drat, I was making a thread. Wrote up this OP and everything for DEC/JAN:

quote:

The best teams are showing their quality. Pels, Suns, and Grizz in the West. Celtics, Bucks, and... the Cavs?! in the East.

The race to the bottom is also going swimmingly. Magic and Pistons with 20 losses each, Rockets and Spurs with games to catch up or down I guess in this case.

Thanks to dokmo for infecting the thread with DARKO. By using this insidious simulacrum generating tool, I found out that Marvin Bagley is doing some sort of performance art by using his defensive DARKO stat to create a logo.

yeah they were ninth while dealing with injuries and poo poo all year.

Anytime the were healthy they were really really good.

Not to mention, another year of development for their young players, and the massive upgrade of going from Sexton to Mitchell

I just found their turn around impressive. Third worst in the East two years ago, play in the next year, currently third. They're better then teams with perennial MVP candidates Joel Embiid and Kevin Durant. That's surprising.

If the wacky combination of Okoro, Wade, and Stevens can play playoff-caliber NBA minutes they'll be fine.

That's a big if though.

When it's the big toe, it's super easy in a sport like basketball. Keep in mind, a sprain is a tear and depending on the severity, could take a very long time to heal.

The 76ers have been massively injured for most of the year. Harden only came back recently and Maxey is out for a long while.

Analysis: In the NBA, 100 points no longer assures anything
https://sports.yahoo.com/analysis-nba-100-points-no-075647017.html

"Put simply, 100 doesn’t guarantee anything. Teams with at least 100 points are losing 45% of their games so far this season, the highest such rate in more than 50 years and nearly 10% higher than the league’s all-time average.

Orlando is 4-16 when scoring 100 points. Detroit is 6-14 in those games. Houston is 7-15. It’s just not enough to win in this NBA era, where defense might seem optional — teams insist that isn’t the case — and 20-point scorers appear to be everywhere.

Really. They’re everywhere. Right now, there are nearly 50 NBA players on pace to average 20 points this season. A decade ago, only 11 players finished the season with such an average."

Are scores up across the league, or is the distribution of player scoring getting more lopsided as teams get better at feeding the ball to their better scorers, similar to the way that midrange shots are now the domain of specialists even though the number of midrange shots hasn't declined all that much?

Offenses are both more efficient and also getting more possessions due to pace.

Usage is also more lopsided to the top players, even though players are playing less minutes. This year there are 13 players with usage above 30% so far, a decade ago it was 5.

It’s misleading to compare whole seasons to the first third of one. How much of that holds if you take the first 25 games of each year?

IDK but here are the number of 20+ PPG scorers in the top/bottom ten scoring seasons:

code:
Season	PPG	20+ PPG Scorers
1961-62	118.8	12
1960-61	118.1	14
1966-67	117.4	12
1969-70	116.7	23
1967-68	116.6	15
1965-66	115.5	11
1962-63	115.3 7
1959-60	115.3	13
2022-23	113.0	37
1970-71	112.4	24

1954-55 93.1 4
1998-99 91.6	14
1950-51 84.1 3
1951-52 83.7 3
1952-53 82.7 3
1949-50 80.0 2
1948-49 80.0 3
1953-54 79.5 1
1947-48 72.7 2
1946-47 67.8 1
I'd guess the number of 20+ PPG players should decrease as it already has since the article was written a few days ago.
