I know this is me literally complaining that this Anno is too Anno, but doesn't it seem like there is way more to micromanage and juggle this time around? My attention is constantly being split between what my fleets doing, an expedition, quests, and the perpetual treadmill of building a city on at least 2 old world islands. When the game started asking me to build in the New World it overwhelmed me - it's like, now play a second game just as deep and demanding as the first game but we won't pause the first game and you have to manage them both while competing with AI that will take all the islands and out-build you if you aren't on point.

Some kind of commuter dock so my workforce can freely wander islands would go a long way in making the micromanagement more tolerable. I think this game might be too much for me if some more concessions to usability aren't made.

There is a commuter dock at Tier 4 so I think it isn't available in the open beta? It effectively lets population be a map-wide factor rather than island based.

It's like 1404 with a good chunk of QoL improvements from 2070 and the multiple concurrent map technology from 2205. They even brought back the fuckton of decorations from 1404 AND gave them an actual mechanical bonus even.

Yeah this is the Anno I'd say benefits the most from the ability to run a faction in multiplayer mode. Especially when you get to the new world. I'm definitely gonna have to turn off at least one pirate when doing a sandbox game after launch.

Ships can fire both broadsides independent of each other.

The pirate den has some obnoxious line of sight issues that blocks ships from firing, after sniping off the outer turrets I sailed a fleet in and melted the remainder rather quickly. A lesson to the devs would be if you make the ceasefire cost x2.5 than it did in 1404, and the NPC still demands money when they "surrender", I'm going to murder the pirates every time. I can make a fleet in one third of the time it takes to make 50k. I actually liked the corsairs and the barracudas stole loot instead of destroying ships every time.

Something I like is that there's travel time to dodge cannonballs and less surprisingly, mortar shells, the projectiles are no longer a purely visual effect. I imagine big bertha is a turret that can be built by engineers or investors since there's ship items that reduce damage from it.

The decorations have interactions with entities, that's been missing from anno since 1404. Decorations are lame if there aren't little people waddling over to appreciate them. Speaking of little details, one of my favourite little touches is that the school's clock displays your system time.

Yeah, the way the game handles broadside fire isn't the best, but it's 100x better than 1404's "advance, stop all movement to bring guns to bear, catch back up" stupidity. And each individual shot on the screen being an individual shot in game is cool and a massive game changer. The Anno devs had a combat video where they showed it off how the Ship of the Line is equivalent to the biggest, meanest steam ship if you use it right. The steam ships have slow firing, but powerful cannons on turrets, and then he had a Ship of the Line drive between the the battleships (or whatever they were called) and suddenly it was able to bring all 54 cannons to bear.

And yeah, the best thing is the fact that the cities are so animated. The decorations just add to that, and when you get a festival going, gently caress yeah its party time!

1404 ships turned quickly at least, there have been bunch of times now where ships in 1800 can fire at ships when I micro them to turn about 10° but if I issue an attack order they will refuse to fire until they're in close quarters which is dangerous and a nuisance when you're trying to defeat superior numbers with carefully distributing damage.

I think a lot of people in the thread might recommend 1404, though I really like 2070. (The Scifi near-future, post global warming setting was what actually drew me into the series, not having paid it much attention previously.)
Anno 2205 is very different from 1404/1800/2070 though, with a larger focus on streamlining things and possibly oversimplifying them.
It's a neat game on it's own, but it's not a game that's well liked by the anno crowd.

Also if you look at cd-key sites you could easily pick up 2070 or 2205 with all dlc for around 15-20ish bucks.

https://www.kinguin.net/category/58854/anno-2205-ultimate-edition-uplay-activation-link/
for example.

But if you like Anno 1800, then 2070 would be the most similar one, and more along what you expect. Though 2205 has the same kind of multi-map gameplay as 1800, though across half a dozen maps at the same time, in the late-game.

There were a handful of things where I liked how either 1404 or 2070 did things a little better, but I know I just need to shake that off and take the new game for what it is, especially since some of that stuff was like Venice additions and what not. I'm excited for Tuesday, I kind of stopped right when I got to level 3 to keep that part intact for the full game.

2205 isn't worse exactly, it's just a different game. If you liked the parts it removed, then obviously you'd see it as worse, but personally I was always more into the building than the competition so a truly-solo game was nice. Not that it didn't have its problems though, like the time it took to switch between maps or the lack of meaningful logistics. Or when they added invasions in a patch but not defense buildings so they wound up being just another annoyance to deal with.

So I got a ship mortar from farming graves' ships and it's probably one of the better ship items I've seen other than some epic rarity captains.

Less impressive was this:

A ship item that turns cannons into flamethrowers for a few volleys, -40% damage, -50% range for 10 seconds of 100% increased attack speed is not a good tradeoff, especially if you're fighting against the wind.

I remember getting a mortar or two in the closed beta, they made cleaning out the pirate cove pretty drat easy without taking much in the way of damage, since you could just chill on the backside of the isle and mortar the guns out without being in danger.

I think I've had a pretty good run with the beta; only wish at this point the full game was coming out tomorrow instead of Tuesday now. Looking forward to the later tiers being unlocked and finally having access to steamships. Will be so liberating no longer being at the mercy of the wind - which no matter where you want to go is always blowing in the wrong direction.

Game had pretty solid performance as well, guess those extra weeks paid off as promised. The game ran smoothly for the most part after tweaking the settings and still looked fantastic. Most of the bugs I did run into were related to fire stations for some reason.

Managed to get this once:

Also had fire stations that tried to dispatch nurses and police officers instead of firefighters, and because of that they wouldn't actually fight nearby fires. Hopefully that is resolved with the fixes they've been busy with for the Day 1 Patch.

I went through all the trouble of buying all the shares of an island and then buying out the island which in total cost me over 2,000,000 gold and 100 influence and when you get the island under your control, everything on it gets destroyed. Also, once I had all the shares of the island purchased, the owner declared war on me anyway. Just taking their islands by force is WAY less expensive and far easier to do.
