Fishing for pike with tip-ups is a lot of fun (gently caress setting them that far apart though), and they're delicious once you know how to deal with their wiry little bones. We always fry pike in boneless fillets but the Russians I know also like pike poached with butter and horseradish. If you watched people ice-fishing for pike and walleye anywhere in the states it would look identical except for maybe the type of tip-ups, every region has its favored designs.

Fishing is fun. You gotta know your state catch regulations but it's one of the most rewarding hobbies. If you do outdoor poo poo like biking or trail hiking it's a perfect match.

I have a friend who is a fishing maniac who fishes all year round. In winter they set up little tents on the ice, drill a hole in it and than sit all night, each in their little tent, drinking vodka and staring into the abyss below.

Yeah if air cant get into the water the fish cant get air, ergo theyre going to try and find a break in the ice. Same reason youll occasionally see fish coming up for air in extremely stagnant or polluted ponds.

Went ice fishing on Lake Winnipeg on the last day of the season and we all got sunburns. That's a friend of a friend's ATV thinger. We can't afford that stuff. Normally I do bring my bike, though.  Real rich dudes just pay someone to fly them out there in a helicopter. This pilot was confused af.  No matter how you go out there, the fishing's sometimes pretty good.  But bring a tow rope, just in case.
