This a thread for blowing off some steam discussing socialism and heck maybe other political ideologies too in the fallout of the 2016 presidential election. GBS is an inclusive and openminded place where everyone is welcome to post they thoughts and feelings but please be respectful of our posting culture and refrain from walls of boring text, try to keep it light hearted and make a joke or two.

Crash74 posted:Effort Post: thanks for posting this its pretty dang interesting ill add the book to my pile the issue here is that the ideal of communism the the soviets claimed to be working towards is its own whole thing and they transitional socialism is a widely acknowledged and documented failure and definitely not what most people are talking about when we talk about socialism in 2016. thats why i personally wouldnt call myself a socialist that shits so broad as to be meaningless the results belenko was so impressed by were the result of capitalist america adopting aspects of social democracy under fdrs new deal legislation following the great depression namely a welfare state, collective bargaining, strict economic regulation and progressive taxation all of which was being slowly repealed at the time and are either going or long gone in modern times and those are the policies we desperately needed to return to this electoral cycle imo

There are still factional struggles between Trotskyists and the Stalinist wing of a dead ideology LMAO. The Stalinist wing is still the prevailing ideology and they try and stamp out Trotskyists from their FB pages, etc. With that being said, I think the Permanent Revolution will occur, we just need to wait until this whole capitalism thing runs its course.

i legit think chavez while flawed is a pretty successful example of modern revolution he did great things for the poor and the people who opposed him were the grossest most arrogant bougie shills imaginable before the hillarymen took that title and ran with it

Are they walking around going "Stalin did nothing wrong, the 20th communist congress was a reactionary betrayal of Leninist ideas by Khrushchev"? I mean, with all of Hitler's unpopularity with sane people at least he wasn't discredited by his own party and regime. Being a Stalinist in the 21st century sounds like the lamest, least ideologically consistent way to go through life.

Yeah, I read Jacobinmag. Does that make me a revolutionary? No, it makes me part of a movement, part of a new scene that will upend existing power structues, forged in a genuine struggle with the working class toward social movement unionism

H.H posted:There are still Stalinists around? LMAO. Pretty much. I "liked" some group on Facebook because they had free e-books; and they'd get real uppity if anyone questions the sanctity of the 5 year plans, collectivization, etc. It was kind of funny at first, but then got sad like that scene in Life of Brian where The People's Front of Judea is arguing over what their official title is.

The US will eventually reorganize public life in such a way as that every worker has some ownership in the outcome and profit of his or her labor. It might be a long way off, and it may require the state losing any claim to legitimacy before being remade. Or the planet will burn. I'm not Nostradamus.

the first function of the state should be to consider the basic needs of every citizen inalienable rights and ensure they are met reasonable people might disagree on what those needs fully encompass but food water shelter and security are not debatable the state that fails to provide those is a failed state and should be overthrown

I don't really get what socialism is and the OP's post about it was too long to read. Do those Scandinavian countries like Sweden count as socialist? Isn't the goal of a lot Bernie Sanders type people to be like those Northmen? Or does socialism just exist now in hellhole countries like Cuba and that South American country that made a bunch of money off oil and then spent all of their money and then when the price of oil plummeted they went bankrupt and the country became a lawless hellscape? I don't know. I hope when millennials take over and institute socialism they don't spend all the money at least.
