In the years after Bayushi Shoju became Shoju I, Emperor of Rokugan, many things changed, and many remained the same. The Clans were reordered and reorganized, and while there was peace between Great Clans, the commoners knew the depredations of bandits, ronin, and other, worse threats. Shoju I, with his Bloodsword, Ambition, by his side, became paranoid, and formed a force of secret informants and spies to monitor his Empire for traitors, conspirators, and malcontents. I, Miya Shouko, witnessed with my own eyes the suffering of the people during this period, for it was during this time that I came of age and travelled the land as one of the Miya Heralds. … One man, above all others, stood as a representative of those who opposed Shoju I's rule--Toturi, the Black Lion. Dishonored and exiled after the coup, it was to everyone's surprise that he managed to raise an army in spite of everything, and still more surprising that the army continued to grow and even win engagements with the Imperial forces. In the winter of 1133, Toturi's Army was on the verge of a whole new level of conflict...as was the Emerald Empire itself. -Excerpts from the introduction of The Scorpion Emperor: A History, by Miya Shouko. Kyuden Morichikai Though it's been only a few short weeks since the visitors from the Dragon lands aided in the reclamation of Kyuden Morichikai, the castle is already livable and has been transformed into a new base of operations for the army--though the Hidden Valley remains the primary base for the majority of the force. You've been assigned quarters here, though, as largely-trusted members and representatives, both to help oversee the rank and file of the army stationed here and to meet with visiting samurai of various clans. And there have been visiting samurai. There have been quite a few, in fact, as Toturi has been sending word out to various likely allies, trying to rally support for the returned Hantei heir. Just at the moment, a delegation of Lion have arrived, the retinue and bodyguards of Akodo Ganjuro, an ageing Lion lord whose opinions on Shoju I have only been ignored because his opinions on everything and anything else are equally sour. You've been asked to see to his arrival and ensure his comfort and the comfort of his retinue, as well as to show a diverse solidarity of several clans, until Toturi himself can arrive to meet with him. "This is certainly more than I expected a ragtag army of ronin to be able to put together," Ganjuro says without preamble as he dismounts, passing his reins to a waiting groom. "I hope you'll fare better than this castle's previous occupants. Do you know the tale? Heh." MollyMetroid fucked around with this message at 03:56 on Jun 23, 2013 |

Ai Lion lords. Well, Ai considers, at least Ganjuro isn't Matsu. She's still sore there. She lets out a puff of smoke from the side of her mouth, then takes the pipe out. "We are more than that, Ganjuro-dono." The respect of the address after his implied disrespect galls her, but Ai is capable of restraining her temper. Sometimes. Barely. "As you will see. Now, please make yourself comfortable." She takes a seat, retrieving her shamisen from nearby and beginning to play - less for Ganjuro than others, but at least it's an attempt. Perform: Shamisen! Yogo Minoru It had to be Lions. If he never saw another one, it would be far too soon. Mind, none had given him any trouble lately, but with a new crop of them that was bound to change. It left him wanting to withdraw to his quarters and mire himself in divinations... if this accursed forest didn't seem to be skewing every lot he drew. Well, maybe he was being uncharitable. They could be perfectly fine. Maybe they'd realize that he wouldn't be here if anything was out of order with him. Not that it would do his frayed nerves any good until he found out either way. He could deal with either, but not knowing let his imagination run wild. Oddly, Ai's playing brings him a measure of calm. He doesn't feel much up to playing in public yet himself, and he certainly prefers more sedate songs, but he knows skillful play when he hears it, and that certainly qualifies. "Several stories, Akodo-sama," he says, erring formal. "I believe the last I heard said a hundred ghosts were driven out by a band of a hundred master swordsmen. Perhaps fanciful, but it does make for remarkable mental image." pre:Name: Yogo Minoru Rank: 2 Clan: neongrey fucked around with this message at 20:53 on Jun 28, 2013 |

Kotone Kotone, as usual, has largely been busied with making sure the guard is properly drilled. Though broadly educated for a ronin - her fighting style and education is rather indicative of her Dragon upbringing - her sublime skill with the blade for her age makes her an obvious choice for that sort of thing. Her skill as a sensei... well, that's becoming honed over time, to put it politely. As the Lion delegate arrives, Kotone bows deeply from her waiting position. "As she says, we're unaware of any 'ragtag' group of ronin, Akodo-sama. My apologies, but you'll only find those who follow Toturi." She smiles, faintly, confident in her position after a year with the Army. "And Minoru can tell you several tales, but you are here and there are greater things weighing on our mind than ghosts-" She replies. "I am Kotone, and the lady playing the shamisen is Ai. It is an honor to have you visit us." Another bow, this time just for good measure, given her expression is a bit more emotive and amused than perhaps it should be. It's been a few years since she's had to put on the mask of a proper samurai, after all, but it feels good to play the part once again. pre:Name: Kotone Rank: 2 Clan: Ronin (formerly Mirumoto Dragon) Experience: 100 School: Mirumoto Bushi 2 / Topaz Champion Path Insight: 152 Honor: 4.5 Glory: 2 Status: 0 Initiative: 5k3 Armor TN: 24 (base 15 + armor 5 + dual-wielding 4) Air 2 Awareness 2 Reflexes 3 (12 cp) Earth 3 Stamina 3 Willpower 3 (12 cp) Fire 3 Agility 3 Intelligence 3 (12 cp) Water 2 Perception 2 Strength 2 Void 3 (18 cp) Void Points: 6 (see Soul of Promise technique) School Skills Rank Trait Emphasis Roll CP Defense 2 Reflexes - 6k3 2 Iaijutsu 3 Reflexes - 7k3 5 Jiujitsu 1 Agility - 7k4 - Kenjutsu 3 Agility Katana 10k4 5 Lore: Shugenja 1 Intelligence - 5k3 - Lore: Theology 1 Intelligence - 5k3 - Meditation 1 Void - 5k3 - Other Skills Athletics 1 Agility - 5k4 1 Battle 1 Perception - 3k2 1 Etiquette 2 Awareness - 4k2 3 Games: Go 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Horsemanship 1 Agility - 5k4 1 Hunting 1 Perception - 3k2 1 Kyujutsu 1 Reflexes - 4k3 1 Lore: Bushido 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Lore: Heraldry 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Skill Mastery Benefit Iaijutsu 3 Draw swords as a free action. Tamori Kaiya Kaiya leans forward. She's heard a tale. "I heard it was built by a noble Otomo... he brought his whole family to live here, and during the winter as the castle was cut off by snow his daughter got involved in a forbidden affair with a visiting Kitsune shugenja." "The one she was betrothed to found out and went to confront the Kitsune, and supposedly caught him practicing maho. When he was told, Otomo-sama was a gentle man and allowed him to commit seppuku. Unfortunately his daughter went mad with grief and killed herself, hoping to join him." "Her ghost soon returned to haunt Kyuden Morichikai. Otomo-sama went mad as well, and fled into the forest to get away from her. Nobody saw him again. The next day his daughter's betrothed insisted on conducting a search and brought the castle's best men with him, but they did not return either. The rest succumbed to the cold or madness. Tora Tora stands off to one side, arms crossed. The ronin has the easy grace of a predator, somehow seeming completely relaxed but on the verge of springing into violent motion instantly. He watches impassively as the old Lion dismounts, but then you can't really say what goes on behind that mask. The former Scorpion bows politely to the Akodo. "I have heard a different tale. That the construction of this place was plagued with ill omens and deaths, yet Otomo-sama persisted, refusing to admit he had made a mistake. Pride and misplaced honor. It was finished just before the first snows. Otomo-sama was not worried, though the winters here were said to be harsh. He had it well stocked, with the finest provisions. And good that he had, for even the first snows piled drifts too high for any man to cross. Kyuden Morichikai was cut off. But Otomo-sama and his vassals were comfortable and warm within its walls." Tora uncrosses his arms. "But the winter dragged on and on. The stores dwindled, and every samurai who went out into the woods to seek game or news found themselves lost in the snows, wandering for hours or even days before eventually stumbling back into the castle - if they returned at all. A strange white fog enveloped them. It was if the outside world had disappeared. The days turned into weeks, the weeks into months... yet the snows did not melt. Desperation grew among the vassals, but Otomo-sama refused to see the danger. Indeed, he acted as if nothing was wrong and no explanation could reach him. He demanded the same luxuries for himself as before, acted as if he were at court in Otosan Uchi itself. And as time wore on, he became erratic. Those who tried to reason with him, to question him, he ordered to commit seppuku or had executed. Others fled, disappearing into the snows. The castle descended into madness. But the lavish feasts for Otomo-sama and his most trusted vassals continued, for his head cook had found a new delicacy." "So the company dwindled further, by ones and twos in the night, until only the cook and Otomo-sama's family remained. Then they too began to disappear. When the snows finally cleared, after a harsh winter, a delegation of samurai went to the castle to see why nothing had been heard from Otomo-sama. There they found a man with no legs and but one arm who told them a story, and then offered to cook them a meal." Tora pauses at the end, and shrugs. "Or so I heard." pre:Tora Comrade Gorbash fucked around with this message at 21:44 on Jan 12, 2014 |

Ikoma Takakage Akodo Ganjuro's reputation had preceded him. Takakage had spoken well, if vaguely, of the noble lord, but it looked as if his new companions found current events more convincing than past glories. The etiquette of the battlefield--and its bold leaders--was unlike that which they may be accustomed. "He is right to be wary of Toturi's Army," thought Takakage, "These are strange times, and we are all cast adrift. But to express it so forcefully? If he was to lead them--or be an ally--none would afford him the dignity due his station." After displaying the proper bows and recognitions of a fellow Lion--erring on the side of caution to account for any inadvertent disrespect caused by his companions--Takakage joins the conversation. "That sounds like a fascinating story, Yogo-san," he said aloud. "Your knowledge of what is fanciful concerning the spirits, and that which is not, shall aid us in the battles to come." The Scorpion's tale is followed by a longer one by the Dragon, which is followed by another by the ronin without the shamisen. "How dreadful," Takakage comments, acknowledging the craft that went into such entertaining (yet instructive) tales. He straightens, displaying his mon clearly to Lord Akodo. He clears his throat to speak. He won't say too much and rob the samurai of his tale--if he wishes to tell it--but this was also a challenge! Lore:History: 5d10o10k3 29 Has Takakage heard Kyuden Morichikai's story? What do the Ikoma histories say? Yogo Minoru Minoru stiffens faintly, and he locks his fingers together tightly, half-concealed by his sleeves. His voice grows softer, diction too distinct to be a mumble but daring in that direction as he says, "Rather I say it is fanciful because I know for a fact we did not have so large a group pass through in the time before word returned that this castle was safe once more. Such tales of deeds grow in the telling. I'm certain there are already half as many stories of how the ghosts were removed as there are of how they got there in the first place. Perhaps there will be more by the time all is said and done." The Ikoma probably hadn't meant anything by it. Probably. But Minoru was on edge as it was (my, and that dreadful telling from the Tamori didn't much help), and it took more effort than he cared to admit to keep from getting sharp.

A quick note before work, because I answered this on IRC but not here: Kyuden Morichikai is a castle that was built basically right next to the Shinomen Forest, which is haunted and full of dangers, by an Otomo who didn't believe any of that was true. One harsh winter the entire population of the castle vanished without a trace. There are obviously several versions of the tale, no official record of what actually happened exists, but a few weeks before the start of Courage, the group from Honor came through and helped clear it out, discovering part of what really happened in the process. Other versions of the tale, for those interested, have been shared in Compassion. None of you are really privy to the full details, but you've all heard versions of the story, so feel free to get inventive about what you may have heard while riffing on the basic facts.

Ikoma Takakage "It is as my comrade says," starts Takakage. "A hundred ghosts were driven from the castle, but not by one hundred men! No, such numbers would be ridiculous: it was but a handful. These bold warriors fought with the courage of one hundred men--or," he waggles his carefully shaven eyebrows, "fifty Lion." "Yes," the Lion bard continues. "As Tamori-san tells us, this castle belonged to an Otomo lord, who cared little for the spirits. He thought them tales of children or old women--not one as wily or as worldly as he. But in the depths of winter, as my masked brother well knows, the nights are longer. Those with guilty conscience see the spirits of their honorable ancestors, chiding them for their misdeeds. Every candle flame holds a blessed eye, ready to burn away the illusions of vice. Even the most honorable of souls is not safe, however. They attract hungry spirits, jealous of the living world's virtue and warmth." He spoke faster now, responding to the crescendo of the shamisen. "Following the noble Otomo's ill-fated winter, it is true one man remained. Whether he was ridden by a hungry spirit or simply too craven to atone for his misdeeds is lost even to my family's history. Whatever the truth--and I am sure you have your suspicions--he called the spirits of his devoured victims to muster with the spring's thaw. The grim army made short work of wandering monks, three sharp-eyed ronin, and even a respected magistrate before their commander realized the harm he had done. When the next visitors to the Shinomen arrived, the sorrowful man offered his head to their merciful blades." Takakage smiles. He's enjoying this. "His army of hungry spirits did not share their leader's remorse and laid into the samurai with fang and talon. They attacked in waves: one! Two! Three! Through strength of arms and purity of spirit, the samurai repelled their attackers each time. Their leader, who was fighting to redeem his dishonored name through glorious combat, faced the stealthiest of these hungry ghosts in the Hour of the Boar. The blood red moon lit their battle on the castle's ramparts, while their glimmering sweat lit the ground below. They traded blows for an hour or more before finally, the samurai fatally clove through his opponent's defenses. I dare not share this brave man's name, for the truth of whether this act restored his family's honor is unknown. Please know, honored Akodo, this castle was hard won. Its salvation inspires us all. No samurai in this army will fall to that which brought ruin to the ill-fated Otomo or his family." Takakage ends his story as the final strains of the melody fade into the misty afternoon. Despite the hustle and bustle of the army around them, several listeners have fallen silent. The Ikoma bard bows obsequiously, chiding himself for his indulgent story. "I apologize, my lord. There are gaps in my story, and it would be edifying to hear the truth of the matter from one so experienced as yourself." Takakage's spending a Void on this Storytelling roll. He's hoping to add value to everybody's story by including them in his frame narrative. He's also hoping to dispel the 'rag-tag' ronin notion by showing deference and composure while still standing up to a challenge. Perform: Storytelling: 7d10o10k4 34

Moto Batu Throughout his youth, Moto Batu was content to develop his talent for hunting and animal tending. In his immediate family, he was renowned for his skill at falconry and tracking. That skill earned him a political marriage into the Daidoji family, known for their skilled archers. Fortune smiled upon him, as he found great happiness in his match. That is, until the coup. Divided by his love for his Crane bride and his own family’s decision to side with the rebels, he was paralyzed. The Bushido codes of Honor and Duty to his clan tugged at him, and his Courage failed. That indecision came to an end when his wife was killed in a Scorpion raid. Enraged, he swore revenge on the wrongful empire. His first act was to track down the people who burned down his wife’s home. The leader, Matsu Kane, escaped, but the others in the unit fell. That victory earned the notice of Toturi’s Army, and he now rides with them. Although he doesn’t care who takes the throne, he believes that the wrong side won in the coup. He is ashamed to have let Matsu Kane escape, and seeks to correct his mistake. He still has a love for hunting and nature, and uses his tracking skills to seek out those who would strike at the Army, especially his chosen foe. He will not let himself stand idly by while those who tore apart Rokugan are still at large, not again. Despite his oath of vengeance, he refuses to forsake his Moto heritage. They were the ones who developed his skills, the ones responsible for his marriage, who made him into the weapon that could destroy the empire. He now wears the traditional kabuki makeup associated with his family, but made up specifically for camouflage. He doesn’t begrudge other traitors, even Scorpions, for they have chosen the same path as himself. For Batu, choosing the proper and just duty is the greatest charge of the samurai and worth dying for. The other soldiers of Toturi's Army have learned that lesson, and so are worthy of his trust. pre:Name: Moto Batu Rank: 2 Clan: Unicorn Experience: 0 School: Moto Bushi Insight: 156 Earth: 3 Air: 2 Honor: 3.5 Sta: 3 Ref: 3 Glory: 1.0 Wil: 3 Awa: 2 Infamy: 0.0 Water: 3 Fire: 2 Status: 1.0 Str: 3 Agi: 3 Taint: 0.0 Per: 3 Int: 2 Void: 2 Initiative: 5k2 Skill Rank Trait Emp/Mas Roll Etiquette 1 Awa 3k2 Lore 2 Int Nature 4k2 Lore 1 Int Bushido 3k2 Sincerity 1 Awa Honesty 3k2 Investigation 2 Per Notice 5k3 Athletics* 2 Str 5k3 Defense* 2 Ref 5k3 Horsemanship* 3 Agi 6k3 Mastery: Can use full attack stance on horseback Hunting* 4 Per Tracking 7k3 Heavy Weapons 2 Agi 5k3 Kenjutsu* 3 Agi Scimitar 6k3 Mastery: +1k0 on damage rolls Kyujutsu* 4 Ref 7k3 Mastery: Can string bow as simple action Animal Handling* 4 Awa 6k2 Intimidation 2 Awa Bullying 4k2 Stealth 3 Agi 6k3 Mastery: Can move Water x 5 (15) ft. with simple move action Advantage Points Strength of the Earth 2 TN penalties for Wounds reduced by 3 Wary 3 +1k1 on Investigation (Notice) rolls to spot ambushes Disadvantage Points Gaijin Name 2 Only one exploding die on Social rolls Moto Curse 4 -1k0 to any roll to resist Shadowland taint Lost Love 3 When reminded of wife, add 5 to all TN Sworn enemy (Matsu Kane, Insight Rank 2) 2 Techniques Way of the Unicorn +1k0 to damage rolls when mounted, using a scimitar, or a two handed weapon. Of course, he's not entirely sure why stories are being shared when everyone seems perfectly aware of what happened, but he knows enough not to voice his opinion. Roll Lore (Nature) - 16

Kyuden Morichikai The old Lion listens to each of you in turn before speaking, waving his hand irritably. "I asked if you knew the story, not for you to tell me ghost tales! Heh. I suppose it's all I could expect, though. Didn't I say something to that effect as we were traveling here, Toji-kun?" Ganjuro addresses one of his attendants. "Yes, my lord Ganjuro," the man responds, but Ganjuro rolls his eyes. "Shut up," he snaps. "You know full well I didn't, you sycophantic little dog. One can't get good help these days," he confides to you. "Clan samurai are too used to bending the knee to anyone who shows the first hint of authority, like Toji-kun here, and ronin, well, they're undisciplined and half of them are descended from peasants. What makes Toturi's Army different? Why should I ally myself with you instead of supporting the usurper's claim?" Theoretically, this is what Toturi and his advisors are meant to be addressing with Ganjuro when they arrive, but clearly the old man isn't patient enough to wait--that, or he's testing you as non-leadership members of the army to see how you'll respond.

Ikoma Takakage "I speak as but one man," Takakage begins, addressing Ganjuro's query. "but one who has met perfidious, craven men who swear allegiance to the emperor and brave, forthright samurai who march under the banner of the Black Wolf. The samurai who have gathered here have done so against all earthly sense. They have left behind their fine gardens and their peaceful temples with the intent to lock eyes--and blades--with armies that outnumber them as if stars in the sky." Takakage slaps his pipe against his palm for emphasis. "They are outnumbered in manpower and provisions, but not in courage. They have accepted their own deaths, not because one man has asked for it, but because their honor demands justice for the empire. This is a choice every warrior here has made for himself, when it would be far easier to bow and scrape or escape into the depths of a bottle. Despite their hunger, their lack of scented pillows, they fight and they win. Their victories are skirmishes, it is true, but they are well-earned. While I cannot deny the existence of shiftless, greedy ronin, they do not live here. I have seen a mysterious man intercede between arrows meant for his commander. With a single slash of his blade, he struck them down. I have seen a samurai-ko who is dauntless in the rigor to which she holds the camp guards. I hear their healthy shouts of exertion, but never see them waver or shirk under her hawk-like eye." Takakage gestures at Tora and Kotone. They're good people! Love them! "Those of Toturi's Army believe in their cause, noble Akodo. The thunder will not scare them, nor ghosts, nor the assembled might of the Imperial legions. I cannot speak for any but myself, but I have seen no cowards or lapdogs here. Only those who seek justice." Moto Batu "Hear hear!" Batu barks, finally making his presence known. "Were we so fortunate to have lords worthy to kneel before! Maybe once we could bend our knees before a courageous sensei, but that time has passed. All of us here have forsaken the comforts of obedience for...for honor and courage!" He stutters a bit here, but it only adds to the conviction he's attempting to convey. He strides towards Ganjuro. "In Toturi, we have found someone worth following, worth dying for, and yes, worth praising too. His worth is so apparent that even the Scorpion ronin among us have put aside mastership of this land for him! They have not put aside the garb of peasants, but those of kings. All of us have already bled for Toturi's cause, and we were glad to do it, for serving and dying with him is far greater than speaking the praises of a false emperor. The number of those who chose Toturi is vast, and grows with the trees themselves." "With respect, if we are to be lapdogs, let us at the very least lie before one on the path of strength." Yogo Minoru Minoru's grip on his hands grows white-knuckled, and the mask shifts on his face as his jaw sets. Oh, I bet you know all about being descended from peasants, you doddering old alley cat. But for as much as that alley cat wanted spine, that was probably going too far. He lingers silently for a few more moments, going over every word in advance before he finally says, "I am by and large a scribe, and not one dreadfully concerned with the niceities of honour. I could hardly fathom why an... honorable warrior does much of anything. The suffering of the land was enough for me, but I speak for no one else. As for why you should think you should offer your aid, Akodo-sama..." Minoru shrugs, though the motion is a bit jerky if only from the rest of him being wound taut enough to play a song if plucked. "That is your own decision. But if you are here right now, either you think we are right, you think we are going to win, or you are planning on killing or betraying us all, now or in the future. But all know the honour of the Akodo family, and that wouldn't be very honourable, now would it? But for completion's sake, I mention it. Any tactical concerns you might have are rather outside my expertise." Hmmm. That sounded much worse when he said it out loud than in his head. Well, it wouldn't be the first Lion he offended. Kotone Bowing slightly in response to Takakage's gesture, Kotone speaks up as she straigthens. "Bayushi swore loyalty to the Emperor. In losing the contest of the Kami, he agreed to serve the Hantei. There are some that say Shoju-sama's actions demonstrate that the will of Heaven has aided him to the throne..." She gestures. "... but what of his ancestor? Does he not turn one of the kami themselves into a liar by his actions? I may have lost my name, but I still feel the pride of the ancestor who bears it for me as he watches. I wonder, does Shoju-sama feel the same? Do the ghosts of his ancestors feel pride at him standing over the corpse of his lord? Or have they fled with this name as well?" She doesn't provide the answer, but the implication is blunt. He is, after all, Shoju the First, not Bayushi the First. Tora Tora crosses his arms again, listening to the reasons of the others. When they've presented their arguments, he speaks. "The reasons I follow Torturi doubtless are of little interest to you, Akodo-sama. As for why you should join his cause..." He shrugs. "We are vastly outnumbered. The Usurper has held the throne long enough that many samurai do not even remember the line of Hantei. The chances of victory are small." He tilts his head slightly. "So, Akodo-sama, where else are you going to find a more invigorating challenge?"

Morichikai The old man slaps his thigh in amusement. "Heh! That's what I like to see! To Jigoku with all this bowing and scraping and political maneuvering, this is going to be a good, old fashioned war! You're going to fight and die, and maybe, just maybe, I'll get a chance to die in battle like a proper samurai, instead of in bed." At this moment, Toku and the other two members of Toturi's council enter the room, just in time for Ganjuro to crow a battle-cry triumphantly, drawing his katana. They fall back, shocked, but Ganjuro laughs. "I'm joining you drat fools in your drat fool crusade," he tells them, sheathing his blade after carefully nicking his thumb. "You don't need to waste any more of my time with tedious speeches and tiresome arguments. Just point me at the enemy and let the battle be glorious. You know how to reach me--I'll be raising my forces if you need me." He marches out past the bewildered leaders, his weary attendants following behind. "Well," says Haru, the monk, "I always did hate hard work, so you'll have no complaints from me." For more information on Haru, check out Honor.

Ai Ai has been focusing on playing the shamisen, largely because she wants to catch Toku's eye. Or ear. She is about to speak when Ganjuro declares his loyalties, and she smiles. He may be annoying and rude, but he's with them. She moves into the song's climax and ending as Toku enters, her smile going from 'surprised' to 'as warm as it ever gets'. Ikoma Takakage Haru was a mystery to Takakage, but a capable commander. That the so-called monk encouraged enjoyment of life's little pleasures were marks in his favor. Nevertheless, he was a man of secrets. "What is worse," Takakage mused as he bowed to Lord Toturi's high council. "A man who is open about his secrets or one who keeps them close to his chest like a hidden blade?" Propriety would answer one way, but during this perversion of heavenly order? That was a question for another time. "Lord Haru! Lord Toku! Lord Gennosuke!" Takakage smiles ingratiatingly, greeting them after Ai. "What more can we ask for? Truly, that is the question. With such a wildcat as our ally, the future is bright. My brothers and sisters have reminded him of what needs to be done. Although we're far from the courts, their most valued flowers remain vibrant." He pauses, curious whether the meeting's schedule would be modified in light of Lord Ganjuro's sudden departure.

Kotone Kotone looked after the parting Lion, stunned into a bit of silence by his outburst. More unconsciously than anything, she finds her hand on her hilt, resting there at the ready. But as as she sees Toku and the other officers, her hand flinches away in a much more... conscious manner, as if realizing where it lay quite suddenly. A bow in their direction, and then rises. "That was quite... sudden, wasn't it?" A wave of her hand, and she folds her arms with a thoughtful look. "And strange. I'd watch him carefully. A samurai that expects to die in battle is serving as expected. A samurai that wants to die in battle..." Here eyes shift to Tatakage for a moment, and then she lowers her voice, her tone slightly more intent as she looks to Toku. "... is a two-sided blade."

Yogo Minoru Minoru glances idly up at the ceiling, with some sort of vague curiosity. Her makes a short, but sweeping gesture with one hand as he says distantly, "There are times when death becomes an estranged brother to a man. Moto Batu "I agree with Kotone. I would not be surprised if he made his choice before arriving here, without the necessary facts." Batu finds a seat and takes it. "What other decisions would he make without proper contemplation? Our path is noble, yes, but not obviously so. It deserves consideration, and life is not so valueless as to seek death in its place." The energy he displayed earlier has almost completely fled. He looks weary and lost in another time. The conflict between thoughts and actions is one familiar to him, and one he hasn't yet conquered. What Minoru has said troubles him, but he doesn't say anything.

Tora The Scorpion shakes his head at the others. "He is an Akodo. He doesn't just want an honorable death, he wants a glorious death, one that will be remembered. He won't throw it away carelessly. A Lion never does anything without a plan of battle. Besides, were any of your reasons for joining this army so considered?" There's no malice in the question - the masked ronin makes no secret of the fact that his own motivations are of a kind with the Akodo's. Tora turns and bows to the commanders. "I told Akodo-sama we had next to no chance of winning, so of course he jumped at the opportunity." He rolls his shoulders to get the kinks out from standing still for so long. "So, what now?"

Yogo Minoru Oddly, it is that which seems to snap Minoru out of his morose reverie: in fact, he tosses his head and laughs, softly but definitively. "Who needs consideration in the face of the only action that serves what is right?" He straightens some, but glances aside. Still, though his face is concealed by the mask, when he speaks once more there is no concealing the smile. Kyuden Morichikai Toku's expression becomes serious. "As it happens..." he begins. Gennosuke is far more direct, however, and cuts off Toku before he can finish. "An army of Scorpion and Imperial troops is bearing down on this castle," he states bluntly. "We knew it would happen eventually once we moved our base out into the open like this, but never expected it to happen so quickly. They're two days march from here, according to our scouts. The bulk of our forces is en route, but it may take them another day after the Scorpion army arrives. We're going to have to hold out until then." Haru sighs. "I'm going to have to do some hard work after all," he complains. "At least until the coming siege can be broken." Toku frowns. "So there you have it," he says. "Everyone, please prepare yourselves...I have faith in each of you--you are each examples of how even among ronin, a true samurai can rise up to the occasion." Did he just smile at Ai in particular? "We'll be drawing up plans for the battle...if you'll excuse us. Ah, unless any of you needed to say something in private."

Yogo Minoru In that moment an old friend returns to Minoru, coiling snakelike about in his insides. Fortunately, if he is skilled at one thing, it is hiding when he is terrified. He shoves that unpleasant sensation aside, and says softly, "Very well. I'd best get to scribing now, then. I'd ask that on the off chance anyone needs me for anything, they wait until I'm finished. This is some delicate work, ah?" He gently laces his fingers together, sleeves sagging forward over his hands. He adds, "I'll come up for air once I'm done, as it were. And if anyone wishes the omens plied for them, I'd ask if they wait until I am, or tomorrow, if anyone asks. There's usually a few when battle is coming." Minoru makes his bows, fluidly deep. Ikoma Takakage "So soon?!" Takakage raises his eyebrows and purses his lips. "This will be one for the histories." His voice is controlled; in a Lion camp he would have been more bellicose. Here, among desperate samurai, he opts for restrained encouragement. "But men have succeeded against such forces in the past. Our position is strong, and I am certain Lord Haru has a masterful strategy in mind." The bard bows to the commanders as they leave to plot and lead. Takakage turns to Kotone. "Kotone-san, if you had plans to impart any lessons before the battle, I would be honored to observe. My skill at arms pales compared to your own." He pauses and smiles: "And, perhaps, there are some among your students who have yet to hear the story of Akodo Himeji's defense of Vigilance Keep." Storytelling and Leadership could help morale.

Tora Tora leans his head back to look up at the sky for a long moment. "Two days?" He looks back down. "Excellent. I was getting bored." He nods to the others and starts walking towards the walls. Kotone Now would be a bad time to mention Kotone hasn't fought a battle. Fights, yes, but wars? Wars are a new thing to her. Arms folded, and she considers, looking to Takakage. "Go to the mountain, petition my sensei for ten years of instruction, and return in two days. Failing that..." She pauses for further thought. "In two days, it won't matter so much how well you strike, as where and when you strike. Somebody that has mastered that... that is who you need to speak to. But I could be glad for you to share your stories." Anything to take their minds off the incoming news, really, which is likely to wound morale as surely as an arrow would. A pause and a smirk as she lowers her voice. "Or maybe you were suggesting I show the men something simple to make them feel learned?"

Ai "Hm...in two days...what we will want is to fortify our position, I think. Make the terrain their enemy." Ai smiles. "You are correct, Kotone-san, in that it is where and when. But we know where and when. We must make sure it is on our terms. They will come at us quickly, because they wish us to die and they are angry. We know this - and we will prepare the men for it." She turns, nods to Toku once, and then lights her pipe. "Chop up the ground near the walls. They will not like to fight on that. Harrying them as they come would be good, too...and, of course, we will want to know this terrain as well as we can. Ambushes, traps..." Not that Ai is thinking of deadfalls - that's not how she thinks.

Moto Batu "Ah yes, I can handle ambushes well." Batu smiles. While he's more accustomed to tracking foes down than letting them come to him, the terrain around the castle is to his liking. "Tch. With the time to prepare and our fortifications, I don't see how we can lose! I've already surveyed the area. We can seek out the perfect places to strike from." "To harry them...yes. That would be wise. Their only strength is numbers, and to take that is to take any hope of their victory." Would Hunting be appropriate for finding ambush spots?

Ikoma Takakage Takakage answers Kotone with a guileless smile. "Simple lessons form the foundation of everything we do. Even the greatest deeds are built on fundamental truths." Several hours of training wouldn't make a lion of a moderately well-fed cat, but it would rouse the blood and focus the mind. Confident warriors would stand long enough for assistance to arrive. "Akodo said much on where and when best to strike. There is great wisdom in following his lead and making this battle one of our choosing." How far did Akodo's lessons extend? Surely, traitors did not deserve the same rights accorded honorable warriors. His sensei had been crystal clear on the matter. "To follow his lead is only good sense. But my strengths are elsewhere: I am a storyteller. I will bolster their spirits while you do what you do best."
