akira, gits,...bladerunner...the thematically interesting cyberpunk stuff is about human consciousness/transcendence

Uh Bladerunner, Akira, and Gits ALL strongly feature themes of out of control military and corporations. The main characters in Akira are all poor schlubs eking it out in lives of petty crime whose glorious ending the manga is creating an anarchist "empire" in the ruins of Tokyo, and Blade Runner is literally about corporate slavery controlling, limiting, and discarding the lives out of the workers.

Netrunner is about automation and its effect on workers, coupled with the crushing conformity social media enables us to enforce on each other and also corps blowing up city blocks to kill one person because humans are cheap but data is valuable. It's one of my favourite settings.

i said thematically interesting for a reason. all that poo poo is in the backdrop and not what anyone on earth cares about when they think of those stories. like akira is not 'about' kaneda and co. having a poor background in the future. they could have been rich corporate stooges working for square-enix-sega's police division who routinely break open the cyberskulls of homeless people and it wouldnt have made a difference. the empire is just, being mad about americans as usual.

it's not that cyberpunk can't have cerebral elements, it's that regardless of if it does or doesn't have those elements the main element ALL cyberpunk shares is the focus on the plight of the common man in the face of power structures that want to use him as a resource. Like, of all the 'punk' genres it's the most overt on 'this is about class struggle, this is about how the status quo is an inherent evil and even if you do it the wrong way bucking it is inherently a noble act'. That's the cyberpunk aesthetic, having a nice philosophical element is gravy (and welcome, like gravy)

You know, "I accidentally sold my best friend and boss' sister into human slavery/sex traffic" isn't a common gently caress up but it sure is a memorable one.

Man, Japanese protagonists are way too forgiving. "You may have sold me into sex slavery and inadvertently cause me to go blind, but you know my brother, so I want to save you!" Like, do they really want me to feel bad for Oda? Cuz I really don't.

And then it's like oh it's being played off as a past mistake he fear cannot be forgiven... but he tried to kill both these peeps four minutes ago. Jeez. And then the trafficking happened less than two years ago! That's super recent. Also, holy poo poo, Makoto's life is suffering. Wait, little asia is just A block away from homeless haven??? why not get, like, a big ol' trashbin or whatever?? you had to get to the park somehow anyway, what's moving down south a few feet compared to reaching that corner of kamurocho???? Blockhouse posted:That's not Japan dude that's just Yakuza for you. The series has its elements it never strays from. Yea Yakuza games are, shockingly, inspired by yakuza films. It's actually really cool because it feels like the Yakuza games are meant to be kinda a blend of old school yakuza movies where the guys were all troubled but honorable men following their code of ethics, and the more modernized 'nah these guys are loving thugs, they're badass thugs but they're not modern samurais with a code'. Like, Kiryu is obviously the former and almost every villain is the latter, and there's so many stories that are just Kiryu being 'ugh I'm getting too old to be doing this poo poo'. Anyway a big thing in those is the whole ~family bonds overcome all~ so yea characters flip in an instant if family connections are found. If you don't like a character INSTANTLY being ok with the fact that some rear end in a top hat tortured/abused/set them up/straight tried to kill them literally a second ago because the guy either was revealed to have a family connection to them or said sorry SUPER HARD then you are not in a good mind for this crazy world.

Obviously, Makoto's secret plan was to bring Oda back to Tachibana alive, so that her brother could beat this piece of poo poo to death himself with his prosthetic hand edit: although Pat's probably super right wrt Kiryu remembering Oda as a hero, because who is Kiryu if not ludicrously forgiving of any old scumbag he comes across? standard owl fucked around with this message at 08:56 on Jun 13, 2017 |
