Please don't forget that I am an extremely racist idiot who also has terrible opinions about the Culture series.

The 1981 case where the jury went with manslaughter instead of second degree murder, then the appeals court ruled to throw out the manslaughter for a few reasons, one of which being not admitting testimony regarding the murder victims sexuality. Can't find any info about the retrial.

Right. But it wasn't a "gay panic" defense, it was a self-defense claim. The defense claimed that the victim pulled a gun on the defendant and ordered him to perform fellatio on him. If that's true, that'd be rape, and you're allowed to use deadly force to prevent yourself from being raped. The jury didn't buy it, and a retrial was granted because he wasn't allowed to introduce evidence that the victim was, in fact, gay, and that was ruled to bear on his defense. That's not a gay panic defense at all: the defendant in no way claimed diminished capacity because he found gay people so creepy. He claimed that he shot the guy to prevent becoming a rape victim.

Of course, usually in a case of self-defense you don't go about trying to dispose of the body and concealing evidence. Which is why the outcome of the new trial was probably no different than that of the first.

Yeah. I thought the same thing about the former Pope, Benedict XVI or whatever. Dude was a child and was basically forced to join. Busting his balls over that misses all of the terrible poo poo he was doing in the present.

The problematic part is the implication that trans girls are only dressing in girls' clothes to trick (or 'trap') boys into having (gay) sex with them, and that they aren't actually girls as a result.

Same. I don't know if it's a regional thing or whatever but I've always known 'trap' as just referring to a really effeminate twinky dude. I've known at least two guys in my local scene who call themselves 'traps' on facebook and wherever - but they just like to look cute.

I seriously never put together that the term referred to literally trapping someone. I knew that it was offensive but never thought about where the word came from. I think I just assumed it was a shortened form of a longer word or something.

They are slightly nerdy and spend time online yeah? They either know what they're broadcasting there, OR they don't know the origin but saw it on tumblr/twitter etc. It's a word that's already being naively reclaimed by a younger generation that can't remember the internet 10 years ago. Whatever, I guess it's good to see it redefined. That's how language goes sometimes.

According to Wikipedia membership was over 8 million by 1940 and you could be investigated for refusing to let your kid join. Also they took over other youth organizations so you could be in the chess club one day and the next you're a Lil'Nazi. They got sick knives though.

Of all the things to complain about with Reagan appointees, this is the weakest.
