Holy poo poo, dude. 0:58. Seriously epic stuff. This makes me want to punch a dragon in the face or something. You've left yourself some obvious verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure before it all falls off into that bridge section at like 2:40. I think given the absence of vocals, you're gonna need to add something to give it progression in the second verse/chorus. Lead guitar part? I'm asking you to shred further, my friend. That should be the most welcome feedback you ever receive.

Obviously, the moment when everything drops back in is solid as gently caress, but I'm sure you already know that. The fadeout doesn't feel great to me, though. Write yourself a quick little ending lick and go out with a nice, crisp bang.

Dear dudes,

My band put out our EP finally. Two of the tracks on it ("Tunnels" and "Spin") are ones that I posted initial sketches of in this thread and got some good feedback on. Thanks for the help. File this one under success stories?

This song is making my studio monitor vibrate my loving desk. It feels really clean and easy to digest even though the pace is brutal. I really like your mixing, and it is gonna sound killer when you get some vocals in there. I keep expecting you to use a F power chord to resolve back into your E chugging on your initial riff, and you use a F# instead. In fact, there's a lot of places where a more minor chord sounded natural and then you stuck that major note in there instead. When 0:58 rolls around it makes for a really bright and triumphant kind of sound that i dig a lot.

I wrote just this part originally for the ADD poo poo that the lounge just did, but a friend of mine liked it and now we're considering expanding it into a whole song. I redid the lead parts and metronomed it out to polish it a bit more. When i wrote it I had 4 bars of solo guitar, followed by a slow build up while the lead goes and has fun. My friend on the other hand is a bit new to drums, and maybe missed my general vibes  : https://soundcloud.com/torrentialfire/jsww-end-of-the-line
He just got his electric drum set like this year, so he's pretty new to drums. Hopefully if I keep working with him he'll improve steadily and we can actually take some of these ideas all the way. I got kind of tired of using a synth for drums.

I'ma like this. Both versions. They do that cool classic rock thing I can never do but love all the same. Reminds me of a slow VH styled song. I actually dig the drums. It's too easy to fall into the trap of "metal = fast drums" because sometimes you need to groove, right? Anyway, make that a full song. It's groovy. I can dig the idea of not liking synth drums. I can never get them sounding right.

I finally have some content. Here are two covers I did while getting drunk, so don't expect anything good. Especially vocals.

The first isn't really a sketch, it's a cover of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. But it's not a finished piece so gently caress it, it's a sketch.

The second I did while I was quite drunk, so I had to do several takes of the guitar and enough takes of the vocals that I said "gently caress it, that'll do". The lyrics are complete placeholders. I do not like them at all. The vocal style is kinda what I'm going for, but I'd rather a bit more energy.

I like the initial melody for Summer Hare; I'd like to hear you go back to it as another instrument takes lead halfway through the song; maybe a violin? You could hit a really strong 2nd verse/chorus or just use that as the high point if you want.

I'm..not even really sure what this is. 7/8 time, delay/swell effects, using my trem to get a slight microtone feel...I kind of want to get some melodic head voice in there, and some sort of exotic percussion...maybe bongos? I dunno.

I'd forgotten how much fun it was to do octave grooves with a bass though. It's a ton of fun. Power chords sounds icky with that instrument so adding the octave as a piece of the rhythm adds a lot of depth to a bass line imo

I dug the Crazy cover, but I really wanted to say I really like the song Seasick you have on your soundcloud page.

I've decided to get into recording music again after a few years of not doing any. Went through some of the last stuff I recorded to see if I still liked any of it, and decided to stick this up on soundcloud since it's probably my favorite thing I have done. Would love some thoughts on it.

I did everything on an old electric organ for the most part, including the drums which are just one of the loops the thing had. There is also a ukulele going on, and some claves and finger cymbals i recorded.

I think this has quite a lot of promise. Once it got going it reminded me a lot of Mum.

If I could pick out one thing that didn't work for me I think this would be much nicer if you found a way to make the drum loop sound more organic. The sameyness is a bit jarring after a while. Maybe some variation in the pattern and something to make it sound less synthesized and more fitting with the rest of the track's other elements.

-----

I got some really good reactions last time I posted up a black metal track I've been working on so here's one from the same EP with vocals this time. I'm particularly interested to hear what you guys think of the vocal mixing as I went back and forth on the verse vocal level on this one.

Inspiration for the vocal style was basically Abbath from Immortal. Instrumentally it's a black metal / thrash hybrid. I think.

The bass is really groovy and the stand out of this I think. It's a funky riff though. The guitar sounds a little raspy/thin though. A lot of high end, not much mids from my view. It's got a nice feel to it though, a sort of wavey sound.

I really like this. It sounds like the intro to an awesome album, but is a great song in general. The repetitive lines are almost hypnotic. Very relaxing. Crossfade it to the next track You do! The only thing I can really critique is the same as Nigel where the drums stand out. Maybe cause it's a really common pattern?

I'd comment on Nigel's but I'm not a thrash/black metal fan really so I can't help, sorry! The vocals do suit the instruments though? Reminds me of Pantera/Metallica, which I guess is thrash. So sounds good enough to me!

Yeah, the melody I came up with long ago and it's stuck around. Really not a fan of that version I've decided. I am afraid to sing louder cause I live very close to people. I guess I should take some lessons first and then try again.

Funny that you mentioned that. I was digging through my old stuff and found Seasick and I still like it. So I started working with it. It's actually the first "song" I ever put together even though it's a simple progression. So I reworked it and did some vocals:

The vocals are really quiet, but I like the cadence of them. I'm not great at mixing but I think there is too much low-end on them? Louder in the mix and with some sort of effects over them would fix it up. I think it might not even be a 'make it louder in the mix' issue, and maybe more of a sing it louder first. I find sometimes if I sing to quiet into the mic I get more low end than if I was belting it. So maybe that will fix that issue, too. Sounds like a lot of critiquing, but I liked it!

Anyhow, here is me, no vocals yet, I haven't decided where I want to take it. I've been listening to a lot of minimal/post-dubstep, so that's what I was feeling at the time, but it seems like it has morphed into almost hip-hop.

Yo your mix slays dude; once they get going I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a jazz song off a record. IMO some of the drums could be -slightly- more present in the mix but its already way better sounding than most of the poo poo we post in this thread.

Very cool. Is "White Claudia" supposed to be part of it? Doesn't really seem to fit. I really like the theme of guitar taking you around ambient spaces - the guitar alone sounds great too but I think a different pad is an easy way to convey to a dummy like me "we're somewhere different".

Right now we're both basically just throwing poo poo at the wall to see what sticks, or "Here's a riff I wrote, what do you think" kind of thing. "White Claudia" was something I wrote that was just a random sort of idea I came up with one afternoon.

"In the Presence of" was my friend's guitar and keys work
"Quiet One" is all his guitar work
"Hiding Place" he wrote the guitar and I threw the keys on top
"White Claudia" and "Dying Light" I wrote, and admittedly my guitar work isn't great as I've really only been playing a little over a year or so.

The keyboards stuff I find much easier because I can just load up whatever pad I want, mess around with it and go "That sounds good" and build from there, where as with guitar I don't really have that luxury or the theory stuff to know "This chord goes with this chord"

Thanks for the feedback! I've always felt vocals were the weakest part of my music. But I will try and improve with your advice! We're probably setting up a ghetto rehearsal/demo recording space in the near future, so hopefully I'll be able to belt it!

I don't know what you'd call Outside (I am terrible with genres) but it's one of my favourite styles of electronic music. Nice and ambient-ish but with a cool melody. Make an album of that (Or an EP), put it on Bandcamp and let me know. I think it doesn't require anything heavy but it'd be cool if the vocals provided a melody on top. Ooh, maybe a build up and crescendo with them! That'd be cool. If you do hip hop vocals then I think it should be chilled and laid back to match. This is not a lot of good advice!

I realise these are only demos but the plinky guitar is killing me. It almost sounds like a ukelele, and doesn't match the feel at all! Aside from that, I like the doomy feel and Quiet One especially could be good with some heavy, mildly distorted guitars layered. Or, transition Quiet One to Hiding Place as one song. Once the synths do a bar or two on Hiding Place, then put in the heavy. If you want to go that way, that is. White Claudia seems really out of place. I'm not a fan of that one. Dying Light is nice though. Don't go distorted with that. Just keep it melancholic and it'd be a great closer.

I recorded a thing today. I borrowed my bassist's Tera Echo and said I'd see what I can do with it. I picked a key (G#m in this case) and recorded two simple loops and decided to restrict my noodling to first position, though I broke that a few times. The lead was done in one take. So were the loops actually, so they might be a little off. It's mainly practice for the one riff I repeat. Here it is!

Edit: I made a slightly more songified version of this idea. This be it. It's a far more condensed version. I think I might extend it a few more bars so I can get some noodly fun going on. Maybe get some bass and vocals happening too.

Edit x2: Figure I might as well add on some more tracks I've been messing with. My old riff/song thing called Valium makes its return with bass added by my friend. Here's the raw track and here it is after I did some mixing and EQing (though I'm not very knowledgeable about that). Any tips would be great. I'm not sold on the sound of the distortion for the guitar and will be doing another version with a drum track and my actual amp mic'd (Instead of a pedal run to an interface).

Yo, I really like Valium! It really has a good Nirvana vibe going for it. I think when you switch to the heavier distortion you've got a good idea, but the mix gets really muddy, and you should try to EQ your mids way down for at least one of your instruments; there's just too much competition for that part of your ear and I really have trouble getting the notes out of the song.

Music box is really unnerving; I really like how it's constantly having that lower, single note playing that is begging to be resolved but never is. It sounds like something you'd hear in a horror game, which I guess is the point.

Suffer the children is pretty neat too; something you could consider for making your music more complex, since both of those pieces don't have any progression at all, would be to read the Spectralism thread and try to make your parts different from the use of timbre and volume. I think that this particular kind of music has a -lot- of room for that musical style. Music box especially would really work well, since the idea of a music box repeating a single tune, but it never quite sounding the same way twice is very haunting.

So: I love this track, to be clear. My notes are maybe pretty nitpicky because of the headspace I'm in.

I find the guitars smeary a bit when the drums first come in. The timing, I mean, smeared.

When the first build-up pays off, the guitar timing weirdness gets worse. The attack is not very crisp as a result.

Back to the next chorus, the doubling is really bothering me because the delay between the two tracks on left and right are sooooooooo far apart!

But seriously, this is a rad track and I love it.

As for me, welp, it finally happened: I hit peak electro / dance. Here is the track: https://soundcloud.com/mattwalters/ympektid-the-end-is-near-get-your-love-and-get-out

Literally the only thing I've ever recorded that I feel compelled to dance to.

edit:

Since nobody has replied / posted in the last week, I'll just add the track I did today: https://soundcloud.com/mattwalters/ympektid-tomorrowland

I think I'm getting the hang of this modular thing.

HOly poo poo that first one has a hell of a beat. I was nodding to it real good without even realizing it. I like the whining sound that hangs out starting around 1 minute. the initial high synth has a bit too much bite imo but that's just a nitpick. Sounds good as gently caress dude! :)

Tomorrowland has some serious SMT vibes going on drat. Your choice of timbre for the synths is awesome dude. I'm also getting some serious GBA era chiptune vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv5Fa3ggCAQ

https://soundcloud.com/jacob-staudt/stormtrooper-mxd It turns out that if you play a D chord without the high F# and use Drop D you activate the Heaviest Guitar Chord. Playing this through a Twin Reverb at full blast was loving incredible. 5 strings and only 2 notes. holy gently caress

I like that technique on something outside of a nylon acoustic.

Here is this chill thing I'm thinking of working on more. Been listening to more relaxing stuff lately and it's seeping into my music. Made with Kontakt & Spire. Keep going or move on?

Like this a lot. Funky as heck with that bass line. Keep going I say. Only thing I would say is that the kick seems really sharp for the kind of laid back track this is. Maybe it's too loud as well?

I just finished a demo for a new song for my black metal project. Needs the vocals and some more instrumentation but it's pretty much there. Let me know what you think. I was going for a Wolves In The Throne Room vibe.

What up, other guy who posts in this thread?

Stormtrooper is awesome to listen to. I really want it to have a multiband distortion across it to give the high notes some sizzle but leave the lows alone.

Skeleton Waltz is very pretty. I can hear Layne Staley singing over it. This is a Very Good Thing.

Holy mother of jesus I love Apnic. This mix is beautiful. The bass maybe could be a little more consistent in volume, but that's a huge nit.

Tell me about your practice schedule / techniques? I really want to be a better guitarist.

Definitely keep going. I want to see where this very, very comfortable ride goes... echoing the note about the kick, maybe a less sharp kick? The thump is ok, but the click is pretty forward.

:catstare: woah.

This is not a genre with which I'm overly familiar, but I find the guitars to be a little brittle (too much high end?) and not enough "layer" to be the big, thick wall I think you maybe want them to be. You may be able to get this effect by doubling the tracks and offseting them by 2-30 milliseconds. I really want the kick to be snappier, thumpier, and more forward in the mix. The drums are almost completely lost in this mix. Again, maybe what you were looking for - I am much more familiar with older metal (ex. Slayer, Sepultura) so that may be the tone I'm wanting to hear.

So. Here's my new jam: stuck neck cut. It is 100% modular with no external effects - EQ, compression and panning only in the DAW. I loving love my modular. I wasn't sure to begin with, and the amount of time it takes to patch something up sometimes feels a little bit oppressive, but god damned if the results aren't worth it every drat time. At least, they feel that way to me. :catdrugs:

I'm glad you like my stuff!

I mostly play about a half hour at home, but I also play 90 minutes a day at work; during both of my breaks and at lunch. I take my classical with me and just sit in a little hallway alcove and play. I just emphasize playing my own music instead of just doing covers, and eventually after hours of noodling i just write music. Nothing really but lots of time on the strings.

You got that classic black metal 'recorded in a cave' sound. Some shrieking vocals would really round it out. I'd like more out of the kick and low register, but that's typically what I want out of black metal in general so you're probably good. Synth in the breakdown is neat too!

Borrowing a different guitar from a friend and my first creative output in a few months turned into https://soundcloud.com/skudmunky/sketch-8-29-15. Electric violin left channel, guitar right channel, bit of fun with a midi controller I made for my Digitech Whammy around the middle of the song.

This is super, super cool. I think the ultra-modulated whammy might be a little overused in the middle section, but maybe I'm just being a dick. Seriously though, this is fantastic, especially the final section. Beautiful textures. Nice work!

So, here's my latest output. This is in no way related to the other music I've posted here; it's basically a sludgy industrial rock song. I am, however, very happy with how it has turned out so far. I'd love some feedback on it though. muzzlestamped promise - mistake - I even recorded vocals for it!

e. if you happened to listen to this in the last 40 minutes, sorry - the mix was awful. I've fixed it. Should have taken a listening break before uploading.

Dude, this is really cool. You have a really good head for structure on this. Kinda vibing radiohead.

The separation of the 2 guitars make it really cool, if you wanted to continue the song ide suggest syncing the 2 parts and changing key or something.

The main groove here is really great - at first I balked at you using the word "metal" but then the full thing kicked in and I really started enjoying it!

But I will say that it's a little fatiguing on the ear to just hear it bounce between two chords the entire time. Maybe find a new chord progression to change to after the solo? Something complementary that can be used as a bridge?

Sounds good to me, I have a more updated version on my hard drive where I do something like that but I'll make it a
more dynamic change for sure.

Thanks man, I've really put a lot of work into building my tones.
Drums are superior drummer:metal factory and I ran each drum mic into a separate channel for some small eqing and panning.

Any suggestions for where the song should head? Extend the change? Go back? New riff? Slow? Fast?

To me the ending you have sounds like it really wants to break down into something slow and full electro kind of sounding, imagine it morphing into something like the start of (specifically from about 1.16):
