Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS: Full Boost is the latest in the series of The Gundam VS series that stretches back a long way. It is a fast paced, action orientated 2-on-2 arena combat game wherein you pilot giant robots (Mobile Suits) and attempt to destroy the enemy team. Each team has 6,000 points, and you can fill that with any combination of 2 units that can cost between 1000 and 3000 points. Cheaper units are less powerful, but can die more times before running out of your allocated 6,000 points. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoZfYBrCBEA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PvhIpgZGSY The EXVS series is the most popular arcade action game in Japan and the latest version is finally getting a Japanese PS3 port on January 30th, 2014. Due to licensing issues and other etc., the game will likely never be released outside Japan. But luckily you require practically zero Japanese knowledge to play it! Ex-S Gundam is free but only available to those who buy the game's first print run https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAsHYXfnRPw Day 1 FREE DLC confirmed! Infinite Justice - Lacus Version Johnny Ridden's Zaku How does it play? Like this! These are the Arcade controls, but obviously all 4 buttons simply map onto the PS4's face buttons without issue. This is what your ingame move list will look like. Pretty self-explanatory even if you can't read the writing, just press all your moves until you find out what they do! The little characters next to the square button indicate a charge shot, FYI. Basics Extreme VS is a very easy game to pick up and play compared to most competitive arcade games. There are no complicated joystick motions or elongated combos and the execution requirement is generally very low (there are exceptions for a player looking for a challenge), and the game plays just as well on a gamepad as an arcade stick. The core strategy behind the game is usage of Boost - Flying around or using special moves will consume boost, and when your boost gauge is empty you will fall to the ground, unable to use any standard movement options. It's a very similar concept to other mecha-based video games such as Armoured Core. Awakening The "Awakening" system returns from earlier VS games after being left out for NEXT. Your "EX" meter fills up as you take damage and dish it out, and once it's 50% full, you can press all 3 action buttons together to "awaken", restoring boost and increasing your speed, damage and defense, as well as giving you an EX Burst (super) move if you press all 3 buttons again. If your EX meter reaches 100%, you can use your awaken as a "burst" to break enemy combos and turn the tables on them! Extreme Action This is the fastest VS game ever, mostly due to the Extreme Action system. The NEXT Dash from the previous title returns, a mechanic that revolutionised the series. By double tapping the boost (default X) button you can cancel any action in the game barring EX Burst (super) moves, at the cost of extra boost. This technique is fantastic for bombarding your opponent with attacks while closing in, retreating or simply flanking to the side. Joining it is a new technique known as "Rainbow step", which allows you to cancel any melee attack into a dodge with 2 taps of a direction, giving you the ability to "fake out" an incoming melee attack and mess with an opponent's head. It also leads to hilarious yomibattles of the "double rainbow" variety: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRLEG9YdjqI&t=120s Okay, where do I buy this goddamn game?! Any import site! For simplicity's sake, Play-Asia have the regular edition and the premium edition at a good price. Note that the premium edition is identical to the regular except for fancy box art and a DLC code for 30 extra exclusive audio tracks. But since this game supports custom soundtracks... I already played EXVS. What's new to this one? New Mobile suits! quote:YMS-15 Gyan Here's a video showing off all NINETY-EIGHT mobile suits in this game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVZI5bk_gnc Brett wrote up a brief summary of all the new guys here. Other big changes: -Awakening split into two different kinds, Assault and Blast. Assault gives you more damage and offensive options, while Blast gives you more defense and a new evasion option, as well as lasting longer. Both get lots of usage depending on playstyle and your unit. Awakening was also kinda nerfed in general to be less dominant than it was in EXVS. - New bosses! Because we all got sick of fighting the loving Regnant in EXVS arcade mode. - Netplay rooms are now 12 rather than 8 players, much more control and options for room hosts such as setting ping limits etc to cut down on lag. - Online co-op is enabled for both arcade mode and mission mode. There are probably going to be some incredibly hard missions just like the lategame EXVS missions so this will be a huge help. Oh god how do I play this game I am terrible This is, after all, an import game, so you'll probably need a little bit of extra help to get going. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR4tupxJymM Snarf's basics video is the best place to start. Short, sweet, and to the point. EXVS had its own tutorials and EXVSFB probably will as well but since they're in Japanese they're of little use to most of you guys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlJidOS8RIE This is a video covering some more advanced movement and firing techniques. If you progress beyond playing AI games and want to start smashing the trash on netplay it'd be a good idea to start to incorporate these into your gameplay. Both of these are for the previous title in the series but the basic fundamentals carry over. I'll replace them with FB-specific videos once the game is out though. Lastly, Brett has an awesome translated japanese beginner's guide on his site which is very worth a read. Shut up about your nerdy special move bullshit and give me some robot porn! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhXpZ3PjtDA Oh god I'm hooked I need to know where to get more NOW Check out Sabator and Snarf for competitive match videos! Brett's EXVS site is the most comprehensive english language EXVS resource there is, and includes the huge beginner's guide linked earlier as well as a transition guide for anyone who's already familiar with the old version. This section will grow post-release. I am a huge loving just like the OP and I gotta know all about the competitive side of this game! Extreme VS is a very competitive game with a huge competitive scene in Japan, and growing slowly in the west. Although EXVS has a very low execution ceiling, the game is heavily centered around strategic use of boost and judging the opponent's boost levels from their action and movement, and deciding on the best action to counter their action. A lot of the mental tactical elements that form the basis of modern fighting games are also found here, but with the additional element of the second player (EXVS' standard competitive format is 2v2) also demanding your care and attention. Team setup is a core element of the game and choosing 2 units that complement each other is paramount. Units are broadly divided into: Front units that rush the enemy and attack at close range. Examples include: Exia God(Burning) Gundam Back or Rear Guard units that keep a distance from the enemy and have strong ranged attacks. Examples include: Dynames Double X Multirole units that can play both roles. Examples include: Destiny Crossbone X-1 Full Cloth The core competitive strategy of the game is centered around positioning correctly for both you and your team mate; If you are running a rear guard you need to keep him safe, or if you're the rear guard you need to make sure you stay involved and your team mate doesn't get 2v1'd. These elements of positioning and keeping yourself in your optimal position while trying to stay out of the opponent's optimal position is essentially no different on a strategic level from the "footsies" found in most fighting games. Despite appearing as an entirely seperate genre, a large amount of experience in competitive fighting games will serve you well here. Also: it's a Japanese game with playable netcode. Incredibly good netcode, As a matter of fact. as an EU player, connection to others in EU feels close to offline. EU to EC is great, and even EU to WC is playable, albeit with noticable delay (5 or 6 frames). However, the nature of this game renders frame-specific timing of much reduced importance in comparison to fighting games. drat I don't wanna read all that poo poo! I just wanna play with goons! I'm pumped for this. Been playing these for as long as they've been on consoles (though sadly missed the portable releases on account of no PSP). So this includes all the purchasable DLC from Extreme VS? I'm a bit miffed that I paid for them, but not enough to stop my knee-jerk purchase. Also it might be a good idea to include something about the gameplay changes and new suits in the OP, by the way. The roster definitely got a nice bump from this. zenintrude posted:This looks like Virtual On. Are you sure this isn't Virtual On? Thanks, fixed! And yeah, pretty much all modern mecha games descend from virtual-on, since it was widely recognised as the first actual fun one. Pretty much everything from VS series to armoured core cribs a few things from it. VS is generally simpler though due to the gunplay being about positioning rather than aiming. EDIT: some translation excerpts from the developer interview: quote:>Apparently, the most-requested feature was online co-op play. That was why implementing it in the PS3 version was so critical. The idea was that in a pure versus environment, new players would find themselves holding back more experienced teammates in player-on-player battles and the ability to teach someone the ropes was difficult as well. With online co-op play for Arcade and Mission Mode, you are playing versus the computer on a selectable difficulty level. It's easier to bring new players up to speed, or for veteran players to enjoy teaming up to conquer more challenging aspects. Popehoist fucked around with this message at 06:30 on Jan 11, 2014 |

I haven't played this series since the original Gundam Vs. Gundam on the Dreamcast, except for a short amount of time with Next Plus on the PSP, which I couldn't get into. I enjoyed the original since it felt more action/battlefieldish, similar to some Gundam games like Lost War Chronicles, Journey to Jaburo, Battle Universe for PSP, and Battlefield Record 0081 for PS3, as opposed to fighting games which I never really was any good at. Am I likely to enjoy the action and shooting in this, or will the fighting game aspects more likely turn me off?

Yeah, ever since NEXT the VS series has trended more towards fast and simple gameplay to distance itself from games like the battle series etc. It's fairly different from NEXT+, but I can't in good faith reccommend this to you if you didn't like NEXT+, since it seems like you go for the more kind of "realistic"-handling games.

If you like the CE universe it's not bad at all. AEUG vs Titans was the last one to get a US release if I remember right.

I've never ever played this game or anything in the series, but every time I step into an arcade here in Japan there's always a match or two going on and I have to stand and watch it. It really is like a flashier, crazier Virtual On with a lot of teamwork and footsies, and it's tremendous fun to watch four good players go at it even if you have little idea what's going on.

It's the latest fad in anti-piracy. Each new copy of the game comes with a code that you use to authenticate to the online servers. Each code can only be used on one account (or one console, or one account on one console, depending on nothing rational) so if you sell the used game, the next guy has to pay $10 or so to get online with the same disc. It's a cash grab aimed at extracting money from the secondary market for the publisher.
