Texting first to make sure eveyrthing is ok might be a deliberate attempt on Parley's part to game the luck system. If his power can make it so she suddenly pops in on Smitty because of a catastrophe on her end, the opposite could also happen, and Parley could show up just in the nick of time while Smitty is in a trouble. So to avoid that she just texts first to lock in the odds of things being mundane when she arrives.

It is odd that her arms are covered, but it doesn't make particular sense for Parley to have gotten some kind of "upgrade" that Eglamore evidently doesn't, especially as the only "magic" stuff we've seen Eglamore use is the knut thing which is the hallmark of someone else. But drat she looks like she hasn't slept in a while.

French Foreign Legion dudes are kind of hosed up and retired soldiers struggle for years to get out of the wake-up psychosis they engrain in them. I read about a guy who choked out his mother when she shook him, to try and wake him up after he came back. Parley's been through some poo poo.
