Yeah for Chosen the Assassin is always the most dangerous and annoying to fight thanks to her high mobility, stealth and willingness to actually shoot/cut your dudes.

Hunter tends to gently caress around with his grappling hook too much and with the lowest health and fewest tricks he's the most easily neutered, though he will actually shoot your dudes if you're close.

Warlock is a total chump 90% of the time unless he pulls out Mind Control. Its about the only dangerous thing he can do.

Warlock is pretty inconsistent in terms of how dangerous he is. If he's pestering you with zombie summons he's just wasting a turn or so. If he does a mass summon and also uses his mind control (and no, I refuse to use mindshields just to deal with him) he can be pretty dangerous.

mind shields are super good regardless because they increase Will and that directly relates to how much a soldier can do before getting tired

I ran into a Warlock with passive regeneration on my first retaliation mission, once.

A lot of civilians died, and I only managed to finish the mission without any dead soldiers by giving up and letting the Warlock root around in a dazed dude's mind so he would finally gently caress off.

Be careful with The Hunter. Sure, most of the time he’s just loving around with his grappling hook and telegraphing his shot so hard you see it coming from a week away. But every now and again he remembers that he likes the skulls of XCOM operatives hanging in his fortress, and he. will. collect.

the hunter has the single most irritating loving power on the planet where he snaps off a shot that immediately puts someone into bleedout

thankfully most of the time he is too busy loving around and contemplating his own demise to remember he has it but when he does it goes straight from a fun game of tag to loving personal in about a quarter second.

I feel like regeneration and reactive plating or whatever it’s called are two of the most bullshit-difficult abilities to deal with early—especially for the hunter.

Also a chosen weak against explosions or melee getting the upgrade that makes them totally immune instead. Basically anything that ensures the fight takes way too long makes them much less fun. Fighting a powerful boss enemy is one thing but fighting a wall of HP+resists eventually gets boring even if it's attached to a boss that poses a nontrivial tactical challenge.

Modding question:

I'm currently using this rank mod: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1130154571 Basically, it changes the ranks to cap out at Sergeant Major, and then soldiers get commissioned officer ranks through the Long War Leader Pack. Problem is, the author disabled the officer bit until the WOTC leader pack came out, but hasn't put them back in again and it looks like he hasn't modded for a while.

Does anyone know where in the mod files I should poke around to re-enable the officer ranks? I assume they're commented out somewhere but I'm not sure where to even begin looking.

I started playing this again recently and finished the campaign, then started an ironman run.

I was doing really well for a while, beat the first encounter with the Assassin because she had a weakness to Reapers and explosives, so a claymore set off with a frag grenade took her out immediate, it was great. I thought fantastic, easy Assassin will make the ironman run go smoother.

Very soon thereafter, they got the buff thing that takes away all of their weaknesses, and then got put on a mission with sitrep of only allowing me three people, immediately set off two pods of berserkers, had the Assassin show up and stun two of my three people on the first turn, and just got demolished.

The next mission things were going well until I activated a pod of berserkers that included an armoured berserker that I didn't realize I had installed a mod for, and then the Assassin came in again, so I lost four troops fighting them all but managed to pull it off. I carried the corpse of one of the troops with one soldier, a VIP with the other, and managed to avoid a pod of archons and advent on the way out. I still can't believe I didn't wipe.

I just recently managed to kill the Assassin after a DISASTROUS assault on her base where one soldier got smacked unconscious immediately and my star grenadier taken down to 1hp in the first encounter. I didn't lose anybody in that mission, to my disbelief. (Did you know carrying an unconscious soldier into the stage transition doesn't count, and you have to set them on the ground to make it work? Did you also know that unconscious soldiers in the stage transition get sent back to the Avenger instead of reviving?)

It's been difficult. Haven't bothered with the alien rulers yet, that's gonna be HELL.

Last night a supply run popped. My guys are in the ruins of Beijing (somehow located in Japan), they take out the first pod, and kramer right into the second. Then the Assassin spawns and hides out right next to a car, she's weak to Reapers and explosions.

The use of remote start one shotting the Assassin was well worth summoning a group of lost.

Yeah, my very first ever encounter with the Hunter involved him taking a single pistol shot as his only offensive action. However, since he grappled upon to a high-ground, flanking position above the soldier in question.... and crit, and put them in bleed.... I drat near lost that guy even despite it being only one hit. Medivacced him with one turn left before he died.

Just make sure you have a deep pockets Grenadier with the Frost Bomb, and it's a hell of a lot easier. If you can do the Viper first it also then gives you the Serpent Suit, which gives you another freeze charge. Which one you get first is complete luck of the draw as far as I know, but I feel like I get the Viper more often.

They initially spawn in order at the advent facilities. Viper King, Bezerker Queen, then Archon King. You just have to remember which notification you got where and what order.

I want to warn you fellers
And tell you one by one
What makes a gallows rope to swing
A woman and a gun

All chosen are total chumps if you engage them on your terms and brutal if they find you when you’re engaged.

Warlock is the easiest because he sits in the back spawning zombies and doesnt move towards you. That means you almost always get to engage him solo if you love smartly so you can demolish him before he can do anything

Hunter is similar with how he broadcasts where he is so you can avoid him, but his tendency to seek high ground makes it a bit harder to engage him. Usually he dicks around with tracking shots so you can clear the map.

The assassin just charges right the gently caress at you with her insane mobility and starts nailing your guys and running. Her wave is devastating and it’s impossible to contain her because she attacks from stealth, and by moving towards you it’s usually while other pods are nearby, and then runs into cover on your flank. It also seems like she chooses non destructible cover more than anyone. I usually have at least two wounded after I run into her.

But then there are the times when my reaper spots her in stealth without good cover and my whole squad annihilates her and it’s SO satisfying.

Chosen are a very satisfying element done very well but they should up the difficulty on the hunter and warlock by increasing the odds hey move towards you instead of dicking around.

Weigh Assassin to spawn with Lightning Reflexes instead of Shadowstep, so she still rolls for Overwatch shots, and make the other two a little more aggressive, they'd all be of similar difficulty.

The Assassin only spawns with Shadowstep guaranteed if you do the story mission. I've done tons of campaigns where she doesn't have it and has other strengths instead.

Uh what? That’s a dark event where “the chosen no longer suffer from any weaknesses”—it’s a month or whatever like every other dark event unless you’ve enabled grim horizon.

It’s not the same as the abilities they gain through training. Those are permanent, but they can’t train themselves to remove all their weaknesses like that.

Like the minor/major avatar breakthroughs don’t wind back ticks on the avatar counter but the rest are just something you deal with for like 6 weeks. There was a bug with The Lost World at one point but they fixed that.

I’m working my way through WOTC on the second biggest difficulty, and I’m a few months in. Just had an alien retaliation mission with the Warlock that was described as “very difficult “. Initial stages were easy, just pods of a Muton and Berserker, and a Viper/Sectoid, and the Warlock just chilled and did phantasmal atmy.

Then I got to the save the civilians part, and no less than three pods of two mutons + berserker spawned, plus the berserker queen converged at once. Fortunately the berserkers focused on the civilians and the resistance contributed a lot to harassing the mutons, but I was still losing three civilians a turn and having to deal with the ruler. If it’s been any other chosen I think it would have been unwinable, but the warlock just spent his turns waiting on phantasmal army to cool down. I’d also just finished the proving ground and had dragon and poison ammo so the queen went down pretty quick. Ended with no losses but everyone hurt and some new psychological damage. Given that berserkers are probably the least scary terror enemy (losing the auto attack from XCOM 1 is a big nerf) I can’t wait to see what late game is going to throw at me.

Reminder that a mission's listed in-game difficulty indicates nothing except the *number* of enemies present.

I've definitely had an Oops All Mutons retaliation mission too, but not with the queen lmao :xcom:

Once you have the Shadow Chamber you can do some math to figure out if a chosen/ruler is going to appear since they take the place of a pod. With that said I almost always get it wrong :v: for example, I see a Very Hard mission which means four pods, and it shows 10 enemies, i always expect it to be 3 x 3 + the Chosen, but it's usually 3 x 2 + 2 x 2

I installed a mod pack that I thought was all quality of life and bug-fix stuff for my second playthrough but apparently one of the mods added in Berserkers from the first game, which I was not expecting, and activated a couple pods with them in it at once and got demolished. Stupid free attack once per turn if you're shooting at them is hard to deal with sometimes, especially because I was pretty sure they only charged the one who shot it in the first game, but in this mod they just attacked whoever was closest if they got attacked.

I have since uninstalled that mod because I'm a wuss.
