I'm gonna propose finding a car that fits a lot of stuff but isn't considered a 'supercar', then figuring out what makes it fall short.

My first thought is the Gallardo. No weird doors and not the halo product, just a dressed up copy of a better car.

For clarity, I put in the Duesenberg SSJ. Even the standard J had 265hp, but the SSJ had 400hp, in the mid-1930s.

The fact that only two were made and were owned by Gary Cooper and Clark Gable, who would race each other in them in the canyons, also cements it as a true supercar. Crazy powerful and completely out of reach.

Ah, I think I said, I took a stance of never using the same answer for more than one question.

I went with Duesenberg as I feel they're the earliest car to meet my definition of a supercar being the ultimate, not just in performance, but in the whole package.

And no one said Lotus! Take note, MCM!

I almost put the 959 but went with the F40 and I'm surprised I almost wolfed it. I mean yeah there were nuts cars before it, but the F40 took 'car' to an entirely new level, one that had never been achieved and one that still only rare cars can achieve.

What better car? The R8? The R8 was based off the Gallardo. Audi took what Lamborghini had already developed and made it all vorsprung durch technik, which I guess technically made it better if you're into that sort of thing.

The AC Cobra is not a supercar, it was an already made British roadster that Shelby put a V8 into. Iconic yes, but not a supercar.

Well, so's the GT40.

Jan 23, 2006

Don't you think a supercar should be built from the ground up? I mean yeah the Cobra is an iconic car but it's hardly a feat of engineering or styling. When the Miura came out there was nothing like it, it was a car from outer space, that's what a supercar should be.

I think the actual, real, non-sheep game, defining characteristic that determines supercar status is: does it primarily function, unapologetically, from the factory, as a penis extension?
Not requiring any modification or explanation.
McLaren bunchanumbers? Supercar.
Ford Raptor? Supercar.

That's why I made the distinction. If you had to put your mark on it in the form of a lift kit or farty exhaust, it's not a supercar.
That is to say, it has to already be a supercar before someone gets their grubby mitts on it.

Lots of great first supeecar choices. I chose GT40 based on a photo of it driving on a street with contemporary cars. It was like a spaceship out there. So radically different than a boxy 60s car.

Where it fails is its not really a production car like the Miura or Gullwing Benz. I'd probably chose the Miura given a second chance.

Yeah, I know how much that car is worth.

To be fair, in 1978, $7500 was a not-insignificant amount of cash (a couple grand more than a new Porsche 924 cost at the time).

Not on the same scale, but I passed on a 1972 911 Soft Window Targa for $3200 in the early 1990s. If I could go back in time...

78' 911 for $2500 in 2008/9. That one still frustrates me. But I was working for a (closeted)homophobic jerk that wasn't paying me while also skimming off employee taxes from the fed.
