i love people who think not using gm crops fights monsanto (monsanto sells most nearly half of the seed used for conventional crops and even organic crops in most of the first world)

I wish there could be some labeling of food that wasn't based on feelgood vibes like 'organic' but real sustainability and humane treatment of animals.

I have a friend who runs a goat farm and she refuses to get the "Certified OrganicTM" certification because, in her words, "I'd rather spend that 30 grand making better cheese" It is really good cheese.

axolotl farmer posted:I buy organic eggs and milk because I hope the animals have been treated better than those that produce the conventional stuff. they haven't in all likelihood. in fact considering organic livestock can never be given antibiotics if they get sick they can often have suffered more. also remember: most organic food is sold by companies that are either fully owned by a huge conventional agricrorp or are joint ventures of multiple conventional agricorps. they love organic because they can charge a ton more money for a lot less product.

fishmech posted:they haven't in all likelihood. in fact considering organic livestock can never be given antibiotics if they get sick they can often have suffered more. not true. organic livestock are given antibiotics if they are actually sick. conventionally farmed livestock are given antibiotics in their feed because it slightly increases the meat yield.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhenish_(format)quote:Rhenish is a newspaper format associated with the Rhineland. Rhenisch format pages measure around 350-360 mm by 510-530mm (in either a horizontal or vertical orientation). A version of Rhenish around half the size is known as "half Rhenish" or "semi-Rhenish". that's the entire article.
