I respect Bill Gates, he works full time on his philanthropy. After you have accumulated so much wealth the only logical thing to do is spend the rest of your life trying to use it as intelligently as possible on the most promising disease prevention, human development, economically lifting way that has the greatest effect on other people.

It's kinda cool that Africa can skip the whole developing of antiquated telecoms infrastructure and jump right to cell phones. Villagers will pay the guy in town with the cell-phone to talk to their relatives in the next town over. Maybe if banks made micro investments more people could buy cell phones?

Oh that's dumb. But at least it's schools and not prisons. Profit doesn't always equal evil right? Sounds like parents who are active in their child's learning would be the ones drawn to them anyway and that's the most important thing. And about the investing in the US poor thing mentioned earlier I think that thinking on a global community scale is cool and under-minds the power of politicians.

All you create are people who can recite the things they're taught, but not really do anything beyond take various statements at face value. Education, at its heart, creates people who ask why. All charter schools do is destroy the idea that education should be free and available to everybody. In a way, it's kinda like Windows: you pay a lot of money for something you can get free if you just do some reading and research.

Yeah there's probably a ton of corruption when people try to spend their money on hope. That's why I think philanthropy is a full time job, you have to keep watch over everything. Just the fact that money and goods are moving around in Africa instead of AK47s is a plus. It's probably naive to think that propping up a shame business in africa would lead to legitimate businesses growing up around the fake ones though.
