Istari posted:I thought herbs were leaves and petals, and every other part of a plant is a spice ? And you're right for some reason I was under the impression that herbs were fresh and spices were dried. Now that I'm taking a moment to think about it, I'm realising this is flawed, but I'd never thought that much about it before.

It's Caraway. I thought it was Annatto (which is a spice), but my brother's just informed me that Annatto was their other brother's name.

I know someone with kids named Eli and Lilly (didn't even make the connection when naming them). She is expecting, and I certainly hope she decides to name this one Merck. Also, A&E's First 48 is great for names. The last episode I watched had a murder victim named Don'trell, his mother is named Kimmetta, and the two guys who murdered him were named Jermeal and Lateef. Also, in my youngest son's soccer league there are two boys (not related) named Camden and Trenton. I'm waiting for Secaucus and Manalapan to join the league soon. I categorize school photos for my county. The best names I've seen so far are Shadow League (that was his full name), EagleDancer, and Sir'prince.

That's making me think of the old Cherry Hill joke, though when we told it when we were little, the implication was that they were beating up on her, since we weren't old enough for the other interpretation that is apparently more well known. I'm hoping you live far away enough from New Jersey that neither of those parents were thinking of these actual cities when they named their kids

Turfahurf posted:I live in Vermont and know a Trenton and I never made the connection until just now, for what it's worth. I would say Vermont is far enough away that it wouldn't necessarily be the first thing you think of, but I guess it depends on things other than distance. My imagined "circle of don't-name-your-kid-Trenton-or-Camden" probably just comprises NJ*, East PA/Philly area, and maybe Delaware. And NYC, but nobody in New York is gonna name their kid a New Jersey city name. *Though I could see really rich, cloistered-away folks in like Bergen County doing it having never set foot near any of the areas in question. Rich people basically can name their kids whatever they want, no holds barred, because at least the kid can afford the therapy for it later.

I met a Jhonny yesterday. According to Google, it's a fairly common (or at least not-uncommon) Hispanic variant, but it's the first time I've heard it. Always ask people to spell their names for you if it's going in print. I wouldn't have, but I have seen "Jonny" as well as the standard spelling, so I asked just in case, and I'm glad I did. In other news, Neil Gaiman posted this on tumblr recently. (He didn't invent the name, just accidentally independently discovered it, but he probably is responsible for any recent popularity it's had.)

My cousin just announced she is having a girl and naming her Brynlee. I googled it an apparently it was made popular by those masters of the ridiculous: the Mormons. My boyfriend has a neice named Rhyleigh. It just looks they took the name Riley and tried to shove in as many letters as possible.

At least the two decidedly less common Roman ones are the middle name. Lucas on its own is pretty normal.
