put them into a list on LB here).

Going for 31 as always. I don’t set specific goals other than that, but I think I’m going to try and get in more rewatches than usual this year. There are so many great horror films I’ve only seen once and in many cases 10+ years ago, I should revisit them more than I do.
|
# ? Sep 30, 2021 16:39 |

For rewatches, I went really heavy into Vincent Price and Hammer stuff last year so I think I'm gonna ease off that a bit(but not completely of course) and go for some things that I actually grew up watching in the 80s and 90s. I have Halloween 4 and 5 preordered, plus I think I'm gonna make a point to rewatch some Freddy and Chucky movies along with Scream 4k and a few of it's 90s imitators.

13 seems both reasonable and doable to me. I have a stretch-goal of 20 since that's how long my list is, but the last 2 years I fell short of my goal so I want to keep it in the realm of possibility this year. The loose theme for my list is essentially "the new-to-me classic poo poo that I've been dragging my feet on for years but thing I'd really dig." I've seen parts of a few of them, but not all the way through. feedmyleg fucked around with this message at 18:26 on Sep 30, 2021 |

It's my favorite 31 days of the year! As always, my personal challenge will be one movie a day for every day in October and all movies are new to me. As an added twist this year, I'm going to try to make this all films that someone reviewed in the twenty-four hours before I start my own viewing. Ideally, it will be movies I was unaware of until I read that post, but I don't think that's likely to happen for 31 days. I am have a lot less free time this year, even less than I usually do. So I'm probably not going to watch a ton of foreign movies; I need things I can put on while I work. I'm probably also going to be skipping extra challenges unless I can double up a day's film with a challenge. Good fortune to all who will be taking the challenge; remember to pace yourself, stay hydrated, and beware the crossroads.
