I just discovered Kid Wave a few weeks ago, and I'm absolutely in loving love with their debut album (which came out last June). They're that sort of fuzzed-out indie poppy shoegazey rock that reminds me of nothing so much as the first Yuck album, or maybe old Lush? (speaking of which, Lush is releasing a new EP in April out of literally loving nowhere, and have a new song out from it which owns) Anyway, Kid Wave are so loving good. Miike Snow's new album is out today (Friday)! I really hope there are songs as good as Cult Logic, In Search Of and Silvia on the new one. The singles so far have been great but 2009-era Miike Snow is on another level.

Guys it's In Search Of. But all their stuff is good. I've only had a chance to listen to the new album once so far, on the walk to work this morning. But it's pretty good. Not a shade on the 2009 album sadly :/ Standouts of the 6 previously unheard tracks: For U (really fun and weird), Over and Over (kinda dark like Black Tin Box, and Miike Snow's most "rock" song). Including all the released tracks my favourites are Ghengis Khan and I Feel The Weight. Hedrigall fucked around with this message at 01:48 on Mar 4, 2016 |

Just finished "iii" and I gotta say I'm a fan. Genghis Khan and Heart of Me are some stellar loving singles, but the rest of it is varied and fun indie-pop. The Charli XCX is really nice (turns out "Sucker" flopping was a good thing, since it led to the SOPHIE collab and now this), and it seems like they've fully settled into a nice niche. My real takeaway? They now have just enough ammunition to have the perfect festival set. I've been dying to see them since I first heard the self-titled, and seven years later I know it'll be a good time. Hopefully they cross paths with RTJ here and there - Heart is Full is pretty boring, tbh, and Mike's verse really livens up the remix.

None of the songs are bad, and most of them have some kind of interesting hook. Confession: when I first heard their 2009 debut album I was completely blasé. I think the only impression I had after the first listen through was "That Horse song was a bit catchy". Took like 3 or 4 listens to appreciate the rest of the songs, and now it's one of my top 5 albums of all time. You never know how you'll feel about this album in a couple of weeks or years.

Hey there, I figured I'd post about the Icelandic musical group which goes by the name of Múm in this thread. They were formed around 1997, and since then have had multiple group members leave and come, changing their musical style frequently. The most known frequent change was around when the lead vocalist and frontman, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir left the group in early 2006. -Their Website (Which appears to be very outdated.) http://www.mum.is And some of their albums Yesterday was Dramatic - Today is OK - 2000 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25YbRHAc_h4 Finally We Are No One - 2002 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chFmFpTc21s And its Icelandic Version, Loksins Erum Við Engin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vN2c9OIVVY Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy - 2007 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oha7A3zwAjU Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know - 2009 (Playlist) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMMlK4muR-E&list=PLTUlTwlsdlFTExWU7kWjlHYwXkF-boDYc

Can we throw in some Spanish-language indie pop? I think they're doing some really interesting things: Dream-poppy sound (more Beach House than MBV) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL-2slEtzHQ Psychedelic downtempo coffeehouse electronica. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQTnMZ5iztc Closer to pure pop, but fits in the current trend of New Wave-era synth sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUCZG09ehLM Edit: One more cause this track owns. 50's-era Rock and roll rhythms with disinterested female vocals are my poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jLYP1RzOPE The Modern Leper fucked around with this message at 03:49 on Mar 8, 2016 |

Here's some Japanese indie-rock? Maybe it's that genre? I don't often share music, but god drat are these guys the best live I've ever been to, and musically talented as gently caress. Fun people too: Backdrop Cinderella (バックドロップシンデレラ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ2k4k3JBM4 (about how lovely Ikebukuro is to live in. Drums are sick) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziQxzOhVR1w (last third of the song just kinda trails off. Different from album version) Uchikubi (打首獄門同好会) I'll throw these guys in too, since they're pretty fun indie-rock/metal hybrid that sings almost exclusively about food. Recently played a one man show in Zepp Tokyo, so getting big: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGL5JUP_zaE (about when someone takes your pudding from the fridge) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuU2bocSfDo (a tribute to Japan's rice being the best in the world) edit: format Queen Gnome fucked around with this message at 21:19 on Mar 8, 2016 |

resident posted:This reminds me of a Spanish Paranoid Android for some reason Haven't checked out the Japanese indie-rock song above, but this is pretty cool. I guess it might be problematic to look to foreign language music as "throwback," but I really dig how a lot of these Spanish-language alternative artists seem to be running with that late 90s-early 2000's, pre-Strokes sound (though that Enfantos song I posted reminds me a lot of the Raveonettes). It's sort of the same way that I dig K-Pop that's explicitly using 90s R&B as a touchstone. Fake EDIT - I remember a few years ago they were running a bunch of ads on MTV claiming that Cafe Tacuba were the "Mexican Radiohead." That claim was not borne out by their sound, as I recall, though you might want to check out the band Zoe if that type of electronic-influenced alt rock is your thing. Real EDIT: I generally like my indie rock with softer edges, but those Backdrop Cinderella tracks go hard. The Modern Leper fucked around with this message at 23:13 on Mar 8, 2016 |

Hi, you should listen to Julien Baker. She recently got a break with a Tiny Desk invitation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tADWPTqR_4A She gets comped to Torres - at least more toward Torres' first self-titled album - for a minimalistic, deeply personal sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmGVIvf8Q6s Some of the best moments from her LP come when she really cuts loose, building almost to a wail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKiAQzYKrVo She recorded most (all?) of this album at 19, and has clearly been through some poo poo, but maintains a pretty upbeat personality in spite of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7ybB4oLqbE So, if you like feeling things while listening to music, she's for you.

The thread title leans more toward a Chvrches/Father John Misty space, but a) I don't live here and b) I've seen grittier stuff discussed. I wouldn't call it punk, but it might be something that a punk thread would also like it. Speaking of NPR-approved: NPR Music's Austin 100 playlist for this year's SXSW festival has been out for a week or so. Haven't found anything that's sparked my passion like last year's list (which included Laura Cantrell, Vince Staples, and a bunch more), but I've only scraped the surface.
