Beware the Hun in the Sun - An IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad LP

Let's Play Il-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad, Moscow, Kuban, Bodenplatte, and more!

That doesn't seem to reassuring...
-----------------------------------------
Initially released in late 2014, Il-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad saw the return of one of the most beloved flight sim franchises of all time. Coming off of the poorly received Il-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, criticized for its lack of variety, critical bugs and poor performance, Il-2:BoS was met with a lot of apprehension from fans, and some, like myself, still felt let down thanks in part to a missing career mode and mission/scenario creation tool. 3.5 years later, and the game has received multiple major updates, as well as numerous smaller ones, adding new functionality, planes, missions, and, even more importantly, a proper campaign mode making it feel a lot more like its predecessor from 2001.

With that said, the number of pieces of DLC this game is accruing can be worrisome for those who wish to dive into this game head first, and even those who want to wait for one of several sales that occur throughout the year. And that's not even getting into the scripted campaigns, made before the release of the career mode, and premium aircraft, which are sold separately from anything else. As of writing this intro, the next DLC, Battle of Bodenplatte, is in the works, with a potential Pacific update in the works.

So why do you want to show this off, what does this have to do with me, and how can I participate?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, you may remember an LP I started a number of years ago, using Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946, with mods. I've always wanted to show off more flight sim fun, but without a career mode I didn't feel like I could do anything but show some multiplayer action, rather than something that people could create a narrative with, and see where it goes. That and good flight sim games should get more love.

That said, thread participation will involve decisions regarding our supported faction, background, plane/squadron we will choose to join, and a few other things. Sadly, I don't know how to modify names or stats, so we'll just have to live with what we got.

How is this going to work?
--------------------------
I'll be flying within a designated unit, continuing the proud tradition of the PS3 + KB/M setup I've always had. Difficulty will be Medium, with a heavy density of action. Difficulty options will be as seen below, as well as the reasons for my choices:

Reasons for options are:

1. No Autopilot can be super tedious, and I only use it for longer flights until radio chatter comes on or we are nearing obj, autopilot is not used to fly home.

2. Warming engine is just boring.

3. Engine/radiator management is just for the present so I dont wreck my engine 20 mins into each mission. Im sure radiator wouldnt be a huge issue, but engine management after a huge hiatus is not good.

4. Spectators/external views cause why not? No external views are used until dead or landed.

5. Navigation Markers on because I dont have time to study maps for weeks on end to get everything right, and the map doesnt even work anyways!

I will be playing at the slowest possible campaign speed. The goal? Survive World War 2.

But who shall we be?

The anonymous poll has determined that we will be playing as the Russians, but we have plenty of options to choose from, such as our:

Name: Boris B Bolshevik
Date of Birth: Before such things were recorded
Backstory: Farmer by trade, Sausage-maker by necessity

As well as which squadron we will join (FIRST TO 3 WINS)

Our options are:
-Attacker: Il-2 Sturmovik (Flying artillery)

Everything's out to kill you

Starting a campaign - An intro

A look at the Main Menu

The sense of scale that the game achieves is staggering, and reminiscent of prior games in the series.

Here is the furthest you can zoom in on Rzhev, the grid used should be 10km by 10km.

A large selection of aircraft comes at a price. Gold bars indicate premium-only aircraft.

The various DLC also add a variety of new maps.

We will be playing through Battle of Moscow, continuing through Battle of Stalingrad, and ending with Battle of Kuban.

We can choose to play as either faction

The startling scale is even more apparent when you see the fully zoomed out map, which doesn't completely fit on the screen.

You can only choose the squadrons with a green + symbol

Additionally, you can select either a specific phase, or a specific unit to narrow your options.

And each unit has their own history/background, detailing any important changes and actions they participated in.

And even what planes are available for the unit

Once you've selected your unit, you get to create your profile. There are some limits, although being a time-travelling neo-nazi does not appear to be one.

Each option generates a different background, although it doesn't change if you re-select an option.

The Russians also get histories, which is nice.

Click on a plane and it'll tell you everything you'd ever want to know about it, which is incredibly useful.

After you've selected your unit, pilot, and plane, the campaign can truly begin. The "first day" merely allows the player to check the roster before generating any missions and events.

A new pilot obviously won't have any victories.

But some of these unit veterans may have some!

There's no real character limit, although I noticed a "Crash to Desktop" most likely caused by an overflow

The leaderboard is updated per day, and events will change as the war progress (as far as I know, anyways)

Speaking of days... each time you progress to the next day, a new set of atmospheric values are generated. (I just noticed <NULL AIRFIELD>

Missions in the morning could affect missions in the afternoon, although I don't know if you can fly both, yet.

Like its predecessors, Il-2 keeps a record of all your accomplishments. Hmmmm... "Get Rich Or Die Trying - Let's Play Il-2 Sturmovik"?

You can also use one of a number of paint schemes in the game by default. Sadly, I don't believe you can use custom skins right now.

And you can also customize what you will bring to fight. Obviously, taking bombs or rockets won't do much for an escort mission.

And before setting out on a mission, you can review your flight plan, with important details marked on the map, such as distance traveled, what your altitude should be, your heading, etc.

I know the P40 is probably going to win the vote, but I want to chuck in my 2c for the Sturmovik. I'm an A-G dweeb and even though its literally the title plane, I don't think I've ever seen a decent LP of it in this or IL2:1946.

As for character names/ details, I suggest the following:

Boris B Bolshevik the Farmer. Boris saw his first internal combustion engine on his farm's state supplied tractor. Upon the outbreak of war he left his home and joined the air force to save the motherland from the German aggressors. Now instead of tilling fields in a soviet tractor, he uproots German weeds with his flying soviet tractor Sturmovik.

Name: Boris Medinsky
Birthdate: 4/18/1893, or an old guy just in general if we can't go that far back.
Squadron: 62nd ShAP, let's play with the plane on the front of the box.
Background: The Tanker

I miss Rise of Flight's backgrounds, one of the German pilots got into the air service by bribing some high-ranking officers with cheese.

Sad news, the game would hear none of Boris' middle name initial. It seemed to cause some mission generation bug, so Boris B Bolshevik will henceforth be known as Boris Bolshevik.

Also, finished recording the first episode (for gifs and stuff) and we've already got combat stress and a sign of traitors within the VVS? The Commissar will here of it!

I am disappointed all the pilots you can pick are male. Historically there were many famous and heroic female combat pilots in the Russian armed forces during world war 2 and there remain so today. Please correct me if I am wrong and Russian female pilots are in the game. If you doubt me about their existence in real life, look up the Night Witch squadron on Wikipedia for one of the more famous examples and links to a few more.

Oh, I know all about female pilots. I haven't seen any yet, which I admit is pretty poo poo, it would really help the historical aspects, as well as breaking that barrier to be more inclusive about their contributions to the fight.

they didn't put the Po-2 in the game yet, though there is a chance for stuff like it to fill the gaps when they add the old WWI stuff from Rise of Flight

otherwise every female Russian pilot I know of flew a Yak7. iirc they do finally have the variant Lydia Litvyak flew in one of the recent expansions so it wouldn't surprise me if there is even a livery

but if anyone is going to do a roleplay of an irl pilot they should do Pokryshkin because he flew some crazy stuff like the Mig3 and P39 irl very aggressively and directly into and against some of the worst odds of anyone in the war and somehow survived it all.

Boris Bolshevik - 09 October 1941

The Commissars did not believe Boris when he claimed he was born in Jesus' lifetime, although maybe it was a good thing nobody took him seriously on the matter...

Russian forces surrounded... this wasn't the first time the damned Nazis had accomplished such a feat, and just like in previous instances, the VVS did all it could to help those trapped in the enemy's iron grip.

The 62nd ShAP has not been so lucky so far, it seems.

Only 10 pilots are left in the 62nd ShAP, including Boris.

All of whom have quite a number of hours on record, and even an ace!

quote:

From the War Diary of Boris Bolshevik - 62nd ShAP:
October 9th, 1941

04:00
I can't sleep. My restlessness at being at the frontline is readily apparent to Yakovlev, the unit commander, but he doesn't seem to care right now. I guess they really need the manpower around here...

04:30
We gather in the briefing room without having eaten yet, so as to review today's assignment.

Arsen, Constantin and Agafon seemed displeased and, at first, I didn't realize why. I rubbed my eyes and focused my view and saw that all three men were scheduled for two combat sorties today. Internally, I questioned the decision but did not dare speak out about it.

The plan for both attacks were simple. Fly a straight line until you spot your target and destroy what you could. If the target couldn't be found, you were authorized to attack anything unfriendly.

05:00
With the briefing over, we headed to the mess to eat, talk, and prepare for the coming assignment. I watched the others prepare, taking cues from those with more experience.

08:55
Over an hour later and the morning's group finally makes their return from their sortie. Only 5 of the 6 planes returned. Owing to complications with the new airfield (Zinoviy tells me the unit only recently transferred to this strip of land), Agafon's machine bounced off the uneven ground and came down hard, damaging the plane and lightly injuring himself. Anatoliy accidentally hit Commander Yakovlev's plane while taxiing, resulting in some light damage to both planes, but nothing that couldn't be fixed relatively quickly.

We all thought Constanting Osipov would be the first casualty after his Il-2 receive a few nasty hits by flak over the target, and contact was lost while returning to base. We received word via cable later that he had to nurse his plane to the ground, and was approached by some of our infantry that saw him go down. He came away with some shrapnel wounds, but nothing serious.

12:00
After a light lunch, I went over Number 4 one more time to see what I was going to carry into combat the first time.

A full fuel load, 2 machine guns, 2 cannons, 4 bombs, and 8 rockets. I told the armourers to change the delay on my bombs to 3 seconds. I did not want to be near when those things went off! I tried making the same change to the rockets, this being the first time I'd seen such weapons, but the man in his oil-stained coveralls told me those were contact only. The colours making up the camouflage of the craft were... interesting, and I likened it to spilled coffee. I guess it sounded better than mud, dirt, and grass.

14:30

Final prep before we begin checks and take-off. I am nervous, but determined to see this through.

Procedure seemed unorthodox. Was I the lead of the last 3 planes of the formation? Was I supposed to cover Yakovlev in a fight? The lack of direction worried me a little, although I supposed if I was doing something wrong, I would be told so.

15:20
I can see the approaching fighters, and flight leader Avdeev shot some flares to announce our presence. I think they are MiGs, and they immediately install themselves in a circling pattern above our formation.

15:32

Still nothing but landscape as far as the eye can see. I begin to wonder if we'll even see any enemies when suddenly Flight Leader Avdeev calls for the assistance from the fighter cover, I scan right, nothing. On my left!

Bastards! Even though the fighter cover didn't spot the Germans, they quickly dove down and engaged them. I thought about helping them out, but my plane was loaded down and quite lethargic in the air. Besides, that wasn't my mission.

Voices calling targets and situations were providing a constant chatter over the radio. Following my flight, we spotted and engaged the armoured column, which was just entering a wooded area split in half by a paved road. It made it a little easier to plot a course for the best possible results.

We fired a number of rockets into the column, although my inexperience saw most of mine completely missing their mark. (Later, I was told that the accuracy on those was quite low to begin with, and I shouldn't worry too much about it)

After performing my rocket attack, I proceeded to climb altitude slightly and taking a wide circle to port, coming around and spotting some light vehicles at the rear of the column. As I dove on my target, what looked like a flak gun on top of a tank chassis, the wind appeared to pick up, and my heavy rudder didn't allow me the finesse to land my shots, that threw up the ground just above and behind my target.

Proceeding in a straight line, I began to pull up again to perform the same wide circle I'd previously done, and saw a Bf-109 flying at my 12 O'clock high, in a straight line. I took the opportunity to pull up hard and let loose some rounds. None of them found their mark, and I heard some clunking noise in the rear of the plane. Had I damaged it? Was someone shooting at me? I hate non-existant view from this cockpit! :argh: I couldn't hope to catch the enemy pilot, so I returned to the convoy, now bunched up on the road. After going down to treetop level, I let loose the remaining two rockets I had, to no effect. Now to drop my bombs! I mashed the button furiously, but felt no release, and heard no explosion afterwards.

Had my controls been shot up? Had the system developed a fault? Did I check everything to ensure the bomb release mechanism was working? Was it sabotage? I cursed the questions flooding in my mind and attempted to forget it quickly.

15:36
After my third attempt at damaging or destroying any equipment on the ground, a twin-engined craft came into view at my 10 o'clock, streaming two thick white smoke trails, both from its right wing. I chose to ignore it for another plane, a second Bf-110 I had read so much about in the news. It seemed to be undamaged, good. Nobody could claim I had a handicap! I opened the throttle and gave chase, wasting some ammunition here and there with some rather desperate attempts to damage the enemy in some visible fashion to make up for my earlier deficiencies.

15:39
The Bf-110, after taking a few light hits, seemed to have been spooked, the pilot choosing to try turning.

https://i.imgur.com/SDJ3c4i.gifv

OORAH! I don't think anybody else saw that, but I hope that Flight Leader Avdeev allows me to claim the kill anyways.

15:41
I see a few fires in the distance, hopefully none of those are from our planes. I scan the area as best I can and notice a twin-engined plane trailing two... wait, was that the same plane as before? I pull up above it and begun a shallow dive to catch up to it. I almost felt bad shooting this one down, cannon rounds ripping off a wing and sending it crashing to the ground.

Shortly after, I spotted some lights in the sky. Had we intercepted a group attempting to land? I did see an airfield nearby...

I guess I'm just grateful to know there's still some friendlies in the area.

https://i.imgur.com/THXBDPW.gifv

My hands are sweaty, I've already got three kills under my belt. I have to focus. I've lost sight of the friendly fighter and I cannot find another Il-2 anywhere. I continue to fly, directionless, and spot the enemy airfield again. I haven't seen any flak coming up from this location, so I begin a run on some parked aircraft, hoping I still have bullets to send flying.

A cloud of dust envelopes my target, and I have to assume I destroyed it. Fearing retaliation, I fly in a northerly(?) direction, and spot some tracers far in the distance. I fly nearer and spot an armoured vehicle along a road, I empty my guns into it.

15:47
I've become lost. Any tracers in the sky have faded away, and try as I might I cannot see anyone else in the air around me. I do my best to fly in a northeast direction for home. Some time later I spot an artillery position and initiate an attack run, but immediately upon letting lose a pair of cannon shells, my guns fall silent. Out of ammo... Well, at least I'm getting closer to the frontline.

16:00
I finally spot my airfield after initially mistaking the nearby villages for a different zone on my map. After checking the skies to see if anyone else was coming in to land and finding no one, I make my final approach and stop outside the southermost hangar.

17:30
Everyone has landed, and we've made our reports to the unit.

My claims for 4 aircraft: 1 Bf-109, 2 Bf-110 [+1 Parked]. One vehicle was attributed to me as well, while the rest of the flight gets the lion share of the objective. We all raise a glass to our success at supper and retire for the night.
