I am an ESL teacher, and the grammar and the phonetics of modal verbs and their contractions certainly have made me a lot of money over the years.

I knew one guy, a salesman at a famous heavy equipment company, who just told me he "Would not use contractions", despite being a pretty proficient speaker.
