Yeah, Climate change is a thing that will make things more difficult

Societally speaking, on the millenia scale, things are more or less as they have always been. Maybe in 50 years we'll have people displaced from places due to sea levels and so on, but we also saw that around the time of the ice age, and several times in between for various reasons, war, disease, famine. How many people fled Europe around the time of the black death?

Like yeah, sure, the ocean will probably be dead by the time I (if I live until I) am 90 years old. As an asthmatic with lung injuries from ventilation as a newborn, I am likely to need a breathing apparatus (actually, I kind of already need one due to covid and the general city pollution bullshit)

Things are going to get worse in like 25 years, but right now they are not drastically more worse than they were 100 years ago, 200 years ago, 500 years ago, or 1500 years ago, when my people were being slaughtered and ran out by the englisc ængli population.

I think people in the West (correctly) feel that something is wrong and try to find something scary out there to justify that feeling. It doesn't matter than this is the safest and most secure place and time ever.

The feeling comes from being labor under capitalism and being somewhere on the gradient of exploited populations. A lot of money is spent trying to keep attention off of that fact and keep the aforementioned feeling attributed to some other boogeyman

edit: no one will ever be able to transfer their consciousness to anything. If it is ever possible to read a brain, writing that information to anything else will be a copy and the dumbshit who thought he was being uploaded to the matrix will sit there dumbfounded, stuck in his regular old body

I can of course only speak for my household, but we're way less "something under capitalism is scary, must answer" and more "woops uncle vova really did it." No, because if we assume a species will not self-annihilate, they have a billion years to survey the galaxy. They will transfer their consciousness to self replicating machines and transcend any need for planets. The idea of faster than light spaceships that actually have biological beings inside them is very naive.

FTL travel may be impossible, but the ships traveling would not have anything resembling current humans on them. They don't need to be FTL, that's just a scifi writing convention.

Ok but here's the thing.

1. They recently re-ran the Drake equation with some adjustments and modern numbers and found out the original result was crap and the new equation describes more or less what we see

2. Issac Arthur, who is a trained physicist, has a video where he goes over the numbers and essentially our solar system can sustain and keep life in O'Neil cylinders until we reach around a googleplex humans, probably more with better space savings and hollowing out planets and expanding into the oort cloud. And even then there would be a fuckload of space.

The thing about this popsci bullshit is that when you actually run the numbers it is all just a lot of conjecture that turns out to be nonsensical in context of our actual, factual knowledge.

alexandriao

UPHO: Futurists suck rear end because it's all conjecture ad reasonable supposition but literally almost none of the futurists throughout human history have been at all close to being correct, even the more pessimistic. One of the reasons is because as a fact of life, any new technology has an amazing downside that hinders its ability to act in the way that we thought it could before we had it.

So all of this AI, space flight, etc. bullshit by self-proclaimed pop sci futurists not only mostly doesn't hold when you run the numbers, but just doesn't stand up on closer inspection when looking at how people thought technology would work in the past.

Examples:

  • Reality: We have antibiotics and antivirals and antifungals and can not only kill a great deal of the tiny lifeforms that destroy us inside out, but also have the technological power to inspect and reason about them.
  • Downside: A lot of disease are either not caused by them, are only partly caused by them, or we cannot diagnose them in time. Use of these cures has a chance of destroying us all by creating tiny lifeforms that are resistant, also often it takes too long to diagnose and applying these treatments is literally "give all the common ones and hope for the best". It also takes us about a decade to do proper inspection and research into just one of these lifeforms and Big Pharma and it's interaction with government is a tangible problem that fucks with all of the above.

  • Reality: We have a global communications network that allows researchers and normal people to share information immediately to the other side of the globe. We can talk to anyone we wish at the touch of a button.
  • Downside: 90% of it is porn, misinformation, and dumb poo poo with some cat photos mixed in. Misinformation and censorship is a huge problem to the point of us having to create systems for people in oppressive regimes to be able to have access to it. And large companies have lobbied for 70 years to restrict distribution and access based on capital. Lack of censorship is such a large problem that misinformation has created a bizzare resurgence of Naziism that wouldn't have been possible decades before.

  • Reality: We went to the moon
  • Downside: It was lifeless and also done only for political point scoring, because the soviets won the space race and got Yuri Gagarin into space first. We barely went back again because there's no obvious capitalist benefit and because moon dust is loving toxic as hell and clings statically to everything, it's also a huge waste of resources considering that we still somehow have starving people due to bad distribution due to capitalism. So it's unlikely a base will be developed there soon and it's unlikely people will be living on the moon within our lifetime.

Futurism is absolutely a joke profession and when scrutinised breaks down into either

a) Well applying common sense to modern tech it would sorta look like...

b) Absurdly generalistic number crunching based on things like estimated total kgs of water ice in the solar system

My favorite failed futurism is all the media that thought people in the future would need violent spectacles to be distracted and entertained.

Like Running Man or Death Race or Roller Ball.

Turns out we just want cheap rear end drama like dancing shows or cooking shows. Or just regular people locked up in a house.

Less silly though, is that we may be heading into a post antibiotic era as bug resistances to existing antibiotics rise and fewer new antibiotics are found. Antibiotic custodianship is becoming important and the thought of people dying from 'minor' infections again is scary.

It's a recorded fact that the week after the time skip has more traffic accidents

I think it's less the hour of sleep and more that people's circadian rhythm is a thing, and we societally give it the middle finger once a year.

The Witcher TV show is bad.

The writing is on the level of a generic YA novel. The visual effects are lovely. The voice Henry Cavill puts on sounds dumb as gently caress. The action scenes are boring and pointless. The episodes are way too long and the narrative is unnecessarily drawn out, seemingly to fill time. Scenes are often very poorly lit so you can't see anything (probably to disguise how bad it looks).

It's far from the worst thing I've watched. I watched three episodes and I feel like I could watch all the rest or not and it would make absolutely no difference to me. I wouldn't object to seeing more of it, but there's no reason for me ever to seek it out. Nothing about it is offensively bad. It's just completely unremarkable in every way and does nothing to justify its own existence.
