I work 16 hours a day basically every day and my job involves a lot of sitting around killing time, so I’ve been debating the idea of taking a cheap guitar and a small amp into work and practicing during my downtime. Problem is, I have no idea how cheap I can go before it would become a detriment to my practicing and I’m not sure what a decent, portable amp would look like. I’m a bass player trying to get better at guitar (honestly you have too many strings) and with bass almost any amp works. I know that’s not quite the case in this situation, and I really don’t think I could get away with using my giant Ampeg. If it''s just noodling at work maybe one of these? https://voxamps.com/en-gb/series/headphone-amps-en-gb/

I mean, that's more or less been Andreas Kisser's setup of choice for his Strats as well, and Sepultura, even without the Cavaleras, has always been crushing it live.

Something dumb just occurred to me: Why the gently caress are some tone-chasers obsessed with Metallica and their 80's guitar tone? Like it's probably a combination of bias (I don't much care about Metallica outside of "Dyers' Eve", my favorite song of them) and a little bit of insomnia talking here, but wasn't their tone decidedly mundane?

I still love the ..And Justice For All tone. Don't you judge me for chasing it!! *goes and chases tone in corner* But seriously, I think that album (which might not be the 80's tone you are referring to) was the first "OMG HEAVY AS gently caress METAL" thing many people got into. It was the gateway drug to earlier Metallica and the other heavy stuff of the time, so I imagine there is a lot of nostalgia involved. At least there is for me!

Fun option: because the bass is gone so you only hear guitars, drums and vocals, which makes the guitar tone seem fuller? Idk, I hate listening to that album because I like bass.

Brawnfire posted:I see a fair number of inexpensive Ibanez basses around here, are they decent enough to start with? Yes, but I recommend playing around with basses in person if possible. You really want to buy something that feels good to play and hold. I ended up with a Gretsch Junior Jet 2 because of how nice it fit me when I tried it at a store, combined with having an awesome tone for a short scale.

Try out a Yamaha TRBX304, they're cheap, very well made for the price, very well and sound great. I'd be getting one myself if I wasn't already on the hook for a bass. And the Gretsch is a fantastic bass too, definitely try that out.

Definitely try out basses before buying, neck dive is real and may be a deal breaker depending on your build/patience for learning to deal with it.

I'm going to ask a question that I probably already know the answer to, but... are there decent acoustic-electric basses? I'm far more of an acoustic person than an electric person, both in terms of play and visual aesthetic, and I've seen some very attractive-looking acoustic basses out there. I'm a soft, folk singer-songwriter so I don't think I'd need anything too punchy, and the option of playing around with it without plugging it in is nice, and I'd be able to plug it into my interface for recording... I don't know, keeping my options open at present.

I've recorded several bands with several types of acoustic/acoustic-electric basses across the years. The Bass that made the biggest impression on me was a relatively cheap Alvarez (AB60CE? It's in the storage rn, don't have it with me atm) that several people used in the span of like 3 years so I got convinced that it did the job well enough that I decided to buy one for the studio and even when I've sold a bunch of my equipment, it's one of the things that survived my 2017 purge. I think you can grab one of 'em somewhere in the 300 range used. Pretty solid little fuckers.

Appreciate all the other posts replying to me as well but I’m on mobile and quoting multiple people is a hassle. As for the guitar, I’m hearing good things about Harley Benton. Would this be a good idea? My home guitar is a Squier so it’s not like I’m playing a $3000 American guitar or anything, but I don’t want to end up playing an early 00s Rogue-tier guitar if that makes sense. Also for basses you really want to make sure the neck and bridge are solid. Everything else is pretty subjective, but those two are definite determiners of quality.

I don't know, keeping my options open at present. You should probably try one out, I dunno if they'd be loud enough for you - especially as accompaniment, but maybe they would! But they don't project or cut through anything like, say, an acoustic guitar - they just don't put out enough energy, especially if you're not playing up the neck Another option is to get a lil' portable bass amp, they can be surprisingly loud (indoors anyway), and use that for an electric bass or to beef up the sound of an electro-acoustic one. And honestly I think instrument designs get way more creative with basses, for some reason - if you see something weird it's way more likely to be a bass. (Same goes for seeing something with a billion knobs) So if it's aesthetic you're going for, there's a lot of options out there

I've tried some in-store and, yeah, they are a bit on the quiet side. Obviously I'd love an upright double-bass but those cost a poo poo ton. But aesthetically speaking, for some reason I just love a hollow/semihollow body. I pulled the trigger on picking up a Firefly for the semi-hollow quality.

Simone Poodoin posted:Just get flats or tapes and never change them imho this is the pro move, i've had the same pair of flats on my main bass for 2 years now and they just keep getting tastier-sounding. jamerson used the same pair for like ten years while playing on 95% of motown's output, and sent the string back to the company when it finally broke and asked for it to be welded back together. the gunk brings the funk (and the bacteria, wash your hands post-playing if you do this)

Or just do what I'm doing and have flats on one bass and roundwounds on another. In the scheme of things bass strings aren't really that expensive unless you're a mad slapper who needs bright steels and gig most nights. It will come down to the tone you want to maintain and you're going to experiment with strings a great deal anyway in the course of finding that out anyway.

You need a lot more wattage for bass too to shift the air and drive the speakers, so even though a bass can sound good through something like my Bluesbreaker you can't get the volume, it craps out way before that
