The artillerists definitely have a pretty sizable radius- the only soviet artillery with radios though are su-76s and the huge howitzers(these count as vehicles). It makes a difference, but you can't really afford it in wide games.

Back to War pack divisions ( divisions from the first game) is coming to the beta tomorrow. Most looks fairly interesting in the context of SD2. Though I am a bit disappointed that they added 3 panzer divisions for Axis and looks like they'll all more or less have a tons of heavy tanks. Hello phase A jagdpanther and KT.

The BTW divisions definitely need a balance pass but once that happens they'll add a lot of much needed variety to the allies, and tbqh they give me the light vehicles i so missed from playing the soviets.

I kind of want to get SD2 because I still play RD every now and then and I could use some improvements to the formula (never played SD1). They still use a lobby system, right? It's going to be dead a month after release, isn't it.

I find it pretty hilarious that I've never seen so many 2nd Guard Tanks (the division that can get the most ISU152). I don't think I've seen a single 2nd Guard Tanks in the past two phase of the beta, now there's at least 2 every game.

I have been getting in between two and three matches a week. There is usually only one lobby to jump into whenever you check, but if you make your own 2v2 or sometimes a 3v3 it fills up inside five minutes. Quality level of play is generally pretty low at US prime time. Game is good, I look forward to them making another World War Three game, because honestly decks are just more fun in Wargame. The deck system in SD2 is miles ahead of SD1, there are actual interesting choices to be made. Honestly the biggest change, from any of the previous games, is the "map feel" of the engagement ranges. It feels like guns and tanks are engaging at much longer ranges than any of the previous games, which kind of also has to do with the default zoom level and the scale of the terrain/units. I actually was super disoriented my first couple of games. Hills are super duper important in this one.

So, the campaign is basically graviteam tactics with a couple of fairly annoying aspects: 1, the 3 battalion limit per battle basically means you have to give up a LOT if you want specialist units in your battle, and 2. the generator tends to throw you onto huge maps compared to the troops you get

This thread being dead over the release date isn't a great sign, but is SD2 worthwhile? I'm most interested in the dynamic campaign stuff because I historically suck at being aggressive enough for MP. Wait for a sale?

I don't love it personally because the AI is annoying to play against, but auto-resolve is also ridiculously terrible in a lot of situation where a tank brigade will fail to defeat police unit that doesn't even have trucks. I am enjoying the MP while the player population is good though.

So I guess sometimes you just have to deal with the fact that you won't be attacking this turn around in the campaign if your units are not already next to the enemy? Because I kinda doubt the efficacy of a single rifle battalion going up against two other battalions plus artillery starting from turn one.

Control Volume posted:Its been three days, how is it now that the player population has died off Well, we were at 800 when I played yesterday, down from 1500 on release. If it can maintain at about 500 players then I think it's pretty good for a niche title like this. Anyhow, I've given the campaign more time, and besides a few run ending bugs I encountered (enemy attacking with invalid divisions, causing the game to become stuck) and still having to fight a bunch of pointless battles (half of the defense battle is just waiting for the enemy to suicide into pak40 and MG bunker until the time limit is reached, there has been a few interesting highlight such as having to make desperate gambit like attacking with 5 Tigers and security troops that doesn't even have truck vs 120 T34s to complete the encirclement of 3 soviet brigades, or holding off IS2 with nothing but French collaborators (once again not having transport), 3 pak36, and a recon wing). As the Soviet once the initial line is breached I was able to use auto resolve a lot more to speed things up and things really start to be more about manovour and encirclement instead of grinding fight against fortified enemy. pedro0930 fucked around with this message at 07:18 on Jun 26, 2019 |

Played a few more games of multiplayer, and thanks to the fact that they finally indicate which artillery pieces have radios in deck building, I have been trying make sure I have some ability to do corrected shot in all of my decks. Put together a Skijager deck that has 105mm with radios, but the real cool part is the infantry commander units also have radios, so you dont need to spend a card on a dedicated spotter unit. The fast response time on the smaller guns, combined with the corrected shot made pushing through, and defending forests so much less of a headache.

Is there anywhere I could find a good (hopefully reasonably comprehensive) guide on how to play these games? I feel like there's some aspect of them that I just am not getting, because I had a lot of trouble finding any real success in SD '44, and am having some of the same issues in number 2.

If it is ANYTHING like Wargame (I haven't played more than 20 minutes of a Steel Division), then the key is recon, and killing your enemy's recon. The whole game is about gaining and denying information and then using your information advantage to select the right units and get kills without being killed back.

I heartily recommend the youtuber VulcanHDGaming I don't think he has any videos on explicitly how to play better, but does a very good job of narrating the replays he posts with what is happening and why he is doing it. Additionally the Division Preview videos do a great job of going through the thought process of which cards to bring and most importantly why the other cards weren't brought. Recon is super important, but it plays out very differently than in Wargame. Although my experiences may not be fully accurate since being a Wargame veteran I always have recon everywhere. Because there are no ATGMs in the game, almost everything can be revealed through moving to contact. The exception to this is unsupported armor, tanks are loving blind and cant see anything. But since you should be pushing with combined arms anyway and the (non) recon infantry do a decent job of spotting. All this being said, always bring recon. Edit: also happy to talk shop if you can think of any specific scenarios where you feel the game isn't going your way. Another thing to do is to play team games on voice and ask a goon for tips!
