She's blind, so her eyes are always closed. She drew those dots on with a marker so that people wouldn't feel awkward around her, but obviously she doesn't know it doesn't work, and no one wants to be That Guy and say anything.

I'm thinking Forge and the train are both tools. Forge possessed a suit of armor, and the train a full passenger train. Both have been in their respective tools for a long, long time, and so the tools look like their true forms now. Both spirits have become so strong that they no longer need people to suck energy from, and so they act on their own. Meanwhile, the metal they're both made of is stuck in a weird transitional form of spirit metal. Ghostly enough not to be seen by non-spectrals, corporeal enough to be usable for metalworking. That's why Forge left behind his armor when he was cut in half, and why Spender's light attacks did nothing. The armor was his tool.

I think Zack has explicitly said that the Train is a spirit in the form of a train in the same way Doorman is a spirit in the form of a door(man). The Train is metal in the same way Eightfold is paper, which explains why Max's powers work on it. Forge is different, though I don't see how he can be a tool when all tools we know of are visible to everyone. Zack has said (on tumblr) that anyone can see the changes a tool or medium goes through, even when the spirit chooses to stay after getting to full health. Forge's armor would be handy for Max to get his hands on, since it means his magnet powers would no longer be useless against spirits.

Jesus christ Zack Morrison is so good at character design. I didn't mind the prospect of Forge permadying not because he's a lame character but simply because he'll inevitably be replaced by an equally enjoyable one. Alternatively it will only feature extremely suave, smooth teen romance. Possibly a first in the history of teen romance. Seriously though she has cupid powers. This giant ghost train smooching Max is probably not the last time it will be used for comic effect, although whether it's actually used to motivate some kind of romance is another question. Also, maybe I'm underestimating the blind, but how does she get by on her own if she's just been picking her way through the woods toward town? Is there a chance spectrals can tap some other senses to get around? Even if it's just her tool-spirit giving her a hand with some directions.
