as you can tell, everything is in the news today.

so yes, let’s chat about abortions. Have you had one? Did a partner of yours have one? How much did it cost? Was it a D&C or the pill? Trip report? Ever do clinic defense patient escorting? Do you have questions for people who have had them?

Totally welcome to posting about orgs to support to ensure that you too can have an abortion!

Do note that this isn’t a pro life v pro choice debate space! There’s enough of that pretty much everywhere, this is about talking about abortions because they’re happening! let’s share experiences.

Anyhow, I’ve had one a few years back and it wasn’t a big deal until I took the pill. It was like “what if I had my period but in the span of an hour on a lovely summer day.” It wasn’t painful but like, a deep pressure. And then it all kind of happened, I was 10-12 weeks and no little baby waving back at me in the toilet. I felt physically relieved and then bought some granola and yogurt.

I’ve never had one in the US but here it was really to the point, sterile and clinical from booking the day to getting the pills and going home, and the aftercare a few days later. It wasn’t even that weird cozy vaguely empowering gyno vibe and frankly I preferred that. I’ve known since I was fourteen that an abortion really wasn’t going to “affect” me and if I needed one, just get it? Like I knew logistically it’d be annoying, but not some afternoon special poo poo.

I also did some patient escorting in college, and Christ, the only thing I couldn’t get out of my head as to where you get big placards of mutilated anything printed and people are just like “yes very normal”. And then to drive around in a dingy Winnebago covered in what looks like bootleg cannibal corpse album covers like to target afterwards nbd.

Not that kind of escorting

Another thing that did strike me is how often they’d get pissy at women going in for like a Pap smear or some other trivial poo poo. Like loving assuming a woman’s clinic is just a D+C Fetus Factory nonstop kind of made me real pissed because if I was getting a gyn visit, with the horrific cervical scrape, and some schnook was yelling at me I’d lose it.

I have never had an abortion in part because I am not a uterus-haver but I have known people that did and may have had an SO technically have one. They used celery seed tea to "jumpstart" a late period. Yes, I realize this is not recommended and is risky but it was decades ago and also hooray for trying to get medical care when you don't have money or insurance in the USA

Also this is a potentially very good thread and anyone trying to gently caress it up will be dealt with harshly so if you don't want to participate in good faith please just don't post

I would really like to start doing escort volunteering. One of the few things I'm really good at is keeping my cool in super tense and difficult situations (I'm a basket of nerves otherwise, go figure) and I think I would have the right temperament for walking people to and from the clinic and keeping them occupied with light conversation while total psychopaths try and intimidate them.

How many hours a week did you escort for OP. I have a pretty busy schedule but Id be happy to even start doing the odd Saturday here and there to dip my toes in

I was in college so I did a day a week for the most part. Maybe for six hours each? See if you can do a day with someone you know for the first time if protesters are real common

I mean let’s think about the men here. Men can’t even get an abortion! People want equality but when it comes down to it 50% of the population still can’t get abortions. You guys are out there fighting for your post-natal abortion poo poo, if liberals had it they’re way women would be able to abort a 20 year old man, but if a man wants to get an emotional support abortion it’s all “oooohh nooo that’s too crazy, that’s too progressive, we don’t have the facilities to accommodate that request”. Well let me tell you, the FATCATS don’t want men getting abortions, unless it’s aborting their ideals, but the MEN will show them they can do ANYTHING a woman can. :colbert:

My grandmother found out she was pregnant when her husband had cancer. She decided that four kids would be too many kids, especially with a sick husband who would be unable to help, and she had to forge her husband's signature to get her abortion approved. This occurred in 1979/1980, I'm not sure.

I went Dutch on an abortion about 20 years ago. We agreed that we were both being irresponsible; and split the cost ($400 total). The thing that surprised me the most is how long we were in the clinic; it took about five hours total. I wasn't allowed in the room where it happened; so I was just in the waiting room the whole time.

She was pretty bummed out about the whole thing (completely understandable) and kinda ghosted me after a couple of weeks. We were only dating for about three months.

About eight months later, we were having a Super Bowl party at my house and she and her cousin show up unannounced to see if I'm still living there and if she could come to the party. My new girlfriend (now wife) was with me at the time so it was extra awkward. The ex was pretty drunk and was asked to leave by my roommate's girlfriend after thirty minutes and I've never seen or heard from her since.

All in all, A+ would abort again, I believe it was the correct decision considering our ages (we were both 21) and the fact that she was kind of a mess and would have not been the kind of person I wanted to be attached to for the rest of my life.

I'm not directing this post at you, neato burrito, but it did remind me to say -- I hate this whole idea/culture even OUTSIDE of religious circles that a woman needs to have a "reason" to have an abortion. Oh, the pregnancy/impending childbirth would be life-threatening? Abortion is okay. Oh, she doesn't have her poo poo together? Abortion is okay. Oh, she was raped? Abortion is okay. (Actually, when I was 12 I asked a youth minister if he thought that a pre-teen/teenage rape victim should get an abortion, and he said no, because the pregnancy was God's will. :gonk: )

I'm 34, financially and emotionally stable, with my own apartment & a supportive and loving family, and if I have an abortion, it's going to be because I don't want any drat kids.

this is basically why i am here tbh. a lot of my friends are this persons friend or have been or could be. the justified fear and sadness and all those feelings are just things that i would love to know how to help mitigate more

i've found a lotttt of value of just listening to my women friends discuss & educate on these and probably literally every other topic, sometimes i even learn things which i take back to people without that kind of social group and share the information and its helped them.

separately i do have functional male equipment and i also date people that these rights are crucial for and i genuinely do not understand how i am supposed to profess love or respect for somebody while having stood by and done literally nothing to educate myself and put some positive movement towards healthy change & views

For people who think abortion is murder, this is the only logical conclusion. You wouldn't murder a child just because someone else assaulted their mom. Abortion laws that carve out exceptions for rape are a dead giveaway that they're not about protecting fetuses, they're about punishing women.

Also, the god's will argument is funny, because if you ask the same person why bad things happen to good people, they will probably tell you that the lord works in mysterious ways and it's all part of the plan, you just need to have faith. But that also means if someone gets an abortion then it was part of the plan, and therefore not against god's will (unless god is not omnipotent and isn't a 4d chess master).

i would

if it was growing inside of me and i didnt want it :)

its pretty much how i feel like i have to feel if people are going to sit there and debate what life or a child is

so im willing to sacrifice the child for the sake of the patient in 100% of cases

i suppose thats pretty much the trap, really

in this case, I meant an actual born and living child. guess I should've made that distinction clear, but most pro-lifers will claim that a fetus is equivalent to an already born human from the moment of conception.

this is why i wanted to add what i said tbh i didnt think you were being bad about it or whatever its just such an important thing because, like internally, this has never been any more of my business than how somebody handles a cold, unless they want to share specific facets of it with me in which case i will be involved in those.
