I live in Belgium and I'm going to the US next month and I'm wondering if anyone would be interested to set up a trade. I think I could pick up pretty much anything you can think of other than obscure ones that would require me to actually go to their brewery (like Westvleteren) cause I don't have a car. I get a free checked bag anyway so I'd just check the beers and then pick up one of those bevmo shipping boxes when I land and send it there. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for though, but I am going to Arizona so nothing I could buy there would be a start. I also like hoppy beer but all beer is ok in my book.

Is shipping beer really just as easy as going to Bevmo and buying the foam box/packaging and then taking it to a UPS store? Do they only sell them for 12 bottles or do they go smaller to say 6 bottles as well?

With a FedEx account, you never have to describe anything to anyone. Just print the label, slap it on the box, say "here you go, it's got a label already" and walk out.

FreelanceSocialist posted:Contents: "Yeast Samples" do not say this. first, it sounds fishy, and second, if the box should go missing and you need to file a claim, good luck giving them a value/receipt to get some sort of compensation. i would suggest saying it's some sort of local specialty like hot sauce, sparkling cider, olive oil, or maple syrup- that way you can go online and find a price since you cannot give them the receipt from the beer shop.

Last year's Apple Ale, Cherry Stout, Cran-bic (both years actually, the old stuff is really funky, oaky and sour), Enigma, ABT, Barley Wine, Smoked Rye, maybe a Chocolate Abbey or two, even a few bottles of Imperial Saison still. I also have a few cellared bottles of Surly Darkness (09 and maybe 10), and FFF Dark Lord (09-11). What would you want out of that to part with a black note? Also are they 12 oz or bombers?

My boss was travelling and asked if I wanted anything from Three Floyds. My response was "as much Permanent Funeral as you can get". He literally got me the maximum, which was two cases. Totally fine because this beer is amazing, but I seriously doubt I'll drink this much before faded hops, bro. Anyone interested? I'm willing to go $4$, here's a sampling of what I'd love to try: Heady Topper (I've brewed with Conan yeast, but have never had a chance to try this) Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Barrel Aged Blackout Surly Crooked Stave Also sours. I like sours. Anything I can't get in Michigan would be appreciated. ExtremistCow fucked around with this message at 00:29 on May 13, 2013 |

This might be a dumb question I missed an obvious answer to even after reading the OP, but how do you gauge the trade value of a beer? I'm not so much concerned about maximum value as I am getting something fun and interesting in return to try, but I've got no framework to make sure I'm not making a dumb trade and have never really tried this kind of thing before. I'm asking because I've got a Founder's membership to Funky Buddha, who are opening up a new brewery shortly. I'll have access to a whole bunch of special releases, and I know that they are fairly well-regarded and coveted. Is this something I should probably only trade for special releases or rarer things, or what?

Unfortunately I think the only way I can think of is to read trade forums pretty much constantly. At some point you'll get a better handle on it. People generally frown on threads like "what can I get for this beer" but if you word it like "here is a beer I want, what kind of ammo do I need to land it?" they'll bite. Some general rules of thumb: - If the beer you have is a distributed shelf beer and is not called out specifically in trades (Pliny, Zombie Dust, etc.) it is probably worth as much in trade value as its dollar value. - Trading quantity on your end for quality (on their end) is very difficult though it's easy for the one with quality to trade for quantity. Don't expect to be able to trade $200 worth of shelf beer for a vanilla Dark Lord, for example.

yeah, figuring out what your beer is really "worth" is a matter of experience. obviously, if someone wants to give you X, Y, and Z crazy beers for a bottle, that's their prerogative, but the trade value is mostly a combination of rarity (bottle count and distribution area) and demand. as crazyfish was pointing out, a Dark Lord variant might "only" cost $50, but someone who drove 600 miles and stood in line for the better part of the day is going to expect something pretty drat special in trade for one, and when people are practically throwing their cellars at him, well, he's got the chance to make a killing. so, yeah, i break beers down into tiers of availability more than dollar amount- year-round, seasonal, limited, and rare- and try to match those up when making a trade, but i don't worry too terribly much about it beyond that so long as i'm getting some beer i want. if you're really concerned about equal value, you could get an account on beeradvocate and compare the proportion of wants to haves for your beers and those you want.* that said, i want your beer. *we don't really care for BA too much around here and it is some ways responsible for the gotta catch 'em all mentality/rarity obsession that drives a lot of traders, but it is a good indicator of market value (edited because i didn't pay enough attention to your post before responding) funkybottoms fucked around with this message at 22:11 on May 22, 2013 |

In my opinion, if a beer is "easy" for me to get, it's worth what I paid for it regardless of how rare or desirable it is. If it's something I've had cellared for a few years, I'll try to work out a value with whomever I'm trading with, since it's not something I can go out and replace. In your case, since you paid a membership fee to be able to get those beers, you'll probably just have to go back and forth a bit with people. Your best bet if trading here is to just throw out some ideas of what you're looking for and negotiate until both parties are happy. Do you know yet how much these special releases are going to cost you?

ISO: 2012 Abyss from Deshcutes, up to 3 bottles if by some miracle it's possible, and one 2011 if I could find one. FT: 1 2010 Abyss, 1 Odell Shenanigans, 1 Nøgne Ø Imperial IPA, 2012 Sierra Nevada Hoptimum, 2013 Hop Henge, Grand Teton Double Vision. I love me some Abyss more than any other beer, but I haven't been able to get any 2012, and was one bottle short of what I wanted for 2011. I try to do a tasting with a couple of friends with a new bottle and the past two years bottles every year, but after lots of attempts to find it locally/regionally for sale or trade, I'm caving and reaching out online. I can definitely throw in some more local stuff in the trade(s) too as bonus if it matters to anyone.

A couple of friends and I managed to be down by Troegs for a graduation when they released Splinter Gold last week and ended up with an extra bottle of two to hang onto or trade. If someone was looking to try one, I probably could move one for some interesting regional yearly/rare beers from the Midwest/West Coast/Florida. We are in the northeast part of PA's distribution so we don't see most rarer west coast beers, BCBS and variants, CCB fun stuff, etc.
