Since I am bad at staying on task working from home and because I was getting sick of using a spreadsheet, I made this: https://frets.terrifi.ca to help practice scales. Features:
  • Choose an instrument (number of strings) and modify the tuning to whatever you like
  • Choose a root and mode/scale from a list, or modify one to whatever you like
  • Metronome (kind of wonky on mobile)
  • No ads and it doesn't try to upsell you
Happy to add whatever other weirdass instruments, tunings, and scales you suggest. Also it's probable I got a scale or two wrong. Learning.

Works for sure in Chrome and Firefox, I dunno about Safari, and most likely not in IE.

I picked up a used Epiphone SG 400 a while back. It's in pretty decent condition, but the 8th fret on the B string has experienced some serious wear- to the point that there is a very defined groove that the string will get caught in if you try to bend. It's pretty much a dead spot on the fretboard for that matter.

My question is- is it possible, or cost effective, to get a single fret replaced on this rather cheap guitar? Is it something you could DIY with a kit from Amazon?

Very cool. The arbitrary tunings fix what was bugging me about guitarmadillo.

My only complaint is that I wish there was a bit more contrast. Both between the active and inactive notes and among the different active notes.

fretwire is pretty much always sold in lengths enough to do an entire guitar, and to do the job you need a soldering iron, fret puller, sanding beam, notched straight edge, deadblow hammer/arbor press/fret press pliers, crowning file, dress file, polishing tool. it's not something that they make a kit for. i mean stewmac probably sells all the tools in a bundle that costs as much as you paid for your guitar

OK, boosted the contrast for ya. Also added a print style so you can print the fretboard without all the junk, if you're into that kind of thing.

So... is replacing a single fret something a guitar shop could/would do? Would it be prohibitively expensive?

Just not a great idea to drop hundreds of bucks on a complete fret dressing for a guitar that’s only worth... well, a couple/few hundred bucks.

This is really helpful - thanks, dude. One idea as I move between the modes: what if you highlighted where the half-steps are on a chromatic scale? Ah, just saw that you do that with the check boxes up top. It would be helpful if there was a box or colour drawn to group the two half steps so they jump out, but I'm just trying to find ideas here. This is going into my practice routine.

Very cool. Audio is glitchy on mobile safari, but for viewing scales, works fine. My guess is using requestAnimationFrame instead of timers would fix it, but then again, I wouldn't worry about it.

How deep is it exactly?
You might be able to get away with a level and re-crown of all the frets for less than replacing one completely. Even if you do replace that one fret you'd still have to level and re-crown them to make sure they are all at the same height anyways.

Leveling can be done with any long flat object and self adhesive sandpaper or spray glue. I use a piece of marble threshold from home depot with a piece of wood epoxied on the back as a handle.

A crowning file is the only real specialty tool you'd need for this you could use a triangle file but that takes skill. The ones stew-mac sells are idiot proof. I've had the one I use for years and it still cuts perfectly fine.

like thumposaurus said even if you just replace the one fret, you'd still need to level and recrown the entire board, which is the most time-consuming and therefore expensive part of having a shop do it

at that point you might as well just refret the whole thing anyway, whether you did it yourself or paid someone to do it

the only reason i didn't suggest just leveling the board is if the divot in the fret's deep enough to catch a string, you'd likely have to remove so much material from sanding that it'd wind up almost unplayable afterward

you could always just get some epoxy and convert it into a fretless guitar :v:

i use a 2' level since it's y'know... level

also it's pretty easy to make a notched straightedge with a regular straightedge and a dremel or a file if you don't value your time

Can you post the song event details on here? I'm on the Discord, but honestly, I prefer to keep my posting on SA. I feel like a Discord's role is to supplement the SA community it's tied to. Like if we want to live chat / share lessons, collaborate, etc. With web forum communities shedding members to social media left and right, I like to keep feeding this place. You'd get more people doing it if the details were here as well.

Yeah, at work I have two Slacks and emails and 83726 other things going on, and when not at work, I try not to be on the computer, so Discord is not something I personally will really ever be on. Obviously those who do use it should enjoy it and it is super cool it exists! But it would also be cool to hear about things like that in the thread too if there is something not real-time we Luddites could join in on.

The challenges were originally just something I decided to do as an activity for the guitar discord so while I've mentioned it a couple times itt I didn't want to be too spammy about it. But thread-based posters are absolutely welcome to join in on them, I'll write up a more detailed post for the upcoming one and try to post reminders periodically!

Also out of extreme boredom you can change the fret markers and scale interval notation. Currently debating whether to have it make noises when you click the notes.
