We need a character so let's begin with a world. I will be using the sci-fi variant of the Mythras system, M-space, for this experiment, borrowing from a WH40K supplement someone made for BRP. We will be playing a "normal" human from a:

a) Death World
A planet on which everything that "walks, flaps or just sits and grows" is evolved to kill human (and other) settlers and explorers.

b) Void-born
The character has been born and raised on a starship. Perhaps several generations of the family are part of the same crew.

c) Forge World
A planet controlled by the Adeptus Mechanicus where the Omnissiah rules all.

d) Hive World
A planetspanning city world, with immense spired cities separated by polluted wastelands.

e) Imperial World
Most planets are Imperial Worlds, where life continues, surveyed by the God Emperor and his servants.

f) Noble Born
The character has been born to a life of privilege and wealth.

g) Research Station
Small, self-sustained communities on newly discovered planets.

h) Feral World
Planets which have degenerated to Stone Age levels of society and technology.

i) Mediaeval World
Planets which have degenerated to Mediaeval levels of society and technology.

j) Paradise Planet
Beautiful, unspoiled holiday worlds for the rich and shameless.

k) Agri World
Planets given over to massive agricultural production, where most food is shipped offplanet.

l) Wasteland
Whether an Ork homeworld or a recently conquered Imperial, Tau, Eldar (or other alien species) world, most Orkheld worlds degenerate into this state. Ruined cities, vast tracts of desert, badlands and ramshackle Ork towns mar the landscape.

m) Eldar Exodite World
A curious mix of agricultural land, unspoiled paradise zones and naturallyoccurring wilderness areas, Eldar Exodite worlds hark back to an ancient time where life was simple.

Reth.

quote:

Historically, the Imperial Pleasure World of Reth has been entirely dependent upon its reputation as a paradise world. Consisting largely of a vast archipelago of thousands of golden islands scattered across a shallow, warm, turquoise sea, its climate and environment are said to be perfect for soothing and rejuvenating the tired and troubled mind. For over a thousand standard years, the planet's hereditary monarchs traded off this reputation, until the de Caul family staged a successful coup two centuries ago. The de Cauls, a mid-ranking clan of Imperial nobles, brought a new and more severe interpretation of the Imperial Cult to the laid-back and pleasure-loving planet.

Now, whilst it retains (to some extent) its status as a favoured destination for senior Adeptus Terra functionaries and Imperial nobles, it also boasts a small, yet influential, complex for the treatment of mental disorders operated by the Orders Hospitaller of the Adepta Sororitas. This facility, the Asylum of Saint Vero, based on Reth's third largest island, treats over a million inmates, all suffering from a variety of mental illnesses. It is a conglomeration of hospitals, clinics and shrines maintained by the dutiful and dedicated sisters.

Disquieting rumours persist that many of the unfortunate patients of the St. Vero asylum are in fact psykers brought to the planet for reasons unknown. The Inquisition has, on occasion, sent its own most troubled members to a secret bunker, known as the Chapel of Blessed Peace, sited below the asylum and protected by psychic hexagrammatic wards, silver seals of great potency and a special detachment of Inquisitorial Storm Troopers of ancient charter. Many valued Imperial servants whose talents are still deemed useful to the Imperium, are sent to Reth for a period of recuperation, and in some cases, mind-cleansing.

j) Paradise Planet
Beautiful, unspoiled holiday worlds for the rich and shameless.
Characteristics: +1D4 APP, -1D4 STR
Skills: Perform (player's choice) at CHAx5%
Edge: Secret Stash. The character has bought, stolen, bribed or found one valuable item, chosen from the following list: 1D3 bottles of highquality amasec; 1D3 doses of obscura (a drug); a venom ring; two sets of fine quality clothing.

(I'm actually not that educated on the lore of 40K so please forgive me if this or other things have appeared in books and I end up treading on it)

And so Stavros Corvasian is born:

quote:

Action Points: 2 (everyone gets 2 actions in combat)

POW: 3d6 11
CHA + 1d4: 10+1d4 11 (same error)
INT: 2d6+6 13
SIZ: 2d6+6 14

Damage Modifier (STR+SIZ): +0
Experience Modifier (CHA): +1
Healing Rate (CON): 3HP

HP By location (CON+SIZ)

Each Arm: 5
Head: 6

Luck Points (POW): 2 (Can reroll/swap d100 digits, mitigate damage, gain an action point)
Initiative(AVG of INT+DEX): 13
Movement: 6 meters

Next, what career did our boy pursue, or what life was he born into? After choosing this I will roll our we will have our culture and career which will give us a selection of normal and professional skills to choose from and then we will roll on the Life Paths to see how growing up on Reth has affected him.

A) Agent (Imperial Inquisition)
B) Bounty Hunter
C) Criminal
D) Detective (Arbites Senior)
E) Diplomat (Imperial Envoy)
F) Entertainer
G) Engineer (Cogitator Technician)
H) Gambler
I) Journalist (Remembrancer)
J) Law Enforcement (Arbites Patrolman)

P) Priest (Adeptus Ministorum)
Q) Scholar (Scribe)
R) Scientist (Mechanicus Tertius)
S) Soldier (Astra Militarum Guardsman)

N We are born to the Imperium, steeped in its holy bloodlines.

We own two sets of fine quality clothing -- one can hardly traverse the halls of power wearing the rags of mere commoners.

Although all of the truly dangerous beasts of the islands and seas were long since driven extinct by Reth's previous masters, there yet exist some cunning prey that offer a bored noble sufficient challenge at the ancient pastime, the game of the hunt.

Glory to the Machine God, The Omnissiah, and the Motive Force! Time to join the Adeptus Mechanicus.

So we have Mech-Wright Stavros Corvasian. This is where the voting becomes a bit more involved. We need 6 skills from the standard lists and 6 skills from the professional skills. Then prioritise each set of 6, one at level A, two at level B, three at level C. The two Level A skills will get +40%, the two Level B skills will get +30%, the three level C skills will get +20%. I'll assume he has a "Combat Style" that covers his staff, knife, and las pistol at level A and he has "Acting" from his Homeworld which he uses for Religious Plays.

I think the names are fairly self expanatory but have added a few notes in brackets and you can ask if you'd like clarification.

Choose 6 from standard skills and prioritise 1 level A, 2 level B, 3 level C [This is the current base skill]
Engineer Standard Skills
Brawn [23] (raw physical strength)
Drive [24]
Endurance [30]
Influence [22] (persuasion)
Locale [26] (local flora, fauna, environment)
Willpower [22]

Reth Standard Skills
Swim [24]
Boating [24] (up to a small yacht)
Insight [24]
Pilot (Submersibles) [26]

Already Gained from Career:
Combat Style (Tech Priest) [62]

Choose 6 from standard skills and prioritise 1 level A, 2 level B, 3 level C [Base skill only factors in here on chosen skills. Non chosen skills are effectively 0%]
Engineer Professional Skills
Computers [26]
Craft (any) [26]
Forbidden Knowledge (Adeptus Mechanicus) [26] (I think we can assume your character is competent with general knowledge of the Adeptus Mechanicus)
Engineering [26] (This is large scale construction so like architecture and civil engineering)
Electronics [26]
Gambling [24]
Mechanics [26]

Reth Professional Skills
Commerce [24]
Courtesy [24]
Culture (other world than Reth or other fraternity than the Tech Priests) [26]
Musicianship [24]
Seamanship [28] (similar to boating but for much larger vessels)
Streetwise [22]

Already Gained from Culture:
Acting [62]

Amasec: 1d3 2
Starting Gear: 2 Bottles of Amasec, metal staff, las pistol and 1 charge pack, las carbine and 1 charge pack, knife, flak vest, glow lamp, data-slate Mechanicus robes and vestments (Good Quality Clothing,) 1d10 spare parts (power cells, wires, chronometers etc), vial of sacred Machine Oil

We also need to decide who Stavros "works for." So does he begin his career:

Quaddisar Palace Cruise Ship and Casino: Stavros could have been involved in maintaining and innovating the gambling machines, systems, and security measures that are integral to the casino's operation.

Orders Hospitaller of the Adepta Sororitas: Stavros could have been responsible for managing and maintaining the complex medical machinery and technologies of the facility, gaining an understanding of biological systems and cybernetic implants.

Planetary Defence Force (PDF): Despite being a pleasure world, Reth must still maintain at least a nominal defense force. Stavros could have extensive hands-on experience with a range of weaponry, shields, and communication equipment, and it could have exposed him to the harsh realities of conflict.

Write in

Once we decide on this I'll start rolling life paths, maybe try and do a vignette for each stage in his development?

Votes open until tomorrow, this time since the topics that are mixed I'll go with my gut about whether to roll or accept a simple majority.

Alright, I decided to simplify things a bit to help integrating the two votes. Decided to amalgamate Drive/Boating (since this is a waterworld I think it makes sense as people are probably as competent on average on water as on land). Then I questioned whether we really need to have electronics/computers/mechanics and so decided them to a Tech-Priest skill as I imagine a tech Priest should be competent with all 3.

This leaves us with:

Standard:
Level A
Endurance [70]

Level B
Influence [52]
Willpower [52]

Level C
Boat/Drive [44]
Brawn [43]
Locale [46]

Professional:
Level A
Forbidden Knowledge (Adeptus Mechanicus) [66]

Level B
Tech-Priest [56]
Insight [54]

Level C
Commerce [44]
Culture (Adepta Sororitas [46]
Streetwise [42]

Next I'll work on our life-path. We also need to think about what exactly is the Forbidden Knowledge we have from the Adeptus Mechanicus. Obviously we can use the skill to roll when we encounter weird things related to Adeptus Mechanicus but we probably have some area of research/experimentation that has led us to seek out Forbidden Knowledge in the first place. Write ins welcome!

BraveLittleToaster

Did you mean to put Insight alongside the professional skills when it's a standard one?

Apocron
Dec 5, 2005
No, you're right, that's an error. So if I switch insight up we lose locale.

So then

Standard:
Level A
Endurance [70]

Level B
Influence [52]
Willpower [52]

Level C
Boat/Drive [44]
Brawn [43]
Insight [44]

Then we get one more professional pick from this list:

Craft (any) [26]
Gambling [24]
Courtesy [24]
Musicianship [24]
Seamanship [28] (similar to boating but for much larger vessels)

What last skill do we want?

Ok, now let's discuss Stavros's background. Starting with his childhood and how he was accepted into Adeptus Mechanicus training. Boost will either give an existing skill [+10%] or give access to a new skill. There will also be some bonus points able to be used on any standard skills or any attained professional skills

A) Child of Tech-Priest Settlers: Stavros was born to a group of Tech-Priests from Mars who were on looking to establish a monastery. The group had chosen Reth, with its lush landscapes and tranquility, as their place of retreat and meditation. Stavros's childhood was idyllic in scenery but rigorous in discipline. Surrounded by the wonders of advanced technology, Stavros was introduced to the mysteries of the Omnissiah at a young age. Despite the pleasure-seeking ethos of Reth, his parents made sure he understood the sanctity and intricacies of machinery. His talents were recognized by a high-ranking member of the Adeptus Mechanicus who was visiting Reth for respite. He was then sent on pilgrimage to Mars for official training.

Boost 'Knowledge (Imperial Cult)' skill due to the intense training in the sanctity and intricacies of Emperor Worship from his parents.
Boost 'Craft' skill as his upbringing was filled with handling and understanding complex machinery and technology. (choose either cybernetics which are implants or mechanicus devices which are things like servo-skulls)

Gain NPC Contact: Tech-Priest Dominus Silvius, the high-ranking member of the Adeptus Mechanicus who recognized Stavros's talent and arranged his training on Mars. Silvius keeps a distant but watchful eye on Stavros's progress as one of the faculty of the Academy on Mars.

B) Born to Hedonistic Nobility: Stavros was born into a wealthy and influential noble family on Reth that prided itself on its hedonism and excess. As a child, he was surrounded by lavish parties, intrigue, and political machinations. But he found solace in the companionship of his family's servitors and the beauty of machinery. He taught himself the basics of Tech-Priesthood, repairing and enhancing the family's mechanical servants. During a visit from an Adeptus Mechanicus delegation, he was discovered and accepted for training on Mars due to his natural aptitude.

Boost 'Courtesy' skill, as he was born into a noble family and was exposed to high society manners and etiquette.
Boost 'Bureaucracy' skill, having navigated and survived the intrigue and political machinations of his family and noble life on Reth.

Gain NPC Contact: Lady Callidora de Caul, a noblewoman from the rival family who currently rules the planet harbors a strange respect for Stavros due to his technical prowess and integrity and aided with his breaking away from his family to train on Mars. That or she helped him to undermine the Corvasian family. Despite their family enmity, she might prove a useful ally in the future.

C) Orphaned Scavenger: Stavros was born to a poor family that lived on the fringes of Reth's society. Orphaned at a young age, he survived by scavenging and repairing broken technology able to meet his bodily needs thanks to the charitable activities of the Adepta Sororitas Hospital. Over time, he developed a reputation as a gifted tinkerer. His skills caught the attention of Sister Hospitaller Octavia, who saw the spark of the Omnissiah in the boy and introduced him to a visitng tech-priest who took him back with him to the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars.

Boost 'Survival/Track' skill, honed by a tough life of scavenging on the fringes of society.
Boost 'Lockpicking/Sleight of Hand' skill, a necessary talent developed during his survival years.

NPC Contact: Sister Hospitaller Octavia of the Adepta Sororitas, who ran the charitable hospital where Stavros used to go to meet his bodily needs. Over time, she came to admire his resilience and spirit. She remains a staunch ally and mentor for Stavros.
