A round table here started tacking on a service charge to receipts that explicitly says its to pay for the minimum wage increase and its weird how they do that but somehow all the other fast food/pizza places get by without it

Every single one of these line-item surcharges “for labor costs” is an explicitly political act on the part of ownership

You never see a restaurant say “we’re adding a 5% fee to every bill because our rent went up” or because electricity costs went up etc.

its also wage theft, usually, lol

The suit hinges on four points: whether funds collected from the restaurant service fees constitute gratuities; whether the company failed to distribute the total proceeds; if Last Word retained a portion of the fees; and whether the company retained a portion to pay managers or other non-service employees.

Last Word Hospitality encompasses a vast catalog of restaurant properties in California including Found Oyster, Queen St., Barra Santos, and Nossa Caipirinha Bar in Los Angeles; Red Dog Saloon in Pioneertown; and the Copper Room in Yucca Valley, whose employees could be impacted by the suit

There was actually another place here that tacked on an 18% service charge but it was meant to replace tips for the employees and help pay for benefits. It seemed to be an employee led thing and was controversial for some stupid reason. I'd rather them have just raised the price on everything, but I guess it looks better on the menu to have lower prices and small text about the fee.

I have seen local hole-in-the wall burrito places just have a note on the menu that says “due to the rising cost of meat recently, we have raised our prices”

well that's landlords but yes franchise owners are particularly heinous

its also hilariously shortsighted to stiff customers like what, 5 cents of utensils? people trying to order for parties or picnics are going to just order somewhere else. it's like seriously <5 cents. also defacto ff/retail minimum wage was already pretty much $19-20 even before the increase

both groups are full of people who have barely over room temperature IQ and want "passive income" but are too stupid to actually come up with a real business idea so they just buy into either asset appreciation/rent or buying a franchise name. those are the ones who act more on emotion than sound business practices

https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/article/california-pge-fixed-fee-bill-19462609.php posted:

Beginning in early 2026, many of you can expect to see a new $24.15 monthly fixed charge on your utility bill thanks to a recent decision by the California Public Utilities Commission to fundamentally change how you pay for electricity.

And if you’re worried that fixed charges will keep going up, you should be.

Especially after state lawmakers killed AB1999 on Thursday, a proposal authored by Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin, D-Thousand Oaks (Ventura County), that would have established guardrails on how much the new fixed fee can jump in a given year.

And they did so without casting a single “no” vote.

Thanks to an opaque process called the suspense file, a twice-annual rite in which lawmakers on the powerful Appropriations Committees run at warp speed through a list of hundreds of bills, passing or killing them without a word of explanation — and sometimes without even mentioning them at all.

The suspense file is nominally a way for legislators to shelve proposals deemed to be too expensive. Given that California faces an estimated $28 billion deficit, more bills than usual ended up on the cutting room floor this year. The suspense file is also a way for lawmakers to quietly snuff out controversial bills without having to take politically uncomfortable votes.

Typically, the fates of bills on the suspense file are determined behind closed doors. But that wasn’t the case with AB1999.

Of the 668 bills on the Assembly Appropriations Committee’s suspense file, it was the only one to receive a roll-call vote Thursday. According to longtime Sacramento lobbyist Chris Micheli, it was also the only bill for which committee chairperson Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, didn’t have a recommendation as to whether it should pass or not.

Ultimately, only two lawmakers — Democratic Assembly Members Tim Grayson of Concord and Gail Pellerin of Santa Cruz — voted in favor of AB1999. The remaining 13 committee members didn’t vote — including Wicks and Assembly Member Matt Haney, D-San Francisco.

Abstaining from a vote, instead of voting no, is a common way to kill bills in the supermajority-Democratic Legislature. Rather than risk the political fallout of actively voting against proposals authored by their colleagues, Democrats often showcase their doubt or disapproval by remaining silent.

the r2d2 unit should have a duct that you route to your window. i have one because I can't do a window unit and it works fine, not that loud. the important part was getting the duct seal good with my sliding window. the dehumidifier-cooling option is better but then I have to constantly be emptyiing a giant bowl of ac-water and if I forget it overflows. ideally i'd have it setup to some drain pipe but alas, apartment life.

yes i havethe duct. i even extended its height of the plug with plexi that i secure in the window with powerful magnets. glued big ones to one side and put the others on the other side of the track lip thing. looks tight and comes in and out ez. musta been really sober when i concocted that

also have the drip thing leak into a lil plant

bawfuls

Ideally the r2d2 has two ducts that both go to the window, if you use both it will be a good 20% more efficient than just the outlet one.

The noise is the compressor though and there's no way around that short of more expensive/permanent systems that put the compressor outside or otherwise further away, like a minisplit.
