I've noticed an increase in biblical and faith based movies at the box office. Are any of them worth watching?

They are all really hilarious strawmen though. You could probably make a pretty good drinking game from most. Drink if: -atheism caused by traumatic events -atheist professor -Christians in America openly mocked for their beliefs -Christians in America openly mocked for their beliefs by an educator -atheist converted by Christian -atheist converted on his deathbed -Catholicism never mentioned -Catholicism portrayed negatively The thing is, they are very cheap films to make and have a built in audience. Church youth groups love to organize trips to screening. The movies don't have to be well made but the audience is specifically asking to be catered to.

They are all worth watching. Now, for my free illustration I would really like a funny caricature of yourself please. Right beside that it would be cool to see a real photo so we can see how funny the caricature is. Thanks a lot, there's no pressure but I have a lot of sway with the mods and it could turn into a mod challenge so you should just do it edit: i have it on good authority that this thread won't be gassed if you do this

Christianity is beseiged and persecuted on all sides by horrible forces such as abortion-loving harpies and gays who want the same rights as regular god-fearing folk and they're fighting back in the only option that's been left to them by the radical homofeminazi agenda; professionally-produced and distributed movies.

Christian movies aimed at Christian audiences tend to be garbage. Movies with Christian themes aimed at mainstream audiences on the other hand, they tend to be more artful about their message. They could be overt like The Mission, or subtextual like Wrath of Khan. Noah, from what I've read online, is actually sourced in Gnosticism and not Christianity, so it's a religious film but not the religion everyone first assumed.

But seriously, I do love you... just not, you know, you you, see what I mean?" My comeback to this is, "Well, I practice something similar, love the Christian, hate the Christianity." For some reason this seems to offend them even though I'm just givin' em Real Talk (TM) about how my beliefs make me hate them, whoops, I mean not them, just like... the things they do and are.

Iamblikhos posted:Prometheus was a good Christian movie. Kidding aside, it's actually an interesting movie about the debate between atheism and religion. ***** Tron and Star Trek and their sequels are hilarious. Tron is a very simple "programmers and programs are like God and humans, isn't that neat-o?" and then when Tron Legacy rolls around, the movie's like "nope, God sucks, look at all this life that spontaneously evolved on its own!" Star Trek was envisioned by Roddenberry as an atheist socialist utopia, where everyone had advanced beyond the need for religion. Then when the first film barely squeaks by in the box office they give the reins to Bennet and Meyer and they turn Wrath of Khan into "Space Jesus died for your sins, here, listen to Amazing Grace!" I just imagine the directors of both sequels metaphorically mooning the directors of the first films.

TRUTH BOOK DOT COM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJcf8n3sqM0 quote:Adam and Eve arrived on Urantia, from the year A.D. 1934, 37,848 years ago. It was in midseason when the Garden was in the height of bloom that they arrived. At high noon and unannounced, the two seraphic transports, accompanied by the Jerusem personnel intrusted with the transportation of the biologic uplifters to Urantia, settled slowly to the surface of the revolving planet in the vicinity of the temple of the Universal Father. All the work of rematerializing the bodies of Adam and Eve was carried on within the precincts of this newly created shrine. And from the time of their arrival ten days passed before they were re-created in dual human form for presentation as the world's new rulers. Night of the Hunter is a really good Christian movie and probably the most profound cinematic statement on the religion. Christianity, Jesus, and God are taken as a given as good things. It never sees Atheism or lack of God as the enemy of Christ. Atheism is never really considered by the film. The enemy of Christianity is itself. The film tells a tale of two Christianities. There is Rachel who represents humanistic Christianity. She does not assume God's nature and she's prone to accepting a relative view of the Bible. It is the core value of taking care of the little in a cruel world that defines her faith. Powell is patriarchal Christianity. He is all about shaming others and keeping the little in line. Of course, it's all a mask for the fact that he himself is a monster. Night of the Hunter of course never feels like propaganda, and that's the difference between it and a lot of new Christian crap. There are great Christian artists whose faith is an engine for their work. And there are great non-Christian artists who can appropriate Christian ideas in interesting ways. The same is true with any religion. A film like Night of the Hunter works because its view point is thoughtful and nuanced. As much as Rachel and Powell verge more on being symbols than characters, they never feel like mouthpieces for an agenda. And in the end, despite being a huge Atheist, I think the moment when Rachel faces off against Powell and starts singing back to him, "Lean on Jesus..." might be one of the most badass things I've ever seen on film. The film does a good job of getting you to buy into everything Rachel represents. Stuff like Christmas with a Capital C or God Isn't Dead is propaganda, and it isn't even loving good propaganda. They're hissy fits at the notion that someone disagrees with them or maybe was a dick about how they disagreed with them or doesn't let them have their way 100% of the time. They come off as stilted and silly because they have to exaggerate their opposition into parodies. What's really hosed up is that as much as Night of the Hunter despises Powell, it understands him. Powell is a gross monster, but he's a fully realized human being. You get him. He comes off as more real than the strawman atheist they throw in these films. At least Heaven is for Real seems to be just simplistic reassurance about the fact that life goes on after death rather than trying to take part in any culture war.

Heaven Is For Real is a loving weird movie. It's so weird that I can't really hate it. There are so many bizarre direction choices in it that it comes across as a horror movie. Apparently in the book, the kid starts explaining about the coming war between God and Satan, but the movie literally only says the word "Hell" once, so it completely glosses over its own obvious questions. Also, the kid meets his miscarried sister in Heaven. It is also the longest review I have ever written.

I don't understand where this trope of colleges as atheist havens that persecute god-fearing Christians came from. There's approximately one atheist/agnostic student association on my campus and approximately 10 million Christian ones. And I live in one of the most liberal towns in California. I think what happens is sometimes Christians students go to college, and then get exposed to thinking outside their parents' worldviews and sometimes (though obviously not all the time) become atheists or agnostics. Their parents, being rather dogmatic, assume that the professors brainwashed them, because knowledge can only come from an authority figure and not one's own independent thought. This gets misinterpreted as college campuses being bastions for atheists, which they're really, really not. TL;DR Christian propaganda films are stupid. Though I do want to listen to the Rifftrax for God's Not Dead when/if it comes out.

A couple years back, my mom kept inviting me to go see Christian movies with her, they're pretty much all garbage. Evan Almighty was an inoffensive Hollywood comedy, and Amazing Grace was okay (but everyone else I saw it with was annoyed that it wasn't religious enough). Those were easily the best ones. I started declining her invitations when she wanted me to go see that weird Ben Stein propaganda movie.FreudianSlippers posted:Good movies about Jesus: Cool Hand Luke Angel's Egg

Noah is a good movie and that's because it was deliberately NOT made to be yet another cheap Bible-exploitation film. It's poetry. Some may call it a presumptuous film but I think it succeeds for the most part. It's like Hollywood is finally learning to treat Christian mythology the same way it treats Greek mythology: not to be faithful and church-approved but exploited to make brilliant and entertaining spectacles (this is not to say the film is heretical; I think religious types will find it matches the spirit of Scripture if not the letter).
