Monster Hunter: World is Capcom's latest addition to the long-running Monster Hunter series of games, which started back on the PS2 in 2004. Monster Hunter is a relatively slow-paced hack-and-slash game all about, well, hunting monsters using big weapons and making equipment out of monster parts, which are then used to hunt tougher monsters. Huge in its native Japan, MH has historically struggled to get big in the West due to its somewhat-justified jank and graphical limitations once it became a mostly-handheld franchise. World is the first game in the fifth generation of games, released in January 2018 on PS4/Xbox (Autumn 2018 for PC), and has become Capcom's best selling game ever. With its many quality-of-life improvements, World has been the most accessible Monster Hunter yet, and many peoples' first time foraying into the series, including myself. If you want to check out some other MonHun LPs, have a look at Wethamster's Freedom, Freedom Unite and Tri LPs in the archive, or Silver Falcon's current run of Generations as a kitty cat.

About this LP:
I'm aiming to show off the story mode of World, alongside any relevant, novel or exciting optional quests and miscellaneous arena quests/event quests/whatever along the way. Fights and story will be in video, whilst any supplementary information like item descriptions, equipment stats and basic weapon guides will be posts. Whilst the story is a bit barebones, I think it's serviceable and deserves to be shown off alongside the amazing gameplay. I'm hoping to show off all 14 weapons at least once, and whilst I can't promise competency with all of them I can hopefully show enough basic knowledge to not make those weapon experts riot. With that little introduction over, let's hop to it!

Spoiler policy:
Whilst MH:World does not have the strongest of stories, I would still like it to be judged on its own merits as things come up. There are just a couple of simple rules:
1) Do not discuss a monster before it has shown up. It doesn't have to be a mission focused on it, but please wait until it shows up on video before talking about it. I don't care if it's on the cover art, don't talk about it until we see it.
2) If a monster has shown up, keep World fight mechanics in spoilers until we fight it. You're free to talk about other things like design or how it acted in previous games outside of spoilers.

Episode 1: The New World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlEvqlRvz_E

Click here for the stats of the equipment in this episode!
Click here for the descriptions of new inventory items this episode!

Our hero emerges from a crisis unscathed. Unfortunately not much hunting happens this episode, but I promise that the next episode will at the very least see us hunting down our first large monster to compensate. There are a couple of technical glitches in the video but they'll be solved by next episode.

As mentioned in the video, there are three decisions up to the thread in the form of a vote:

1) The name of our intrepid hunter
2) The name of her trusty Palico companion, the real hero here
3) A weapon type for our hunter to specialise in

A quick rundown of the various weapons, of which I have varying levels of competancy:
Greatsword: Slow attacks but very hard hitting with its charged attacks. Highest damage potential in the game. Surprisingly mobile due to its quick sheath speed, but requires a patient and deliberate playstyle to do high damage.
Longsword: A relatively quick weapon that lets you fulfill your dreams of being a samurai. Has a "charge up the gauge" playstyle, with a very powerful dodge+counterattack move that is borderline OP when used well.
Sword and Shield: It slices, it dices, it slashes, it bashes. One of the most versatile weapons, you can stun enemies, do aerial attacks and use items with your weapon out, all whilst performing rapid attacks against the enemy.
Dual Blades: Unleash your inner Naruto as you run around slicing at a monster's ankles and shanking them until they fall over. Involves a lot of energy management and filling up a gauge. No real defensive abilities outside of being fast.
Hammer: 1) Smash enemy in head 2) Knock enemy out 3) Smash enemy in head more. A simple weapon with a simple moveset that does one thing very well: KOing monsters.
Hunting Horn:
A weapon that can support rather than a support weapon, you play songs that buff you and your allies in a similar vein to Invoker from Dota, all whilst beaning monsters over the head with a bagpipe/drum/lyre on a stick.
Lance: The most defensive weapon in the game, with plenty of counterattack opportunities to still deal damage whilst attacking. You can also charge around and turn yourself into a battering ram.
Gunlance: Take lance, take away the counterattacks and replace them with big explosions.
Switch Axe: A big axe that turns into a big sword. Relies on filling a gauge in either mode. Axe mode is relatively mobile, whilst sword mode hits really really hard. You can also jab the sword into monsters, latch on and make the sword explode with the best-feeling button mashing the game has to offer.
Charge Blade: A sword and shield that turns into a big axe. Less mobile than the actual SnS and has a very complex moveset, that involves imbuing your shield with energy and filling up phials to build up power for a really big explosion. Whilst complex, mastering the charge blade will let you fluidly block attacks whilst you attack and also land one of the most satisfying big attacks in the game.
Insect Glaive: The aerial weapon of the game, launch yourself into the air from any surface and zip about whilst the monster flails about below you. The land attacks also hit pretty drat hard. You get an insect buddy that latches onto the monster and extracts monster juice that buffs you, along with generating powder clouds that have fun effects.
Light Bowgun: One of the two types of bowgun, this is the mobile sort that can zip around and rapid-fire certain ammo types whilst planting down mines that provide a significant damage source. Whilst not very powerful, the high mobility and versatility makes up for it. Depending on what ammo types the LBG supports, it can be a sniper rifle, assault rifle, shotgun, flechette gun, elemental gun, grenade launcher, status gun or general support gun.
Heavy Bowgun: The other type of bowgun, this is more like a barely-portable cannon than a regular gun. Has low mobility but is extremely hard hitting, with special ammo that is either an explosive sniper round or a full-on gatling gun depending on the bowgun. Like the LBG, the HBG has a variety of specialities depending on the ammo types supported, with sniper rifles, assault rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers and mortars all viable methods of play.
Bow: The classic ranged weapon, the bow is quite mobile and can hit very hard when played right. Has bottomless quivers and uses coatings to give the arrows special effects like "hit harder" or "blow up". Very useful against long monsters when the dragonpiercer arrow is pulled out.

This small writeup is by no means an exhaustive review of the various weapons, and there are plenty of text and video guides around the internet you can look up for a better explanation. With that said, happy voting, and see you at the next episode.

Chew on that... you overgrown son of a bitch.

I'm torn. I want to vote in a direction that forces you out of your comfort zone, but that leaves us with several good choices to work with. Of course, there's also the hunting horn, even though you say you're good with it. Hunting horn is always a good time. Especially since Rabidredneck has already made a compelling vote.

I'm almost going to match that vote. Max Volume should play the song of her people using her rockin' Hunting Horn. However, I think her partner's name should be Fret.

The Handler is the cause of us going off the ship. Without her curiosity, we would not have additional adventure. Ship's ended up fine, right? I dislike Handler very much already.

Oh don't worry, I tend to practice weapons on my main character if I'm not farming anything important. The competancy rankings are relatively dynamic, depending on how fast I learn how to loving use greatsword.

Yeah book girl is pretty much the best 15-second wonder NPC in the game IMO.

I'll leave the vote up for another day or two, then try to pick out the best combination. So far hunting horn and charge blade are winning with 3 each.

I think it's safe to call the vote done for now. Looks like we will be following the adventures of cool rocker Maxine "Max" Volume. The palico name is a bit more contentious though, but personally, I'm a fan of Mad Manx, her embattled, bitter, cigarette-smoking whiskey-chugging manager. I'll get working on the next episode, where we can expect to murder a whole bunch of monsters. I'll also make a mini-episode showing off Astera, possibly along with a quick introduction to hunting horn moves. If you wanted to see another weapon, don't worry. I'll show them off in due time.

To be fair to the Handler, she probably expected something like a Lagiacrus, and not Godzilla.

Episode 2: Welcome To The Vore Club, In Which We Dance The Jagras Jig

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmOTG5c18_c

Equipment stats and descriptions coming soon!

We finally get to smash some monsters over the head at Max Volume's debut concert! Everything goes swimmingly.

The big monster we fight today is the Great Jagras, a big lizard who just likes to eat things. Like other starter monsters in the series he's not super hard to take down. Maybe I'm just good at the game? Extremely unlikely, as you'll see in the future.

A few things just to start some discussion:
a) If you've played a previous MonHun, how does Great Jagras compare to some of the other starter mons?
b) If you haven't played one before, in honour of our big voresaur, what's your favourite food to devour?
c) Should Max Volume go for fashion, or practicality? (Preferably both :v:)

Wow, the UI in this game is way better than in the only MonHun game I've played, Generations. Especially the shop stuff, where that game gave you a huge list of stuff that you could make and no indication of what equipment was in what set.

Speaking of Generations, the "starter" monster in that game was the Great Maccao. Its deal was that it jumped up on its tail and charged at you, but you could knock it out of that to knock it down for a few seconds. Unfortunately, since I haven't played any of the other games, I can't say what the starting monsters were in those. Sorry.

Oh, and go full-on Fashion. Or rather, anti-fashion; I'd like to see the most ridiculous outfits this game has to offer.

Well, colour me curious about how this game series attracted such a following - I hope watching this will lead me to find out! Not sure how I feel about the characters (except the Meowscular Chef, who is great), but presentation in general has been pretty nifty thus far. I am amused at how your outfit has gone from cosplaying as a member of the Attack on Titan Recon Corps to 'caveman chic', but I'm given to understand that sort of thing is part of the Monster Hunter experience. As for discussion: alas, a) is N/A, as I've never played a Monster Hunter game before, while b) is my mother's palak paneer, and c) has to be fashion, hands down.

My only experience with Monster Hunter has been the 3DS demo, and I wasn’t too thrilled with it. However, I have gotten my fair share of hunting action through Soul Sacrifice and other games :v: World seems fun to play, but I’m forced to wait for the eventual PC release since I don’t have a PS4.

My only complaint is that there aren’t any fist weapons, since that’s my favorite type to play as. Although I guess that’s not a traditional MonHun weapon? Mostly seen sword/lance stuff from previous series.

Always Go For Fashion.

Sadly I'm mostly a fist weapon fan as well. I'd say the closest it gets is dual blades, which I've been playing lately on my main and has been very fun.
