saying something is bad game design is still very much an opinion though, saying only 'real' artists can comment on art is approaching real gate-keeping rhetoric to me. i think i get what you're getting at but it would be like saying you needed an imdb credit to talk about how ugly army of the dead is

The other thing I don't really understand is the impulse to jump into a conversation between people who like a thing to be like "actually, that thing's bad." Honestly that probably works in reverse as well, like there's little to no value in jumping into an ongoing "thing bad" discussion to try to convince people that thing is, in fact, good, but I do that far more often than I should so I can't exactly judge it too harshly :v:

It's entirely the language of it, I think. Like if you want to talk about what does and doesn't work in a game for you, that's one thing. It's when it gets expressed in language that attempts to be authoritative and objective, with people making proclamations that "this thing I don't like is just plain bad game design and it should never be done" that it starts rubbing me the wrong way and I usually just duck out of the discussion then.

I have no idea why Days Gone gets so much heat around here. Like yeah the characters are goofy, like in all video games ever, but if you actually play the game it's like, made with genuine passion and not just another cookie cutter game, which is ironic of-course because it's an open world zombie game

But like, the devs really put in a good faith effort, almost to a fault. The game is bizarrely long, it's longer than RDR2 and the map ends up being about the same size. It just keeps going far beyond the point you'd think it will, until the last third of the game feels like you're playing the sequel to the first third

if days gone isn't cookie cutter to you what on earth is?

I post a lot of really critical things about games but it's almost always about games I really like. If I'm really into something it's fun for me to think critically about it and speculate about ways it can be improved, things like that. If I don't really like a game that's usually when I just kinda shrug and move on.

Oh yeah same, I know I do lazy hot take posts frequently and wish I was better about it. Hell I wish I was funnier about it too. Want to post in a manner where people think about playing games I like, so we can talk about cool and good and fun and interesting things. Like Anodyne 2.

I really like that class (Mystic Knight) but it takes a ton of time to really ramp up and I think it's only really fun in the later parts of the game. I like to play Assassin, Magick Archer, and Sorcerer on my way there.

I don't have a need to talk about monster hunter good or bad because the fights take way too long to retain my interests, I can't really critique specifics.

I could write an essay on things I'd like to improve about library of ruina, my game of the year, because I've actually played that.

Regretting is an insult to oneself
Buglord
People who get caught up in hating something is very amusing to me. Like seeing people in a game's thread that claim to have returned the game 9 months ago but also post 4+ times a week about how much they hate it is funny. Seeing people come into a game's thread two years after release to post 'game is bad' and see they have pages of posts saying the same thing since day 1 is funny. Don't you dare take this from me.

Oh also, for that matter I hate when games do the whole "the stat ups you gain depend on what class you're playing" thing and Dragon's Dogma has that. Like, I know I could just play the game as whatever class I want and get through it just fine, but there's a voice in the back of my head going "But Arzaac you're wasting stat points why aren't you levelling as Assassin for maximum attack?"
